The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine does not increase the risk of autism and does not trigger autism in children who are at risk, according to a new study of over 650,000 children.Researchers used a population registry to evaluate whether the MMR vaccine increased the risk of autism in children born in Denmark between 1999 and 2010. A total of 657,461 children were followed through August 2013, with the researchers documenting diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder as well as known risk factors including age of the parents, diagnosis of autism in a sibling, preterm birth and low weight at birth.Over 95% of the children received the MMR vaccine, and 6,517 were diagnosed with autism. The MMR vaccine did not increase the risk of autism in children who were not considered at risk for the disorder and did not trigger it in those who were, according to the study, published Monday in the journal 918
The House Judiciary Committee will vote Wednesday on legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for more than 1 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. The proposal is designed to protect undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children and are protected under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, as well as other immigrants with temporary protected status or deferred enforced departure.Holders of temporary protected status -- which provides protection to people displaced by natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other events -- and deferred enforced departure, another form of relief from removal for designated countries, have faced similarly uncertain futures as the administration has moved to end the programs. The measure has been broken up into two bills for the committee vote. A third bill to allow Venezuelan nationals to be eligible for temporary protected status is also included in the lineup.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democratic Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and other Democrats unveiled the original legislation in March. The bills faces an uphill battle. While it could gain some traction in the Democratic-controlled House, it'd still need to pass the Senate, held by Republicans, and be signed by President Donald Trump, who has sought to end the DACA program. 1360

The list of places intended for sporting events, entertainment, and other everyday activities, that are instead being used as temporary hospitals just got longer. On Tuesday, work began to convert the indoor tennis center at the Billie Jean King U.S. Open facility into a 350-bed temporary hospital. It joins a group of nine locations in or near New York City being converted into temporary hospitals. All but one of the temporary facilities are intended to handle non-coronavirus patients. However, doctors are fast learning that there may be no such thing."That was one of the initial most surprising things for us," said Dr. Eric Wei, NYC Health + Hospitals' chief quality officer. "People who got hit by cars or were beat up," Dr. Wei continued, "had pneumonia that's consistent for COVID-19."It's why the city is now instructing its medical personnel to assume that all patients have coronavirus. The temporary facilities are part of a constellation of hospitals in the city and its suburbs where patients can be moved and treated, depending on their condition. More than 170 hospitals and temporary hospitals are part of the network, and on Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo promised that a central command center would be operational by Tuesday to coordinate them all. "It is up and running," said Deanne Criswell, the city's emergency management commissioner at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. "It's located at the Javits Center."Criswell added that, for now, the command center is only coordinating between two locations, the U.S.N.S. Comfort hospital ship, and the temporary hospital at the Jacob Javits Center. The full center is not expected to be fully operational until next week. 1705
The officer who fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson in her home Saturday morning has resigned, Fort Worth interim police chief Ed Kraus said Monday. The officer may face criminal charges, Kraus said.Jefferson, 28, was killed around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a neighbor called dispatchers to report the woman's front door was open, police said.Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said the killing of Jefferson was unjustified."I'm so sorry. On behalf of the entire city of Fort Worth, I'm sorry," Price told reporters Monday. "To Atatiana's family, it's unacceptable. There is nothing that can justify what happened on Saturday morning. Nothing."A lawyer for Jefferson says an outside agency should be brought in to investigate the killing."We don't think that Fort Worth police should be investigating it on their own," attorney Lee Merritt told CNN Sunday. He said police reached out to his clients, but they'd rather talk with independent investigators about the shooting. What we knowJames Smith, Jefferson's neighbor, told the 1030
