SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall.The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several protesters were arrested in downtown San Diego Friday night as demonstrators gathered following a grand jury announcement in the Breonna Taylor case.San Diego Police tweeted just before 11 p.m. that three protesters were arrested at B Street and Columbia Street.One of the demonstrators was arrested for robbery of a cell phone while two others were arrested for interfering with an arrest. Police said a cell phone was stolen from a victim while they were recording the protesters.Police said earlier that roughly 40 to 50 protesters gathered in the downtown area.“We are again with the group to ensure they remain safe and the community remains safe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. Now he says they are drawing thousands of people to their online forums.“We’re producing more programming than we have ever before and reaching more people than we ever have before,” said Lopez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released video Thursday of a random assault outside a North Park 7-Eleven.The assault happened February 15 about 9 p.m. at the store on 3019 Meade Ave., at 30th St., police said.The woman was standing outside the store in front of the Redbox video rental machine when the man walked up behind her.Surveillance video shows the man push the woman. She fell to the ground and was injured. There's no word on her condition.The attack appears to be random.Anyone with information about the man is asked to call San Diego Police. 567

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s tourism industry is preparing for a hit with restrictions and travel advisories in place ahead of the holidays.Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in March, research shows the San Diego region has lost .6 billion in tourist money.Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California, Oregon, and Washington were issuing a travel advisory, asking people to self-quarantine for 14 days if they’ve traveled out of the state or out of the country.The announcement coincides with the CDC urging Americans to stay home and not travel over the holidays.Local hotel owner Bob Rausch said he believes this won’t just hurt his business, but San Diego’s tourism in general. Rausch said tourism is an important part of the city’s economy.“Even if you don’t work directly in the industry, you likely are getting the benefits of tourism,” said Rausch. “I don’t see any good news for the next six months because it’s not our peak season, there are no corporate travelers coming because of all the restrictions. And there aren’t any groups allowed in the state. And leisure travelers are being told to stay home and that was our only business.”It's grim news for business owners who are trying to keep their doors open, and economists are predicting it will take five years for San Diego’s tourism to recover. 1339
