SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs. For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- For the first time in decades, NASA is moving closer to sending people to the moon, or even Mars. Naval Base San Diego is playing a key role in that process. This week the USS John P. Murtha left Naval Base San Diego to test recovery efforts of NASA’s mock Orion capsule.“We’re going to ensure that once it comes down, once it hits that water, that everything from then on is totally safe,” says Retired Navy Pilot and President of the San Diego Air & Space Museum Jim Kidrick. The amphibious ship sends a crew into the Pacific Ocean, then uses smaller boats to guide the capsule back to the USS Murtha. The Orion has an environmental control system, a heat shield that can withstand 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, radiation control and parachutes. NASA says the first recovery test aboard the USS Murtha was a success.“By the time they put people in that capsule its going to work flawlessly.” Naval Base San Diego will be removing the Orion test model from the USS Murtha and putting in on display tomorrow.10News will be there to give you a personal look at the capsule. 1095
