Jayaratne, a senior leader in that country's Freedom Party, extended thanks for China's efforts to ensure the success of the conference on behalf of all participants.Co-chairman of ICAPP Standing Committee Jose De Venecia said China has made great contributions to the world's poverty alleviation cause, and so holding a conference on poverty alleviation in China was appropriate.He said the Kunming Proposal adopted in the conference will be submitted to the UN Millennium Development Goals summit scheduled for September.Later on Monday, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with a delegation from the Thai Democrat Party led by Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.More than 120 representatives from 57 political parties in 30 countries attended the conference. Some African political parties, the UN and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly sent observers to the meeting.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday.The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week.The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15. A fresh spell of heavy rains has pounded Guangxi since June 14, triggering floods in some regions of Guangxi.A statement on the center's website urges officials in several provinces, including Fujian, Zhejiang and Guangdong, to prepare for "possible floods and geological hazards".Guangxi flood control and drought relief headquarters said on Wednesday that, as of Tuesday, the death toll from the recent spell of bad weather had climbed to 10 in the province, with 15 missing, and direct economic losses of nearly 400 million yuan (.8 million). BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official has called for more efforts to promote increased awareness about energy-savings among the public and increase investments into research for energy-saving technologies.Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remark in his letter to sponsors of China's 20th national energy-saving publicity week (June 12 to June 18) that ended on Friday.Various campaigns and promotional activities were held during the week to increase awareness about conserving energy among all communities and also promote energy-saving practices, Li said in the letter.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said government should put more investment into research for energy-saving technologies.Additionally, long-term mechanisms for energy-savings should be established so that the 11th Five-Year Plan energy-saving goals could be realized, Li said.China seeks to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent in 2010 compared to 2005 levels, according to the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).The 20th national energy-saving publicity week was sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission and 13 other government agencies.
