NEW YORK, N.Y. – Barnes & Noble has warned its customers of a cybersecurity attack which may have exposed consumer information. The bookstore chain informed its customers of the attack in an email Wednesday night, but said their payment information and other financial data has not been compromised, because it’s encrypted and not accessible. However, the email obtained by CNN and Business Insider says the attack resulted in unauthorized access to company systems that do contain customers’ email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, and telephone numbers. The company says it doesn’t currently have evidence that this data has been exposed, but it cannot be ruled out at this stage in the investigation. The company says it learned of the attack on Saturday, Oct. 10.“We take the security of our IT systems extremely seriously and regret sincerely that this incident has occurred,” wrote Barnes & Noble. “We know also that it is concerning and inconvenient to receive notices such as this. We greatly appreciate your understanding and thank you for being a Barnes & Noble customer.”The news of the cyber-attack comes one day after the business experienced a “systems failure” that caused an outage to NOOK content.A spokesperson for the company told Business Insider that the attack was linked to the problems with NOOK and issues processing orders at its stores. 1388

NEW YORK (AP) — Macy’s said Thursday that it’s laying off 3,900 corporate staffers, roughly 3% of its overall workforce, as the pandemic takes a financial toll on the retailer's sales and profits. The headcount reduction will save the department store chain 0 million per year.Like many of its non-essential peers, Macy’s was forced to close its physical stores to curb the spread of the coronavirus, evaporating sales.Since early May, Macy’s has been gradually reopening its stores, which had been closed since March 18.The New York-based company furloughed a majority of its workers as the pandemic took hold in the U.S. However, it was announced Thursday that most remaining furloughed employees would be returning to work starting July 5.Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette has said that customers are coming back, but it needs to cut costs to readjust its business to a new climate.“COVID-19 has significantly impacted our business. While the re-opening of our stores is going well, we do anticipate a gradual recovery of business, and we are taking action to align our cost base with our anticipated lower sales,” said Gennette. “These were hard decisions as they impact many of our colleagues. I want to thank all of our colleagues – those who have been active and those on furlough – for helping us get through this difficult time, and I want to express my deep gratitude to the colleagues who are departing for their service and contributions. We look forward to welcoming back many of our furloughed colleagues the first week of July.” 1544
No Crime Stoppers reward will be given to the woman who alerted police of the Waffle House shooter's whereabouts after he killed multiple people in Antioch. That's because the woman did not submit a tip through Crime Stoppers, instead, calling 911 with the suspect's location. "I get goosebumps talking about it," Lydia French said as she recalled the day that the suspect was caught. French spotted the man coming out of the woods near her worksite, next to where the suspect lived, when she called police. She then spotted the suspect a second time and called 911 again. "When he came out of the woods the second time and I got a good look at him, oh, I knew. I knew for sure. I called 911 back the second time and said, 'Your guy is right here. It's him,'" French said. She said police responded immediately."It was crazy. I've never seen so many vehicles just storm an area like they did," she said. While French called in the tip to 911, she was surprised that she wasn't given a reward from Crime Stoppers, and many others were confused about the situation as well."Unfortunately, we cannot pay the reward on this as Crime Stoppers was contacted after they advised the police department," an email from Crime Stoppers read.Crime Stoppers is a separate entity from the police department. "I actually thought they were hand-in-hand," French said. According to Liz Parrott, the chair of Nashville Crime Stoppers, to get a reward from Crime Stoppers, tipsters have to call the tip line, (615) 74-CRIME, or submit the tip through their mobile app. In the case of the Waffle House manhunt, French called 911. She never called Crime Stoppers, not until a month later to inquire about the reward. Crime Stoppers is designed to get tips in cold cases or in cases where someone with information wants to remain anonymous, and it generally isn't used in active crimes like the Waffle House manhunt."Anytime there's an active crime in progress, 911 is always best," Parrot said. While French said it isn't about the money, she wanted to get her story out so the public would know in the future: If you want the Crime Stoppers reward, you need to reach out to Crime Stoppers before the police. "I'm glad I could do what I could do to make the community and everybody feel safer, I just hope the families get justice," French said.French was given a ,000 reward from the TBI for her assistance in the case. 2478
