TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday reiterated China's pledge to take an "impartial" stand on the sinking of a South Korean warship."The sinking of the warship Cheonan is an unfortunate incident," Wen said during an interview with Japanese public broadcaster NHK. "We have offered condolences to the victims on many occasions."What China has in mind in approaching the incident, in which 46 South Korean sailors died after their warship sank in March, is maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, he said.China attaches importance to the joint investigation conducted by South Korea and other countries and the reactions of various parties, and will take its position on the basis of truth and facts, he added.China appealed for calm on the part of the concerned parties so as to avoid a further escalation of tension and even conflict, he said. The Chinese premier said China understands the current difficult situation President Lee Myung-bak and the South Korean government are facing.China will seek information from various sources and seriously study it before making clear its stand in "a fair and objective manner," he said."We will adopt an impartial position," he said. China also maintains that any approach on it must serve the fundamental interest of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, he added.Wen said Japan is an important country in Northeast Asia and a close neighbor of China and South Korea. China is ready to cooperate with Japan on such issues as safeguarding security in Northeast Asia, he added.Japan is the second leg of Wen's four-nation Asian tour, which has already taken him to South Korea. He will also visit Mongolia and Myanmar.

BEIJING ,May 6 -- China Mobile on Wednesday launched an online platform that enables its subscribers to read and download digital publications through cell phones and e-book readers, as part of its effort to profit from the country's emerging mobile reading market. The world's biggest cellphone carrier in terms of subscribers kicked off an e-book store similar to Apple's iBook store, which gives users wireless access to a series of online publications such as e-books, comics and magazines."Reading habits have fundamentally changed," said Gao Nianshu, general manager of China Mobile's data department. He said the company hopes the new platform will attract over 200 million users in the near future. Primary school students in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, read e-books. China Mobile hopes its newly launched platform will attract over 200 million users in the near future.According to figures from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, cellphone users in the country reached 780 million at the end of March. Of that group, mobile readers surpassed 155 million, the ministry said.Interest in e-book readers made by firms such as Hanwang Technology, Amazon and Founder since last year also significantly boosted demand for mobile reading.Gao said China Mobile's new e-book platform, which currently covers about 40 percent of the best selling books in the country, has attracted over 15 million users during four months of testing in eight areas. He said the company's online e-book store will also support the iPad, the tablet computer launched by Apple Inc last month."Mobile reading has become a popular service with mobile Internet users in China," said Zhang Yanan, analyst from research firm Analysys International, in a research note. But he said that although about 45 percent of Chinese mobile Internet users read books at least once a day by mobile phone, few of them are willing to pay for online content.According to China Mobile, the subscription fee for its online e-book store is up to five yuan per month, 40 percent of which will be shared with copyright owners.Zhong Tianhua, head of China Mobile's subsidiary in Zhejiang province, who oversees the company's online e-book store business, said the company's strategy is to attract as many users as possible in the first three years with the lowest pricing possible.Companies including Nokia, Motorola, Hanwang, Founder, Datang and Huawei Technologies have released products that support China Mobile's new service. But many e-book makers have also established their own online e-book stores, putting them in competition with China Mobile. It was reported earlier this week that China Mobile plans to team up with Foxconn Electronics of Taiwan province to produce its own e-book readers.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- China's economic development environment remains "very complex" with difficulties and problems persisting in the process of its economic recovery, said the State Council Wednesday. The national economy was heading toward the goal of macroeconomic regulation, with a strong foundation for economic recovery, said a statement released after a Wednesday executive meeting of the State Council, the Cabinet, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao. The fast economic growth can be, to a large extent, attributed to the stimulus package. As the economic recovered, old difficulties remained and new problems emerged, said the statement. With trade protectionism on the rise and major economies suffering from climbing unemployment rates, uncertainties remained in the global economy, said the statement.Severe drought in southwestern China, how to increase grain production and rural people's income, growing inflation expectations, especially soaring housing prices, managing financial risks, and pressure of increasing unemployment were posing great challenges to the economy, said the Cabinet."We should never rest in the face of these problems and difficulties," said the statement. In resolving the problems, China would give top priority to speeding up the transformation of the economic development mode and improving the quality of economic growth, according to the statement. The government would introduce measures to boost agricultural production, improve financial management and regulation, stabilize prices, rein in soaring property prices, expand domestic demand, push forward economic restructuring, increase energy saving and emission cuts, enhance the opening-up policy and improve the people's livelihood.

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday agreed to further the ties of the two countries.Hu said China-Germany relations are developing soundly, and leaders of the two countries have maintained close contact.China and Germany enjoy good opportunities to move forward their ties under the current complex and changeable international circumstances, said Hu. China is willing to join hands with Germany to raise bilateral ties to a new high, he added. He said China welcomes German President Horst Kohler's visit to China in May and his attendance of the Shanghai World Expo. The two countries have vigorously cooperated in the fields of economics and trade, culture, education, science and technology and justice, and enhanced communication and coordination on regional and international issues.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington, the United States, April 13, 2010. Hu and Merkel are in Washington to attend the Nuclear Security Summit. As to climate change, Hu emphasized the issue concerns the world's sustainable growth and the well-being of the peoples of different countries, so it requires joint response from the international community. The Chinese president said the results of the Copenhagen climate change conference were hard-won, and developed countries should honor their promises to provide fund and transfer technology to developing countries.
