SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its weeklong Spooky Spokes Week, the San Diego County Bike Coalition will host a series of Halloween-themed events Thursday throughout the city.From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 to 5:30 p.m., bike enthusiasts can arrive at the Pacific Beach Library at 4275 Cass St. location for the "Halloween Spoketacular" event featuring bike maps, spooky backgrounds for photos and children's trick-or-treat bags.The weeklong Spooky Spokes event encourages cyclists to ride all week long and to learn about bike safety, biking as a solution to climate change and bike-friendly routes in the community during multiple special events.According to the San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego County has seen a 42% increase in bike trips during the pandemic. With more riders on the road and with daylight hours shortening, the bike coalition said it recognizes the importance of bike safety education in the community."Even though riders still need to take safety precautions, including physical distancing, everyone can still get out and ride in the community," a coalition statement said.During Spooky Spokes Week, running through Sunday, San Diego bike riders will get the opportunity to win prizes by riding and participating in events like the Spooky Spokes Trivia night and the costume contest.At 4 p.m., the San Diego County Bike Coalition is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety to invite all bike commuters in costume to receive free front bike lights at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. All riders on bikes can head to the San Diego Central Library where coalition staff will encourage safe, nighttime commuting with free bike light installation, tips and important safety information about riding in the dark.The annual bike light giveaway aims to increase the visibility of riders on city streets. This year, LightMeUp Safety Lights will be available for purchase, as will wheel lights. The first 10 people in costume to arrive will get one free wheel light. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local realtor who molested two underage girls apologized to his victims during a court hearing Friday, while those speaking on behalf of the victims said they could take solace in the fact that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.Donald Edward Hickey, 62, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography for material investigators found on three separate devices.Hickey was initially set to be sentenced to a 25-years-to-life term on Friday, but the hearing was postponed until Sept. 6 so that an interview can be conducted for his probation report, which could affect his future in-custody housing considerations.Prosecutors did not disclose how Hickey knew the victims, but according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt, the molestations occurred sometime between 2009 and 2012 in San Diego County. Hickey was arrested last year following a cyber tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.The former Clairemont resident, who worked as a real estate agent out of La Jolla, was found to have ``thousands'' of videos and images of child pornography in his possession, some of which depicted Hickey abusing children.``This defendant not only preyed on these children, but he also memorialized what he did so that he could retain a copy of the real-time abuse of those children,'' Marquardt said.Hickey's attorney, Danielle Iredale, said Hickey was molested by a local man in his neighborhood when Hickey was between the ages of 10 and 12.Hickey told those in attendance, ``I'm sorry for everything that's happened. I take responsibility for it and I hope they do heal from it.'' Despite the postponed sentencing, victims were allowed to speak Friday in case they could not attend Hickey's sentencing next month.One of the girls, identified in court only as Jane Doe 2, said she was working to put the experience behind her, and was working on forgiving Hickey, though ``I am conflicted,'' she said. ``Because I don't know how you came to be the way you are and feel sympathy for your sickness. She said she was nervous about speaking at the hearing, but would regret it if she didn't.``No teenager should be in a situation where they sit down and think about what they're going to say to a pedophile,'' Jane Doe 2 said. ``No parent should have to decide whether or not to tell their child that they have been assaulted. I hate that you put my family in that position.''Jane Doe 1 did not attend the hearing. Her older sister told Hickey that she wanted to attend, but ``was absolutely terrified to see your face.'' The mother of Jane Doe 1 said she ``screamed and cried in absolute agony and devastation'' when she discovered what had happened to her daughter, who she said still suffers from nightmares and trauma, according to her mother.``To find out the ugliness and deception of what you had been doing with my child is almost more than I can bear,'' she said.Hickey will remain in custody without bail until his sentencing hearing. 3096

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metropolitan Transit System trolley in San Ysidro, police said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 11:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Beyer Boulevard and Smythe Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said. The intersection is just northeast of the Beyer Boulevard Trolley Station.The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Stirk said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed when his car was struck by a trolley after he drove past a trolley crossing gate in the Valencia Park area, police said Tuesday.The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Merlin Drive and Imperial Avenue, east of Valencia Parkway, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 22-year-old man was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on 60th Street toward Imperial Avenue when he drove past trolley crossing arms and was struck by an eastbound trolley, Buttle said. The impact pushed the vehicle about 100 feet down the tracks.The victim, the only occupant of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said.
