Lorenzo Liberti is a teenage flag maker."The day that I stop working is a day that a hero could be forgotten," says the 15-year-old from Lakewood Ranch.Using pinewood and prodigious talent, Lorenzo works day and night in his garage hand-carving Heroic Flags, gorgeous, time-consuming tributes to American heroes he sells and donates to help people in need."As long as you're living, you're here for a purpose," he says.Lorenzo has only been creating the flags for the past eight months or so. He's made about 50 so far and raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs, homeless veterans, and Bradenton's Turning Points nonprofit."This is bigger than me," he says.The pandemic has inspired Lorenzo's newest mission: honoring medical workers across the country.He's raising money to try and get one of his flags in a hospital in every state: 50 flags, all across America. LONG BEACH (CNS) - A woman was killed early Monday afternoon by a man who used a scooter to assault her on a street in Long Beach.Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6400 block of North Obispo Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy.``The victim is believed to be a female adult who was walking eastbound towards Obispo and 64th (Street)'' when a man ran up and began assaulting her, Dandoy said.A bystander tried to help, at which time the suspect grabbed a scooter and used it to continue attacking the woman, according to Dandoy.The suspect was last seen running west from the location on foot. Fire department personnel responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene, Dandoy said. Her name and age were not immediately available.Homicide detectives were investigating the fatal assault. 910

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fresh snow coated the slopes of the Sierra Nevada on Thursday as a late-spring storm with winter-like potency moved through California, forcing rescues and adding to snowpack and rainfall totals that are already well above normal.Authorities rescued four hikers caught in the weather on the far north's Redwood Coast and two people trapped on a tiny island in the suddenly fast-flowing Los Angeles River.Mammoth Mountain, a popular ski area in the Sierra, reported a foot (30 centimeters) of new snow on its peak, boosting the season total at the summit to nearly 58 feet (18 meters). The resort already announced it had enough snow to allow skiing and boarding through the Fourth of July. Mammoth expects up to two feet of snow by Friday morning. Jason Elrick eagerly followed the storm's progress from his desk at a staffing office in Chino, east of Los Angeles. As the snow piled up at Mammoth, he vowed to make the five-hour drive to the resort late Thursday and hit the slopes in the morning."I have a bit of flexibility at work so I can say, 'Boss, it's snowing.
