SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police officers are getting a new chance to buy a home in the city that they serve. This week, the city launched a public-private partnership that allows eligible officers to get up to a ,000 interest free loan that can go toward a down payment for a home. "We're not here to help people buy million dollar homes or anything like that," said Councilman Chris Cate. "We want folks to live in the communities that they are patrolling."RELATED:County program makes electric vehicles more affordableCity may weigh 'vacancy tax' targeting empty homesCalls to change San Diego’s zoning regulationsThe goal is improve police recruitment and retention, an issue the city has been trying to tackle for years. Already, the City Council has approved recruitment bonuses, and a series of salary raises for officers. An entry-level officer now makes about ,000 per year. "Several of our officers have had to move outside of the county because the price of homes keeps going up and up and up," said Jack Schaeffer, who heads the San Diego Police Officers Association. Eligible officers would need to contribute 3.5 percent of the purchase price in cash. They would also need to pay back the interest-free loan within five years. 1257

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed. In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city. The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups. The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts. The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. "This has truly been a citywide push to beautify our neighborhoods and we encourage San Diegans to keep using the ‘Get It Done’ app to report issues that we need to address in their community." 1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Supervisors and the charity organization responsible for running a shelter for asylum seekers responded Wednesday to the county’s lawsuit against the heads of government agencies. The County of San Diego filed the lawsuit Wednesday against Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost. The suit claims the end of the “Safe Release” program, which provided migrants with aid needed to leave San Diego County, was unlawful. The County of San Diego wants to reinstate the policy, which ended last fall, and be reimbursed for the cost of supporting asylum seekers in the following months. RELATED: County of San Diego sues chiefs of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, ICE and CBP over asylum seekers“The federal government’s negligent approach to those seeking asylum is taking a huge toll on San Diego County taxpayers. The county has already spent over .3 million to address health and safety issues at the asylum shelter. That figure is ballooning by the day,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “We are asking the court to require the feds to reinstate the Safe Release program and not leave local governments, non-profits and taxpayers holding the bag. This lawsuit isn’t about broad immigration issues or border security.” County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher also addressed the issue. “Donald Trump’s inhumane immigration policies are wrong. His failure does not remove our obligation to do the right thing to help families legally seeking asylum in the United States. I am proud our County is stepping-up to take on Trump. I hope other jurisdictions will join us in this lawsuit,” Fletcher said in a statement. RELATED: County's projected costs of San Diego shelter for asylum-seekers top .3 millionThe San Diego Rapid Response Network commended the County Supervisors for “holding the federal administration accountable for its anti-immigrant policies and tactics.” SDRRN has helped more than 11,000 migrants in the last five months, the agency said. “Together, we can ensure that no one stands alone in our community,” said SDRNN officials. The charity requested donations for its services at GoFundMe.com/MigrantReliefSD. By Wednesday night, it had received almost 3,000 of its 0,000 goal. 2515

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police arrested nine people suspected of driving under the influence Saturday night. According to the department, the checkpoint was held on the 1400 block of G Street between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. A total of 2,403 vehicles went through the checkpoint, police say. More than 400 vehicles were screened, 13 drivers evaluated and nine people arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. San Diego Police said in a news release that they plan to conduct another DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Halloween.
