BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Remote villages across Yongning County of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been connected to a safe water supply thanks to a newly-completed water project.The project, launched in August 2010 and concluded on Nov. 27, has ensured that 100,000 people in 44 villages of Yongning will have access to safe water for drinking.People in the county had long suffered from a severe shortage of safe water because the area's surface water contained excessive amounts of fluorin and iron.The project was initiated after local authorities increased their efforts to provide safe drinking water after Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the region.During an inspection to a well-drilling site at Yuanlin Village of southern Yongning on March 23, 2010, President Hu stressed that efforts be made to ensure more people have access to safe water supplies.

BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers have heard a series of the State Council's reports on the development of ethnic minorities, and regarding the country's health care reform and service industry, at a meeting Wednesday during the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.The meeting was presided over by Ismail Tiliwaldi, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.A total of 150 NPC Standing Committee members, including Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, as well as other vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee attended the meeting.Commissioned by the State Council, Yang Jing, minister in charge of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said in a report to the NPC Standing Committee that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the central government's supports in policy, planning and funding for the ethnic minority groups and regions had yielded remarkable achievements in the country's economic and social development.In the report, Yang also pledged that the government would continue to step up infrastructure development in ethnic minority regions and spend more on education, medical services and poverty relief.Zhang Ping, director of the National Development and Reform Commission, delivered a report on deepening health care reform at the meeting.The reform had achieved various levels of progress in promotion of medical insurance, grassroots medical services and equal access of health care services for the public, Zhang said.Zhang noted that the government would further expand the coverage of the medical insurance system, intensify supervision over medical service providers and make more progress in the reform of the country's publicly-owned hospitals.Zhang also delivered a report on accelerating the development of the country's secondary industries. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A revised version of China's Regulation on Work-Related Injury Insurance will take effect Saturday, raising compensation standards while expanding the coverage to more organizations.The previous regulation stipulated that the compensation to families of workers who die on the posts is no more than five times the average annual salary in the previous year. The sum varies depending on the regions where the workers are working.Under the current system, the national average compensation is about 100,000 yuan, but the lowest regional average compensation is about 40,000 yuan.The new regulation raises the compensation to 20 times the national annual disposable income for urbanites per capita in the previous year, which means about 340,000 yuan according to 2009 statistics.In addition, the revised regulation covers the country's public institutions, social groups, non-profit grass-root organizations, foundations, law firms and accounting firms.Previously, the rules only include enterprises and small businesses and their employees in the system.
