LAS VEGAS — Six months ago, 58 innocent people lost their lives in a shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. Hundreds of people gathered Sunday, April 1 to remember the 58 people who were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in modern history.The gathering took place outside of the venue where the deadly shooting took place on Oct. 1, 2017.Organizers handed out 58 white glow sticks.Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak presented 58 red roses to the organizers.After a reading of the names of the dead and a moment of silence, the attendees took a solemn walk around the perimeter of the festival grounds, which are inaccessible.  647

LARGO, Florida — In the span of about 10 minutes, jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted cop killer Marco Parilla handed down two sentences. Only one was correct. And, it isn't what family members of fallen Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek were hoping for.The jury had supposedly unanimously decided death was the appropriate penalty, but then the judge noticed some numbers scribbled out on the forms and asked the jury to go back and confirm all 12 jurors agreed on death.  Upon their return to the courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of life in prison, as only 10 jurors voted for the death penalty and two for life in prison.The judge, explaining to Kondek's family and friends that under a new Florida law, the decision to sentence someone to death must be unanimous. The jurors made a paperwork error filling out their verdict that led to the confusion.Kondek's widow Theresa couldn't believe an error was made."Relief, we felt like justice was served for Charlie. We waited three years for this and then to have it taken away that was a little tough," Kondek said. "It’s closure for us. Obviously, we wanted the death penalty."Kondek said this chapter of her life is over and all she wants to do is move forward and live a life that will honor her fallen husband. "No one wins. Either way, my husband will never come home," Kondek said.  Parilla was convicted of murdering Officer Charles Kondek of the Tarpon Springs Police Department back in 2014.On Thursday, Parilla told the family he was ashamed of what he did and tried to apologize to the fallen officer's family.After learning Parilla would not face the death penalty, family members told him in their victim impact statements that they hoped he died in prison sooner rather than later."You are an animal and I hope you die the worst death possible, a shiv across the neck or something," Charles Kondek, the fallen officer's father told Parilla. 2038

(KGTV) - A La Mesa dessert shop is beating the odds, flourishing through the pandemic.Toran Grays opened Extraordinary Banana Pudding March 14th, the day after the President declared a national emergency due to the coronavirus.Grays was set up for success from the get go, with prepackaged desserts available for take out, and partnering with Door Dash so he could be COVID compliant."I didn’t know COVID was going to hit so fast, but I did have belief in my product, so I said you know what I’m going to give it a try, you gotta try something at some point in your life if you want to do something great," Grays said.He tried starting up at least two other businesses before Extraordinary Banana Pudding,"I started a clothing company, an online shipping company, none of it worked before."Grays was determined. He grew up in Webster and Imperial Beach, and as a kid his grandmother came to visit, "my grandmother came down here from Mississippi, she made [banana pudding] for a bunch of our family members and I fell in love with it instantly!"Grays said it was his great-grandmother's recipe that's been handed down generations. After his grandmother passed away he realized he could keep their legacy alive.He struggled at first getting the permits for the business, but once the doors opened and customers tasted his creations, they were sold.He expanded from the traditional banana pudding flavor to everything from cheesecake to pistachio.Thursday a couple drove all the way down from Oceanside for the pudding that's catching fire on social media.Grays said a family came all the way from Texas and vowed to come back every summer until he could open up a location closer to home.Grays' business has been so successful, he's opening another shop in Las Vegas in August, headed by his brother. I guess you could say the proof was in the pudding."It’s been a blessing the community has been really really supportive and I couldn’t imagine this, I really couldn’t," he said getting emotional.Success holds a deep meaning for him and his family and he wants to encourage others to chase their dreams, "you gotta go out and get what you want, you gotta try out here because look, I did it in the middle of COVID so can you."A feat even more impressive after looking at the statistics. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Evel Knievel’s son is on a collision course with the Walt Disney Co. and Pixar over a movie daredevil character named Duke Caboom. A federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed in Las Vegas accuses the moviemaker of improperly basing the “Toy Story 4” character on Knievel. Las Vegas-based K and K Promotions accuses Disney-owned Pixar of intentionally modeling the Caboom character, voiced by Keanu Reeves in the movie, after Knievel — although Knievel’s name is never mentioned.Knievel's famous stunts in the 1960s and ‘70s included motorcycle jumps over the Caesars Palace fountain in Las Vegas and a rocket shot into Snake River Canyon in Idaho. The Walt Disney Co. says it will defend itself from what it calls Knievel's meritless claims.“Evel Knievel did not thrill millions around the world, break his bones and spill his blood just so Disney could make a bunch of money,” Kelly Knievel said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.Knievel was seriously injured many times during more than 75 motorcycle jumps. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several streets were shut down in La Mesa Sunday morning after someone reportedly opened fire at a motorcyclist. Police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Marian Street. According to police, someone fired at least three shots at the motorcyclist, causing him to crash into a nearby fence. The motorcyclist wasn’t hit with gunfire during the shooting, but police say he was taken to the hospital with leg injuries due to the crash. At this time police are searching for a dark-colored sedan last seen heading east on University after the shooting. 631
