America's Paralyzed Veterans are urging disabled voters to make a plan for Election Day, and to read up on their rights before heading to the polls.Al Kovach has been there. As in, he tried to vote, and couldn't.“About 20 years ago, I went to cast a vote assuming the place would be wheelchair accessible and I was wrong and I was unable to vote, I was basically denied my right to vote,” Kovach said.Fast forward to today, and he says, we're still talking about polling and voting challenges for the disabled. Ever since that experience, he's opted for mail-in ballots. This year, he's urging everyone to plan ahead.“Unfortunately, there’s no ADA police going around and enforcing the law so when it comes to polling stations, if you go to a polling station and you can’t get in, your only recourse is to go to Department of Justice and file a complaint, but that doesn’t help you in that moment to cast your vote," said Kovach.As if it weren't complicated enough, he's reminding everyone to be mindful of the coronavirus. The disabled are medically fragile, he says, and more susceptible to serious implications from the coronavirus.“We are seeing a lot of people calling us with trouble with voting,” Kovach said. “I know in San Diego, we had someone who tried to vote last week and was unable to get inside the polling station and another gentleman in Chicago sat in line in his wheelchair for hours around people not socially distancing or wearing a mask.”The U.S. Government Accountability office sampled 178 polling places in 2016 and found that 60% had accessibility impediments, including steep ramps, lack of signage, and poor parking or paths. Federal law requires that polling places be accessible to all voters.“Election officials need to comply with not only the Help America Vote Act... but also the Americans with Disabilities Act, so it is important to make sure that all Americans are able to vote independently and privately,” said Ben Hovland, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, which focuses on election administration and how elections are run around the country.Hovland says elections officials everywhere are scrambling. Most everyone is adapting to COVID-19 restrictions, which has forced significant changes at the local level. He too is asking people to plan.“Record numbers of Americans will be voting by mail this year and vote by mail has some challenges for Americans with disabilities,” Hovland said. “We’ve seen states implement portals that work with assistive technology and we’ve seen ballots that utilize hole punches near the signature lines of the absentee ballot envelope.”“A polling station might focus on wheelchair accessibility but forget the fact that there are people who can’t see or can’t hear and I want to make sure that people with disabilities know you can bring a friend with them to help them cast their vote. That is their right,” Kovach said.Kovach adds there's a checklist on the Paralyzed Veterans of America Website. He recommends people check out what's on that list, and understand what works or won't work for you. An Ohio couple was stunned to find a Nazi symbol on a pizza they picked up from Little Caesars Pizza Saturday night.Jason Laska was running an errand for his wife and picked up a pizza from the Little Caesars in Brook Park.“I walked in. I said, ‘What do you guys have left?’ And they said a pepperoni and a cheese and I said ‘give me the pepperoni,’” Laska said.He told WEWS he paid for the grab-and-go pizza but didn’t look inside the box until he got home, but his wife said she was disgusted to find pepperonis carefully arranged in the shape of a backward swastika. They made it as a joke and it was never intended to go out to a customer, but it did.”The couple hopes the experience will be a teaching lesson for the employees who are allegedly under the age of 18.“What repercussions are they getting from that, just termination?” Misty Laska said, “When they can just go right down the street and find another job?”They told News 5 they chose to share their experience to encourage others to learn the history and hateful symbolism behind the Nazi slogan.“Even in a joking manner it’s absolutely unacceptable,” Jason Laska said.Misty Laska, who was the first to discover the hateful prank, encourages others to speak up when they hear or see people committing racist acts.“We’re trying to get rid of racism. An Idaho junior high school teacher is under investigation after he fed a puppy to a snapping turtle in front of students.Robert Crosland has taught science at Preston Junior High School for years. In a news release, Preston School District 201 Superintendent Marc Gee says his administration became aware of “a regrettable circumstance involving some of the biological specimens” on March 7.“The event occurred well after students had been dismissed and was not a part of any school-directed program,” Gee said in a news release. “We emphasize that at no time was the safety of students or staff compromised.”It’s unclear if the dog was alive or dead when Crosland fed it to the turtle. Administrators began investigating the incident immediately, according to Gee, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted. Crosland has not been cited or charged and has not been placed on leave, Gee said.“A part of any investigation includes determining the best course of action once the facts of the matter have been ascertained. This is not a situation that is easy, nor do we feel it is a measure that can be taken lightly,” Gee said.Crosland is a popular teacher who has exotic snakes and other animals in tanks around his classroom, according to multiple parents and students who contacted EastIdahoNews.com. An Arizona family is celebrating a major milestone. Baby Henley was born with a congenital heart defect or a hole in her heart. Weighing in at only 4 pounds and 7 ounces, there was a lot of concern about her health because she just would not eat."Because of the hole in her heart, she just could not eat, it was too difficult for her, so she struggled a lot to gain weight," said Megan Beebe, Henley's mother.So, from the age of 5 months old, Henley has relied on a feeding tube to get all of her nutrition."At one point, it was giving her 100% of her nutrition. We would put all of her formula, breast milk through the feeding tube," said Beebe.In her two years since she was born, Henley has had hundreds of doctor's appointments and five surgeries. She has also been working with a feeding therapist based out of the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona. Henley does not have cerebral palsy, but her mother tells KNXV they really liked the specialized therapist they have been working with, so they have stuck with the organization."We just had to keep working our way up, until one day she ate an entire Cheeto Puff all by herself," said Beebe.That one Cheeto Puff was a big milestone for Henley."It took her about 10 full minutes to eat one Cheeto Puff but she ate the whole Cheeto Puff all by herself, did not throw up," said Beebe, talking about the relief they felt. They were finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel of Henley's tough road to being able to eat without the aid of a feeding tube.After 27 months, Henley's feeding tube was finally removed. It was a big moment for Beebe. She tells KNXV she sometimes could not help but feel like a failure as a mother."Our number one job is to feed her and keep her alive, and we couldn't do that," said Beebe."The day we finally got to take her feeding tube out, it was like, it was just a miracle. Amid the pandemic, food banks are on average serving 60% more families than a year ago, according to a recent analysis by Feeding America. The analysis found that 80% of food banks in the Feeding America network have seen an increase in demand amid the pandemic.Despite this jump in demand, the organization says that food banks have “become accustomed” to increased demand for services. Feeding America’s analysis says that 40% of those going to food banks this year are doing so for the first time.Compounding issues for many families, food prices have jumped in the last year, according to USDA analysis. According to the USDA, the average cost of food prepared at home has increased 4% from October 2019 through October 2020. In the last 20 years, the average increase of food prices per year is 2%.The increase in prices has been most pronounced in meat, poultry and dairy. From October 2019 through October 2020, meat prices jumped 6.6%. Previously, meat prices generally increased 3% a year.The issue of increased prices was something that Feeding America leaders addressed last month as lawmakers have failed to come to an agreement on a new stimulus plan.“With food prices increasing at the fastest rate in 50 years and predictions that 1 in 4 children could face hunger this year, a 15 percent increase to the maximum SNAP benefit is the most effective way to meet the moment,” Kate Leone, Chief government relations officer at Feeding America, wrote. “Boosting SNAP benefits will provide families more resources to purchase the food they need through purchases at local grocers and businesses, which will stimulate economies across the country.“With the nation’s public health and economic crises continuing without an end in sight, our economy and families are being pushed to the very brink. We need our government to invest in the hunger-relief measures today because families struggling with hunger need it now.”Feeding America said that Americans can help by volunteering at their local food bank or donating to their local food bank or Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund.
