Regular nonstop flights between the east coast of Australia and London or New York could soon become a reality.In preparation, Australian airline Qantas has announced three test flights, with 40 people traveling directly from London or New York to Sydney, to see how the human body copes with 19 solid hours of air travel.Qantas previously announced its goal of operating direct flights between London, New York, and three Australian cities -- Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne -- by 2023.The test flights scheduled for October, November and December will move the airline closer to that target and enable Qantas, alongside medical experts, to test the health and wellbeing impacts on passengers and crew.Bjorn Fehrm, an aeronautical and economic analyst at Leeham News, explains to CNN the appeal of the ultra-long-haul flight, as opposed to a more typical two-part journey stopping in Dubai or Singapore.There's no layovers, no extra journeys through customs and no transfer stress, he points out. "You can plan it so you fly over night, and you could arrive to actually have a productive day the next day as well," says Fehrm. "It's going to be businesspeople that fly this way."If the 19-hour flight becomes a reality, it's likely to cost travelers more. "It's cheaper for the airline to do two separate flights," Fehrm says. "But some people are prepared to pay the extra price of that ticket."Before the trials begin later this year, three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, fresh off the production line, will be flown from Boeing's factory in Seattle to either London or New York.After the test flights -- two from New York, one from London -- the new planes will enter commercial service. Most of the people on board the test flights will be Qantas employees, so seats won't be available for purchase.Researchers from Sydney University's Charles Perkins Centre, Monash University and the Alertness Safety and Productivity Cooperative Research Centre -- a scientific program backed by the Australian government -- will examine the impact of the long flight on those on board.Passengers in the main cabin will wear monitoring devices, and experts from the Charles Perkins Centre will study how their "health, wellbeing and body clock" are impacted by a set of variables that include lighting, food and drink, movement, sleep patterns and inflight entertainment.Monash University scientists will focus on the flight crew, recording their melatonin levels before, during and after the flights, as well as studying brain wave data from electroencephalogram devices worn by the pilots.This information will then be shared with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority "to help inform regulatory requirements associated with ultra-long haul flights," Qantas said in a 2765

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — A former student who had a child with his teacher in 2015 filed suit Monday against Akron and Tallmadge school officials for failing to stop the abuse.The suit also listed former teacher Laura Lynn Cross as a defendant.The suit states that administrators failed to “prevent adult Laura Lynn Cross from sexually abusing, assaulting, and raping the Plaintiff, a student and a minor.”Cross served prison time at the Ohio State Reformatory for Women in Marysville after having been convicted of three counts of sexual battery. She has since been released from prison.Cross resigned from her teaching position in 2015 following allegations of sexual abuse of a student. STILLWATER, Okla. -- A puppy with upward facing paws has now gone through six months of intensive rehabilitation therapy in Oklahoma.Milo went from having to Army-crawl to running and playing.Before, or shortly after Milo's birth, his elbow joints dislocated. It affected his two front paws, turning them almost 180 degrees. Unable to walk or stand, Dr. Erik Clary performed corrective surgery at just seven weeks old back in January. His owners, who run Oliver and Friends Farm Rescue and Sanctuary near Tulsa, said it was difficult watching him in casts, not able to do anything. Jennie Hayes said they had to watch him constantly because he was immobile. Hayes said he never lost his spirit. "The first couple of days there was a lot of tears on my part and on Milo’s part," Hayes said. "Although, I can say Milo handled it a lot better than I did. He never lost his bark. He’s always had a lot to say, that certainly didn’t change.” Hayes said immediately after the casts came off, the challenge was holding him back for his own safety.As part of his rehabilitation, he went for short walks, swam and had muscle stretching exercises. After months of strengthening, Milo can now walk and play like other dogs. Dr. Clary said they had concerns that the condition would affect his growth, but they do not expect it to be an issue later down the road. However, he may be more at risk of getting arthritis, but Dr. Clary said Milo will now have a normal life. 1473

They have over 100,000 rocks from space.Charis Krysher, a Lunar Curation Processor for NASA, says moon rocks and space dust are the most important thing brought back to Earth.“One of the first things that we learned from the Apollo collection was how old the moon the Earth was,” Krysher says.Rocks on Earth aren’t pristine like they are on the Moon. Moon rocks don’t age, because there is no atmosphere in space to break down the rocks. The rocks found on the moon can potentially be billions of years old. “More recently we've actually learned in the past, less than a decade, that the Moon's rocks actually contain way more water than was originally realized,” the processor explains. Just like famous diamonds and jewels, there are well known space rocks, too. Like the one found by Apollo 15. “They named it the Genesis Rock, because it’s a part of the primordial crust of the moon,” she says.When studying these samples, scientists take all the precautions, from wearing bunny suits, temperature-controlled rooms and even triple bagging each rock for storing."We try really hard to preserve the rocks so that the science that we learn from the rocks can be trusted," Krysher says.It’s not every day we go to the Moon, so these scientists take time to study the rocks and do it sparingly. They are still breaking rocks over 40 years old. However, come five years from now, they’ll get another chance for more rocks when U.S. astronauts head to the moon in 2024. 1796
