SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit has now been filed surrounding the platform collapse that injured 21 children and some adults last November at Vault PK parkour gym inside a Barrio Logan warehouse.Two mothers and six children are represented in the complaint, filed against Vault PK and San Diego's Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS), among other defendants.MTS owned the warehouse and subleased the space to a business that subleased again to Vault PK. A few days after the collapse, MTS was hit with a dozen building code violations.Some of the families are suing MTS and Vault PK for negligence, among other complaints.MTS told 10News it won't comment on pending litigation.  713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political attack ad accuses mayoral candidate Barbara Bry of repeatedly falling asleep at public meetings. The ad is from a committee that supports State Assemblyman Todd Gloria. It says San Diego needs a mayor on alert given the coronavirus outbreak, the threat of wildfires, and the homeless crisis. It then cuts to shots of Bry appearing to doze off at two City Council Committee meetings within the last year. The committee, called Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020, is backed by more than a dozen organizations, including the Municipal Employees Association and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Gil Cabrera, its principal, is responsible for the ad."If it was a random falling asleep during a 10-hour council meeting, I'm not going to get into that, there's an amusement factor to it but I'm not going to get into it. It's the pattern of it," Cabrera said.Cabrera said Bry regularly dozes off at public meetings, but also said employees who see it fear retaliation for speaking out. Still, the ad raises questions about accuracy. It shows an image of Bry appearing to sleep at a committee meeting on the city's Get it Done app, while the narrator says she fell asleep during a meeting on police reform. "If this ad is talking about a meeting on police reform but showing a picture of Barbara Bry in a very different hearing, one, that plays a bit fast and loose with the truth and two, it makes problems with the ad the story rather than the Barbara Bry falling asleep on the job, which is what the backers of this ad wanted you to think about," said Thad Kousser, political scientists at UC San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A number of San Diegans who were abroad in Peru are now stranded there amid the coronavirus outbreak.On March 15, as the disease spread, the Peruvian government declared a 15-day national quarantine, eliminating travel out of the country. The U.S. government has taken the first 600 American tourists out of Peru, but the San Diegans who are still there say they still don't have concrete information on when it will be their turn. "It's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster but right now it's seeming that there's light at the end of the tunnel knowing that the State Department is working on repatriation flights, so I'm feeling hopeful right now," said Dr. Rupa Prasad, an anesthesiology resident at U.C. San Diego health.Prasad has been in Peru since March 8 for a capacity building medical mission with Dr. Reema Sanghvi, a U.C. San Diego anesthesiologist on the faculty. Sanghvi says the Peruvian citizens have treated them with a lot of respect and hospitality, but they want to get home to help their colleagues at a critical time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A popular summer reading program in City Heights had to adapt to overcome challenges from the Coronavirus.In previous years, the United Way of San Diego County's Readers in the Heights program offered kids a chance to explore books through active reading and play at community centers throughout the area. It aims to help kids avoid the summer "brain drain" of falling behind while not in class.In 2020, the Coronavirus Pandemic threatened to cancel the program, since gatherings were prohibited."We heard across the board that the transition from in-person to online schools was leading to a bit of online fatigue," says Ian Gordon, the United Way of San Diego County Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer.Rather than more Zoom-based readings or online classes, the United Way of San Diego County decided to base the program out of each family's home.They gave out 1500 books and more than 400 activity kits to keep the kids engaged over the summer. They also encouraged parents and siblings to read with the kids."It was different in many ways," says Gordon. "But it absolutely was successful."According to the United Way of San Diego County, 93% of the families in the program continued reading throughout the summer. At the end, 85% of the kids said they enjoyed reading, compared with 55% at the beginning of the summer.Parents also said they felt more confident and comfortable reading with their children."It was really nice," says Emily Lira. Her son Brian and daughter Emily took part in the program."It gave me more time to set apart from my schedule to read a book with the kids," she says.The United Way of San Diego County also gave the families face masks and hand sanitizer to help with safety during the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine killed in a motorcycle crash on I-15 Friday has been identified as 21-year-old Logan Parkhurst.The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Miramar Way just after 6:30 a.m.According to the California Highway Patrol, Parkhurst hit the back of a Toyota while attempting to exit onto Miramar Way, causing him to be ejected.
