SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With COVID-19 cases surging again across California, friends of a local, single dad diagnosed with coronavirus are rallying to support him.Alfredo Huerta, 53, who lives in Linda Vista, first started feeling sick in early November. His first symptom was shortness of breath, which he initially blamed on his asthma."He then feeling started feeling joint pain, his whole body ached and continued to worse. Then he got a fever," said his friend Alana Hoang.Hoang says two Fridays ago, while Huerta was waiting in his primary care doctors office, his conditions worsened."Shortness of breath got worse. He couldn't breathe ... He ended up in the ER," said Hoang.There, Huerta tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted."He was very scared. He didn't want his kids to have to go through something so traumatic again, like they did with their mother," said Hoang.Huerta, a father of four - two adult children and two teens - lost his wife Sara nearly five years ago to cancer.Alone in the hospital, his thoughts turned to his children."He was afraid he wasn't going to be there for them, so he started thinking the worst," said Huerta.Meanwhile, Hoang started a Gofundme campaign to help the man she says is "part of the family."Huerta, a gardener, has been working with her for 15 years."He is just so kind and gives of himself. He works harder than anyone I've know. We just pray every day he can go back to his normal," said Hoang.This weekend, the news she was waiting for: Huerta was released. He remains weak with some breathing issues. He'll be retested soon, and he's not sure when he'll return to work.Hoang says Huerta has a message for others."Take precautions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A plan to permanently remove the traffic along Normal Street in Hillcrest and replace it with a promenade will be voted on Tuesday. If approved, the westside traffic lanes would become a pedestrian walkway with dedicated bike lanes. It would also make room for the weekly Hillcrest farmers market and other events. “They call it a promenade but where are people promenading to,” says Linda Hanna, owner of Salon Antoine. Hanna has owned the business near the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue for almost 20 years. “We are in favor of something like this, but we need to think it through.”Other business owners are worried because the project would eliminate a driveway to a nearby shopping center.“If you don’t close that driveway, you have a driveway going right to the park, and that’s a real problem,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association. To add space to the east side lanes, some parking spaces will be moved. The Hillcrest Business Association says there are plans to add dozens of parking spaces near Lincoln Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unions were the big winners as the San Diego Airport Authority decided to require contractors to enter into a project labor agreement in a 5-3 vote. PLA’s entail that unions will not strike and the airport will in turn run all the work through labor unions. Opposition to the PLA says they are worried the project will be even more costly to accommodate union dues and that non-union local workers will be excluded from the job. “It’s completely unfair,” said Steve Stroder, who represents” [they] are being told they can’t work on a project in San Diego.” Unions say their track record of completing marquee jobs on time like the county courthouse and under budget speaks for itself. “I mean we’ve proven that we can do this work,” said Keith Maddox of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, ”our workers are local.” The vote will be made after several hours of public testimony. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A homeowner woke up in her Del Cerro home and realized a burglar had been in her room, stealing from her.Just off College Avenue, Kathleen Wavra was sleeping in last Monday morning. Feeling sick, she had taken medication with a sleep aid. Wavra, who is deaf in one ear, was sleeping on her "good ear."She says something jolted her out of sleep around 9:30 a.m.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Startled and stood up and looked immediately at my dresser and saw the missing jewelry boxes," said Wavra.All three jewelry boxes were gone. A panicked Wavra quickly found this: Her front door open with the locks and wood splinters on the ground. The wooden door is about 25 years old.Police believe the intruder either kicked or shoved his way in.
