ITHICA, N.Y. – Coronavirus concerns have people stocking up on products like facemasks, hand sanitizer and toilet paper, so much so that some store shelves are empty and online stock is running out. Cornell University professor Karan Girotra says fear creates shortages. “Panic buying arises out of rumors, unfounded information and a lack of confidence, so don’t believe everything you hear, don’t go out and buy things you don’t need,” said Girotra. Many of these products are made in America – Charmin toilet paper and Purell, for example.Girotra says you need to recognize coronavirus is a slow-moving event. Companies have time to adjust supply plans, unlike an event like a hurricane. Panic buying creates problems for people who need these items more than the average person.“Not everybody needs a facemask but people who are more high risk, people who interact with other individuals, people who have a public facing role, a cashier, somebody who is an Uber driver is probably more in need of one of these facemasks,” said Girotra. The professor says you likely won't see price increases, but if the cheap brands run out, you may be forced to buy more expensive ones.Girotra also says companies need to be more open about the supply they have. 1263

In the border land, boxing is a way of life. Las Cruces, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas has a deep history of boxing. It’s a sport about discipline, competition and drive, and according to Rene Carrasco, life can always be a fight. “Mexicans, we love boxing,” says Rene. “It use to be nothing but a man’s sport, you know Machismo type of deal, but it’s evolved since then.”Rene's 15-year-old daughter, Arianna Carrasco, is one of the best boxers for her age. “It’s like a high kind of, with all the adrenaline,” Arianna describes. “That’s why I love it. I just get really focused about what I’m about to do when I box.” The 15-year-old boxer is a five-time national champion in boxing. According to her father, she has only been boxing for three years. “It’s unheard of for girls to come in with such little experience and go to the top right away,” Rene says. However, Arianna fights for more than glory, she fights for those living in the border land. “I have a really close connection to the Mexican-American heritage,” Arianna says. “Everything with my family, I feel proud when I get to go out and show that.” “Almost everything is a fight when you’re Hispanic,” Rene says. "My dad is born and raised in Chihuahua Mexico. He came here when he was 30-years-old. And what they’ve gone through, it just a pride when my daughter can go out there and perform the way she does. In September, when we go to Poland, that’s for a world championship. That’s the goal. It shows no matter what your background is if you work hard, it will pay off. She’s a female Hispanic, she’s not supposed be able to do what she’s doing back in the day.”Arianna says when she fights, she represents both America and the people in La Cruces. "We’re just fighting to be known. We’re fighting to show everyone that we’re here, and we’re fighting for change,” she says. 1856

John Legend made a surprise visit to Dayton, Ohio, Sunday, a week after a shooting there left nine people dead and at least 31 others injured.The Grammy Award-winning singer, a native of Springfield, Ohio, about 30 minutes northeast of Dayton, put on a concert for the families of the victims and staff from local businesses in the city's Oregon District where the shooting took place.Before the concert, Legend met with Mayor Nan Whaley and employees of Heart Mercantile. The gift store is across the street from the site where a man armed with a .223-caliber high-capacity rifle unleashed a barrage of bullets on revelers enjoying a night out in the early morning hours of August 4. He was killed by police officers soon after he began firing.Whaley thanked Legend in a tweet for coming to shop in the district and talk about gun reform laws."It is more important now than ever for us to come together to support our local communities," Legend tweeted Sunday following his visit.In another tweet, Legend called for people to take action by calling their senators and demanding they vote for stronger gun safety laws.People who work in the Oregon District told CNN that the visit was therapeutic following an emotional week.Andy Rowe, assistant general manager at Blind Bob's, the venue where Legend performed, told CNN that the entire district appreciated the singer's visit."I think I can say the Oregon Historic District was profoundly moved to have @johnlegend bear witness to our heartache, and help heal our community," Rowe said in a text.Employees of Heart Mercantile said they were touched by Legend's visit."It felt like the first positive beautiful moment we've felt all week," Alison Bohman told CNN by text.
