After wastewater from a dorm came back positive, school officials tested the students living there and identified two asymptomatic students.“The trick is by identifying the asymptomatic cases early, we are, if not eliminating, we are reducing exponential spread of the virus,” said Pepper.Wastewater testing is gaining some steam in the scientific community outside of Arizona.“We as individuals, humans, shed these virus in fecal material,” said Kellog Schwab, the director of the Water Institute at Johns Hopkins University.He has been studying wastewater virology for 30 years. He says what they’re doing in Arizona is complicated.“It is not straight forward. There are a lot of interfering substances as you can imagine in a waste stream that you have to then purify the virus from. It’s not just you grab a sample from a particular part of the environment and then instantly be able to detect the virus. You need to process that sample, you need to maintain the integrity of your target of interest, and then you have to have the appropriate detection,” said Schwab.But he and Dr. Pepper agree that this type of testing could be scaled up and implemented at universities and other populated facilities where COVID-19 could potentially spread.“Wastewater epidemiology has the potential to be scalable,” said Schwab.“Perhaps targeting high-risk areas like nursing homes. We’re helping people in Yuma, Arizona, testing our farm workers when they come here in the fall, so there’s a great deal of potential,” said Pepper.“Many research laboratories have the capacity to do this,” said Schwab.That potential to expand this type of testing, and keep people safe, keeps Pepper going.“We are keeping the university open, which is really important. (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to find a new job - or get a better one - will soon have a new resource to help them get there. Goodwill Industries San Diego is finishing a more than 4,000 square-foot job training center in San Ysidro, which it plans to open Sept. 13. The 0,000 facility is replacing the organization's rack store at 630 Front St. in San Ysidro, which moved to a new location. (KGTV) - The man accused of carrying out dozens of rapes and at least 12 murders across California in the 1970s and '80s did not enter a plea at his arraignment Friday.Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer cases.He was handcuffed in a wheelchair during his court appearance, and listened to the judge with his eyes barely open.In a frail voice, DeAngelo responded, "I have a lawyer." An attorney from the public defender's office was with him in court.He was denied bail.DeAngelo, a former California police officer, is charged in Sacramento County with two counts of murder in the 1978 killings of Brian Maggiore and his wife, Katie, and with additional murder charges in Ventura County. (KGTV) -- The Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday the agency has given the go-ahead for Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine to be administered, CNN reported.The CDC says the vaccine may be given to those 16 and older.The approval means shots can now be given in the United States, CNN reports. Friday, the FDA granted emergency use authorization for the vaccine.Following the announcement, the first trucks carrying vaccines pulled out of a Michigan manufacturing plant Sunday morning.The Associated Press reported that the initial doses of the vaccine will likely be limited to healthcare workers and those in nursing homes.More than 325,000 doses of the vaccine were making their way to California Sunday as cases continue to spike.So far, the Golden State has seen more than 1,521,000 cases and nearly 21,000 deaths.According to San Diego County officials, the first 28,000 doses of the vaccine will be distributed to Rady Children’s Hospital, UCSD, and the county. 1017
