Those two words cause a lot of stress, anxiety, even depression in so many Americans out there.Like Denise Ferguson.“Oh, my student loans are going to outlast me!” Ferguson said.Like 41 million other Americans, Denise is drowning in student loan debt — 0,000 in her case.“It’s funny because I’m an attorney and a lot of people assume that we attorneys are rich and wealthy,” she said.Well, rest assured, Denise is not one of those types of attorneys.She works with abused and neglected children in the foster care system.“We’re the only alleged first-world country that has all these issues with student loans and people being put into debt in order to do something good,” she said.Denise went to a state school in Pennsylvania for college, the University of Akron for law school.Fifteen years later, the amount of student loan debt she has barely has a dent in it.“If I win the lotto, it’ll get paid off. If I don’t win the lotto, there’s no hope that that’s ever going away,” Denise said. “My house only cost ,000 if that puts anything in perspective.”The average student loan debt for graduates is about ,000. It's the second-highest consumer debt category in the U.S., coming in only after mortgage debt.Since the federal CARES Act went into effect, more than 40 million federal student loan borrowers have had their payments paused and interest rates set to 0%.While that is set to expire on Jan. 31 now, it’s not clear what the incoming Biden administration will do.There are pushes and proposals to wipe out student loan debt — anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But nothing is clear, nothing is done, and experts say, do not rely on what could be.“Do not wait until January to expect any executive orders, there’s just so much uncertainty going on right now,” said Dr. Lakshmi Balasubramanyan, a banking and finance professor at Case Western Reserve University.She said it is crucial to have a plan in place before payments start back up again.Contact your loan servicer and talk through your individual situation.If you’ve lost or changed your job during the pandemic, switch to an income-based repayment plan, or discuss hardship options.“If you plan for the worst-case scenario, the best-case scenario is where there’s some loan forgiveness — then that would be a pleasant surprise but right now, you should plan to pay it off because you don’t want to go into default status,” Balasubramanyan said.She also advises heading to studentaid.gov to see if you possibly qualify for any loan forgiveness programs.Jeremy DiTullio, of the Cleveland Financial Group, says the worst thing borrowers can do is wait and hope for relief that may not come.“I would plan for starting to make your payments. Worst case scenario is that there is some forgiveness or some relief and now you have choices,” DiTullio said. He also suggests borrowers "earn differently" during the pandemic if they have to, to avoid defaulting. College students and loans seem to go hand in hand, and student loan debt is an ever increasing problem in the U.S.But it might surprise you what some college students are doing with any excess loan money they may have after paying for things like tuition, books, and housing.A study by the Student Loan Report found that approximately one out of every five students with loans have used loan money in some form to invest in cryptocurrencies—in other words, things like Bitcoin.But financial advisers caution that may not be the best decision.“My gut reaction,” said financial advisor Martin Walsh with Brown and Tedstrom, “is that it’s probably a bad idea.”Walsh said using borrowed dollars to invest in speculative assets, such as Bitcoin, would make him “very nervous.”Cryptocurrency is the formal word for a type of digital money that uses encryption to transfer funds, independently of a central bank.Walsh cautions:  “buyer beware.”“There’s been a ton of talk about cryptocurrency over the last year,” Walsh said, “mostly because of the massive run up in price.”Bitcoin — the biggest player in the Crypto game—saw prices for their “coins” at around ,000 in December. But fast forward two months to February and the price plummeted to ,000.Walsh has had clients ask about it mostly because “their friends have invested in them and have made money.”  But he says that as a general rule the firm he works for, Brown and Tedstrom, won’t advise clients to invest in cryptocurrency.“It seems fun and easy, and things have doubled, tripled, even quadrupled. But there’s incredible volatility in investing in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” said Walsh.Paul Foley, a big supporter of the technology behind cryptocurrency, says he has invested “quite a bit” in Ethereum, another player in the cryptocurrency realm. He says anyone investing now should see this as a “10 to 15 year plan”—not a short term way to make money.“I plan on holding for a very long time,” said Foley.But even he says that the notion of using borrowed funds, i.e. student loans, to invest in speculative assets like Ethereum is “a terrible idea.”Both Foley and Walsh say anyone looking to invest in this emerging field needs to do their homework. COATZACOALCOS, Mexico (AP) — Gang members burst into a bar, blocked all the exits and then started a fire that killed 26 people and injured about a dozen others, Mexican officials said Wednesday.Authorities said the attack in the Gulf coast city of Coatzacoalcos late Tuesday apparently was overseen by a man who had been recently arrested but released."The criminals went in, closed the doors, the emergency exits, and set fire to the place," President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at his daily morning news conference.Veracruz state police said the attack targeted the "Bar Caballo Blanco," or "White Horse Bar." It advertised "quality, security and service," private rooms for .50 "all night," ''sexy girls" and a pole dance contest.It is located just off a busy commercial street in Coatzacoalcos, a city whose main industry has long been oil and oil refining.On Wednesday afternoon, relatives of the victims gathered anxiously outside state prosecutors' offices with photos that could be used to identify their loved ones.Those who had confirmation sat weeping in plastic chairs.Vanessa Galindo Blas, 32, said her husband died in the fire. She sat shouting: "He didn't deserve this. Why did they do this to me? I don't to be here. I want to be with you."She said her 29-year-old husband, Erick Hernández Galindo, worked as the DJ in the bar and left behind three children.Among the dead were two Filipino sailors. Ramón Guzman, the agent for the ship Caribe Lisa, brought the passports for the two men who were on leave and had been unaccounted for."This is the most inhuman thing possible," López Obrador said."It is regrettable that organized crime acts in this manner," he said, adding, "It is more regrettable that there may be collusion with authorities."López Obrador said local prosecutors should be investigated because "the alleged perpetrators had been arrested, but they were freed."Gov. Comet NEOWISE may be on its way out, but that doesn't mean that the night sky's light show is set to end.According to the American Meteor Society, two meteor showers are set to peak in the coming days, which could result in several fireballs that light up the sky.One of those showers is the Southern Delta-Aquariids, which, according to NASA, are typically visible between July 12 and Aug. 23. But the agency reports that the system will peak in activity early Monday morning.At its viewing peak — in the southern hemisphere on a clear dark night — the Southern Delta-Aquariids can produce up to 25 meteors an hour, NASA says. Unfortunately, Americans won't be able to see that many fireballs, but experts still say some may still be visible — especially for those with minimal light pollution and clear skies.NASA says the Southern Delta-Aquariids will be most visible between moonset and first dawn on early Monday morning.The American Meteor Society also reports that the Alpha Capricornids will also peak early next week. While the AMS notes that the shower isn't particularly strong (about five meteors an hour), the meteors it does produce are particularly bright and visible.The AMS says the Alpha Capricornids will peak Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.According to the Associated Press, Comet NEOWISE will be visible in the night sky through mid-August before it heads back out toward the outer solar system. 1430
