A Wisconsin woman's death was possibly caused by an infection from a dog lick, the same infection that is plaguing one West Bend, Wisc. man. Earlier this month Greg Manteufel developed a similar infection, resulting in the amputation of his hands and legs. Doctors believe it was from a bacteria transferred to him when a dog licked him. Sharon Larson had just gotten a puppy. It nipped at her, causing a minor cut. A day after taking him to the vet for a check-up, Larson was rushed to the hospital. “I was told she could get struck by lightning four times and live, win the lottery twice,” said Sharon’s husband Dan Larson. “That’s how rare this is supposed to be."Dan Larson is still in shock. He thought she had the flu.“General antibiotics that they put her on didn’t do anything,” he said. Within two days at Wheaton Franciscan in Franklin, Sharon Larson was dead, at 58-years-old. “I feel like I got robbed. Lost my right arm. My best friend,” Dan Larson said. Doctors told him she tested positive for capnocytophaga. They say the bacteria, found in the saliva of most dogs, cats, even some humans, is rarely problematic and almost never deadly. But when certain people come in contact with it, it can have devastating consequences, like for Sharon. “I had no knowledge,” said Sharon’s son Steven Larson.Sharon’s son wants more answers since there is no real tracking of how many cases there have been.“What do you want people to know? After months of protests, sometimes becoming violent, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced Thursday that the city is banning the use of tear gas by his city’s police.Wheeler said everyone has an obligation to create change, and now is the time to change the city’s policy on using tear gas.“During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County and State Police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler said. “We need something different. We need it now.“Arson, vandalism, and violence are not going to drive change in this community. I expect the police to arrest people who engage in criminal acts. I expect the District Attorney to prosecute those who commit criminal acts. And I expect the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those individuals accountable. We must stand together as a community against violence and for progress.”The issue of using tear gas amid protests has become a legal battle, as demonstrators say that the use of tear gas to disperse a crowd violates their constitutional rights. In June, U.S. District Judge March Hernandez ruled that the use of tear gas on protesters in Portland could only be used when lives are at risk.The police responded on Thursday by saying gas is a tool needed by officers to control crowds when protests become violent.“Banning the lawful use of CS will make it very difficult to address this kind of violence without resorting to much higher levels of physical force, with a correspondingly elevated risk of serious injury to members of the public and officers,” the Portland Police said in a statement. “CS, while effective, is a significantly lower level of force than impact weapons, which would very likely be necessary to disperse riotous groups with its prohibition. We do not want to use gas. We do not want to use any force.”As to why tear gas is used instead of police going in to make an arrest?“To make an arrest in the middle of a crowd intent on destruction and injuring people, it takes considerable resources--large numbers of officers that we do not have,” the police said. “Not only do we not have enough PPB officers to respond in this manner, our area partners have stated they will not come to our aid, given the climate in Portland.”The city’s downtown has dealt with protests and unrest since Memorial Day following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Adding to the challenges for law enforcement in recent weeks, counter-protesters have arrived and clashed with Black Lives Matter supporters.The unrest culminated on August 29 when Aaron Danielson was shot and killed. The suspect in the case, Michael Forest Reinoehl, was later killed by US Marshals in Olympia, Washington. The US Department of Justice claimed that Reinoehl was a supporter of ANTIFA. Many platforms are trying to make sure what you're searching for, what you're seeing and what you're reading is factual.Pick a platform or a search engine and it's not hard to find what you're looking for.“Remember in 2016, no one took social media seriously on either side,” said Jason Mollica, a professor of communications at American University in Washington DC.He teaches digital and social media analytics and public relations. He analyzes just how we communicate. These days, a lot of our conversing is over the internet. As the election inches closer, Mollica and his students are watching and discussing what's happening on social media platforms.“It’s not that much different but the stakes are higher, not from the perspective of voting but as in what these socia lnetworks are trying to do or not do it the wake of what happened in 2016,” Mollica said.Take Facebook for instance. The social site has been under scrutiny and they know it. Mark Zuckerberg posted from his own account about what changes the site is making, including informational posts about voting and how and where to vote. Facebook will block new political ads in the final week before the election, and they say they'll be working with officials to remove misinformation about voting.There are also rules against COVID-19 threats surrounding voting.Twitter is also taking a stand. Mollica says you might see something trending but if there's a problematic post, the original content will likely be pulled.“We’re not gonna allow this content to continue is something is shared by Joe Biden or Donald Trump or any political party,” Mollica said. “They’re going to make sure it’s taken down because they want to mitigate the negative news or the false news that comes out from certain accounts.”Twitter says it has election teams focusing on integrity, and the company is launching initiatives to help users find original sources of information. You'll also be able to report misleading information.“This isn’t censorship,” Mollica said. “This is something where social networks are saying, ‘Look, we understand we’re a news cycle.’ At least from Twitter’s perspective, they share news. They want to be a place where people get news. They’re looking… from a standpoint of you wouldn’t see that on a television station necessarily, why should you see that on twitter?”And Google, the site many turn to to search for anything and everything, has modified its autocomplete policies, removing predictions that could be viewed as claims for or against a specific party. And that is no easy task.“Think of a search giant like google. They can’t pull content off the internet but they can definitely take key words from search results and say we’re not going to show those to people,” Mollica said.Donald McLaughlin, co-founder of the Denver Based CP-Cyper said, it’s not that internet content is missing. Google has just made information harder to find. McLaughlin says, however, it doesn't mean that you can't find it on other search platforms.“Use a different search engine,” McLaughlin said. “There is Bing, DuckDuckGo, a few others that are meant to be less persuasive, less filtered that will give you exactly what you search for versus what they want you to see or what they think you want.”“So, Google trying to mitigate it somehow is a great start but you think about it’s basically putting a small cork in a huge hole and it’s still leaking and you can’t really stop it,” Mollica said.Most experts would agree it’s unfortunate that it has come to this.“We’ve gotten to a place now where misinformation does spread like wildfire on social media. People will sensationalize to get likes to get people to follow them and really doing the research to vet whether something is true or not is very important,” Mollica said.He says that's true whether you're buying a car, or voting. After initially being deadlocked on a vote to certify election results, The Wayne County Board of Canvassers voted unanimously to certify election results Tuesday evening. The motion to hold another vote came following hours of public comments condemning Republican canvassers' decisions to vote against the certification.The board of canvassers vote initially tied 2 to 2 along party lines. But just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the board filed a motion and voted to certify the results under the stipulation that Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson does a comprehensive audit of the election in the county.President Trump also tweeting praise to canvassers who initially blocked the certification, saying "Wow! Michigan just refused to certify the election results! Having courage is a beautiful thing.
