ALPINE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Some residents in Alpine are ramping up their yard work after Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for the Calfornia's most wildfire-prone areas. Alpine residents have a name for yard work. "It's a necessary evil. We have to clear it out," Jonathan Hesse said. 10News met Hesse as he and his son Ben were raking brush and chainsawing a dead tree on their front yard. "The drought, they [the trees] couldn't handle it anymore. So they died," Hesse said, pointing at the row of what used to be lush trees. He said the time had come to chop them down because he was sure they would ignite his entire 2.5-acre property. In the last two decades, the Hesse's have had three close calls. Their last evacuation was the 2018 West Fire. Luckily, they survived, as did their home. But they are not taking chances. "This year, there's a lot of weeds, and that's going to be tough to keep up with," Hesse said. Luckily, he has a helpful son and a sturdy tractor to help with the clean-up process. They will eventually put their large pile of dead logs and branches through a wood chipper to make mulch. Thanks to the work they did today, the flammability of their home is much lower than it was yesterday. "That's one thing we want to do. We want to make sure it doesn't get out of control," Hesse said. After America reached the grim milestone of more than 10 million positive coronavirus cases in just 10 months, healthcare systems in multiple areas around the country are warning their hospital bed capacity is nearing or at 100 percent full.In North Dakota, the governor said this week their hospitals have reached their limit, and depending how the next few weeks go, facilities could be pushed past their capabilities.He issued an urgent plea asking residents to take steps to slow the spread of the coronavirus. He also amended a state order to allow asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for COVID-19 to continue working in COVID-19 units of a healthcare facility.“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure now,” Governor Doug Burgum said. “We can see the future two, three weeks out, and we know that we have severe constraints.”Bergum is asking that businesses and events or gatherings be reduced to 25 percent or a max of 50 people, and said face coverings should be required. However, he did not issue a statewide mask mandate.In Iowa, UnityPoint Health Des Moines, which runs four hospitals in the capital city, says they are at capacity and all their beds are full.Polk County, where Des Moines is located, saw the most new hospitalizations on one day Monday, with 191 new coronavirus patients.The county has issued a “plea to our community to please help in our fight against COVID-19.” They say they are “facing bed shortages and staffing shortages,” and ask people to wear a mask, wash hands, and practice social distancing so the healthcare system does not become overwhelmed.On Monday, the Iowa Health Department said there were more than 1,100 people hospitalized in the state with coronavirus. Iowa has a total of about 2,800 inpatient hospital beds available, with 382 of them in intensive care units spread around the state.Hospitalizations around the country have nearly doubled since late September. Tuesday morning, roughly 59,000 Americans were in the hospital because of the coronavirus.Health experts are worried about the recent spike in coronavirus cases. Amateur Ali Gibb enjoyed a trip to the golf course that Tiger Woods could only dream off earlier this week, hitting three hole-in-ones on the same day.The 51-year-old managed the incredible feat while successfully defending her championship title at the Croham Hurst Golf Club in Surrey, south of London.She hit her first ace on the par-three fifth hole that morning during the 36-hole tournament, before repeating the trick at the same hole during the afternoon.Gibb completed her incredible hat-trick at the par-three 11th and admitted she's still struggling to come to terms with what happened."It was a crazy day and what happened was quite unbelievable, it took its time to sink in," she told CNN Sport."Most people might spend all their lives trying to get one, I got three in five hours."Club pro Adam Aram said he was impressed when Gibb carded the first hole-in-one but by the by the time she sank the third it was "unbelievable.""I said to her what have you been drinking at lunch time, you can't have three holes in one on the same day - two's enough," Aram told CNN Sport."I think after the second win, she was too excited to concentrate and then she had a third -- I don't think she could quite work our what was happening, neither of us could."Before her unforgettable Tuesday, Gibb had registered three hole-in-ones in her entire time playing golf -- her first being at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate in South Africa."I did some part-time consultancy work for a friend who runs a travel company and the course overlooked the bay," she said."I was thinking, 'that's it I'm done -- I've done my life hole-in-one."But now I have managed to double that -- which was completely unexpected."'You don't play golf'Gibb was introduced to the sport 20 years ago while working in London when a colleague invited her to join their golf day in Woburn, north of London.She immediately turned to her father for advice who had been playing since he was a child."He looked at me and said 'you don't play golf,' I said 'I know that dad, but the golf day is at Woburn, so I need to be able to play,'" she said.Gibb's father taught her some essentials -- like how to get out of a bunker -- and set her off on her way.
