The owner of a company that builds 3D-printed guns said he has begun selling blueprints of the weapons to elude a court order on Monday that banned him from giving the plans away for free.Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, said that he interpreted Monday's federal court order to mean that he could not put gun blueprints online to be downloaded for free. Instead, he said, he is now selling the blueprints to customers, letting them name their own price and then emailing or shipping it to them."Anyone who wants these files is going to get them. The man accused of killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more at a Walmart in Texas is expected to be reindicted Thursday as he faces another murder charge in the mass shooting that targeted Mexicans, prosecutors said.Patrick Crusius of Allen, Texas, is currently being held without bond on one count of capital murder of multiple people under Texas state law. The 21-year-old has also been charged with several federal hate crimes related to the shooting, according to a 90-count indictment unsealed in February.District Attorney Jaime Esparza said the latest murder charge will account for 36-year-old Guillermo “Memo” Garcia, who died nine months after the Aug. 3 massacre in the Texas border of El Paso that’s considered one of the deadliest attacks on Latinos in recent U.S. history. Esparza said Crusius will also face more counts in relation to the dozens of people injured in the shooting. The new charges will be added to the indictment prior to the grand jury’s term ending on June 30, Esparza said.“We’re reindicting the defendant to include the additional death and to include all of those injured in the Walmart shooting in order to give the next DA all of their options,” Esparza added. “We just want to cover all our bases.”The upcoming reindictment comes more than 10 months after the mass shooting in the majority Latino and Hispanic city federal prosecutors say was sparked by militant racism. They have said Crusius carried out the attack to scare Latinos into leaving the U.S., a plot they allege he outlined in a racist screed published online before the attack.More than 20 people survived the shooting and suffered from injuries. Some underwent surgery, and one remains in the hospital. Hundreds more have suffered psychological trauma either because they were present or because a loved one was wounded, according to local officials.Esparza, who’s set to retire after 28 years in office, said he hopes that the added charges will help provide continuity in the case and eventually lead to justice should the DA succeeding him decide to pursue the state case against Crusius.Voters will pick a new DA in a runoff election on July 14th. It’s one of several factors that will help answer some legal and financial questions, including the trial’s start date and location.The Department of Justice will prosecute on a parallel track with Texas officials. The pandemic has not deterred people from spending money during the holidays this year.According to Mastercard SpendingPluse, holiday retail sales were about 3% higher in 2020 than they were a year ago.“American consumers turned the holiday season on its head, redefining ‘home for the holidays’ in a uniquely 2020 way. They shopped from home for the home, leading to record e-commerce growth,” said Steve Sadove, senior advisor for Mastercard and former CEO and Chairman of Saks Incorporated said in a press release. “And, consumers shopped earlier than ever before. Across our expanded 75-day holiday shopping season, sales were up 3.0%, a testament to the holiday season and strength of retailers and consumers alike.”Mastercard said that between Oct. 11 and Dec. 24, online spending was up 49%, with sales on furniture and home improvement items also seeing an increase.Online furniture sales grew 31% compared to last year, and home improvement items were up 79%, Mastercard said.Sales for department stores and clothing brands were down this year, with apparel declining 19% and overall sales at department stores fell 10%. 1137

Now, as the winter months approach, psychologists are concerned about the impact seasonal affective disorder, or seasonal depression, might have."And we think that it is because of reduced light and at a more reliable time late in the year, usually around spring, summer, those symptoms resolve. And so, we come into 2020 and it's a completely different landscape right now, and honestly, we don't know what to expect yet," says Dr. Craig Sawchuck, a clinical psychologist with the Mayo Clinic.Dr. Sawchuck says there is some speculation that seasonal depression rates could increase this year."Kind of think about it like people are operating at a deficit right now. With the number of stressors that have been going on in 2020, just the erosion effect has been wearing folks down, so maybe folks that have struggled with winter blues in the past, so maybe not full-blown seasonal depression but winter blues, you layer in the erosion effect with the stress and maybe that's going to put them more in the range of depression," says Dr. Sawchuck.Social isolation from the pandemic and any unhealthy habits that might normally form in the winter months could exacerbate seasonal depression."Energy goes down, we want to sleep more, there's that urge for carbohydrate cravings, increased weight gain and socially pulling back or withdrawing," says Dr. Sawchuck.Experts say if you suffer from winter blues or seasonal depression, there are things you can do to try and boost your mood."Seasonal depression and treatment during this time is a little tricky. Some of the things we would recommend are hindered by COVID-19, especially with the escalating rates. So, things like getting outside might be risky for some people with the transmission of COVID -19, so we’re thinking about some of the basic things to just take care of yourself. What are your coping skills? What are things that do get you involved and happy and excited?" says Dr. Apryl Alexander, a psychologist and professor at the University of Denver.Dr. Alexander says a recent study from the American Psychological Association reports that eight in 10 Americans are feeling stressed because of COVID-19. Even though we're in a pandemic, Dr. Alexander says it's still important to socialize, especially if you are prone to seasonal depression."So, how can you maintain those social connections during this time, whether its dance parties we’ve had in our department during COVID-19 to engaging with your family members on Zoom or other forms of social media," says Dr. Alexander.Dr. Alexander also says many psychologists and therapists are offering virtual sessions, so it's important to take advantage of tele-mental health visits. And with the holiday season approaching, whether you're able to be with family or not, make sure you also take the time to check in on loved ones who may not be feeling themselves this winter season. 3027
