For the second time in a week, a potential school shooting was thwarted by a tipster who gave authorities a heads up -- this time in the town of Middlebury, Vermont.Authorities launched an investigation last week after a student told the principal at Middlebury Union Middle that she or he overheard two teens planning to attack another student, police said.Though interviews with multiple students, investigators learned that a 14-year-old planned to go to the school Tuesday at noon "and shoot a specific student, one in which he had problems with, and anyone else."The second student involved allegedly said he could obtain a weapon from a relative."They provided us this information in pretty graphic detail," Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley told CNN affiliate WPTZ. "As to what the plans were, very specific: date and time, target, where this was going to happen... very specific. As opposed to the normal kind of idle chatter where there's nothing specific at all."Working with social workers, counselors and the State's Attorney Office, police had one student taken to Porter Medical Center for psychiatric counseling and treatment. The firearms from the other student's relatives were seized pending a court hearing, though police say the relative had no knowledge of the students' plans. All of the relatives' firearms were secured in safes, police said. The middle school "will deal with both students per their internal policies," as the investigation continues, police said.School Superintendent Peter Burrows said he was thankful for the student who decided to speak up."Students talking to each other and reaching out to us and then allowing us to work with police and take care of it is huge," Burrows told CNN affiliate WCAX.Middlebury, a town of around 8,500 people, is located about 35 miles south of Burlington.Last week, police in Richmond, Indiana, killed a teen they said was bent on committing violence at a middle school after receiving notice of the teen's plan. Lauding the tipster, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Bowling said, "Someone knew something, and they said something." 2117

Health authorities are closely watching an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a new virus that originated in China. Governments are stepping up surveillance of airline passengers from central China and taking other steps to try to control the outbreak. Here’s what you should know about the illness:WHAT IS THE NEW VIRUS?Scientists have identified it as a new coronavirus. The name comes from the Latin word for crowns or halos, which coronaviruses resemble under a microscope. The coronavirus family has many types that affect people. Some cause the common cold while others originating in bats, camels and other animals have evolved into more severe illnesses such as SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — or MERS — Middle East respiratory syndrome.WHERE DID IT COME FROM?The first cases appeared last month in Wuhan, a city in central China’s Hubei province. Many of the first people infected had visited or worked at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, which has since been closed for an investigation. Chinese health officials say they believe the illness first spread from animals to people. They now say it can spread between people.HOW WIDESPREAD IS IT?China has identified 440 cases and nine deaths, most of the illnesses and all of the deaths in Hubei province. Cases have also been confirmed in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and Taiwan. The outbreak coincides with China’s busiest travel season as people visit their families or go abroad for the Lunar New Year holiday. That travel rush is expected to spread the disease more widely.WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?Common symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough and fever. Shortness of breath, chills and body aches are associated with more dangerous kinds of coronavirus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In serious cases, the virus can cause pneumonia.HOW IS IT TREATED?There is a test to identify the virus, but no vaccine to prevent an infection. Patients with the virus have been isolated in hospitals or homes to prevent spreading it. The symptoms are treated with pain and fever medication, and people are advised to drink plenty of liquids and rest while they recover.HOW IS IT SPREADING?Many coronaviruses can spread through coughing or sneezing, or by touching an infected person. Scientists believe the new virus can spread from person to person in close contact through the respiratory tract. COULD IT BE AS BAD AS SARS?So far, the virus appears less dangerous and infectious than SARS, which also started in China in 2002-03 and killed about 800 people. However, viruses can mutate into more dangerous and contagious forms, and it’s too early to say what will happen with this one.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives 2792

Fourteen teens and young adults have been hospitalized in Wisconsin and Illinois for breathing problems potentially linked to vaping, health officials in both states announced Friday. In Wisconsin, severe lung disease has sent 11 people to the hospital, according to the state's Department of Health Services. That's three more than the eight cases the state reported in late July. And in Illinois, three young people have been hospitalized for severe breathing problems after vaping, the state Department of Public Health announced Friday. Hurricane Dorian is now a category 2 story with top winds at 105 MPH, as of the 11 p.m. advisory from he National Hurricane Center. It is slightly below major hurricane classification, which begins at 111 MPH. The pressure has dropped to 977MB, a drop of 13 MB from from the 5 p.m. advisory.Dorian is expected to become a category 3 hurricane on Friday. The National Hurricane Center's official forecast has Dorian making landfall late Monday on the Florida east coast as a major hurricane. National Hurricane Center forecaster Eric Blake said that Dorian is bound to become a category 4. "Unfortunately, I don't see any large-scale factors that would prevent Dorian from becoming an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane during the next few days," Blake said. Blake noted that there is still a large margin of error on where Dorian comes on shore. Even as Dorian approaches Florida, the entire east coast of the state is still in the crosshairs of the hurricane.Adding insult to injury is the projected forward speed of the storm. The onslaught of tropical storm winds is slated to arrive Sunday night on the Florida east coast, but landfall of the hurricane isn't expected until Monday evening. It is possible parts of Florida could see up to two full days of tropical storm conditions from Dorian. 1316
