SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It's not paper or plastic that's taking over a Scottsdale, Arizona recycling center — it's trash. Every day at Republic Services workers line a conveyer belt scouring for items that don't belong. But the belts are moving slower than they used to. That's because so much trash has been moving through, workers need more time to pick it out. "A cushion like this, not recyclable," Richard Coupland with Republic Services said. "Baby seats, not recyclable." But it's not just time-consuming. Coupland said when you put things that don't belong into a recycle bin, it can contaminate the other items that do belong. In return, that produces more trash. "Focus on your fundamental material, but most importantly that it's empty, clean and dry," he said. Fundamental material includes paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. However, if you're recycling a ketchup bottle, it must be completely empty and rinsed out. All the trash coming through the center is also costing more money. Coupland said China was at one time one of the largest buyers of recyclable material. However, the center has stopped shipping items there. "They've lowered their acceptable criteria from 3 percent to .5 percent," Coupland said. "That's a level that few folks are able to achieve right now without making significant changes to their operation." That's forcing the company to sell all it's paper, plastic, and aluminum to different markets, at a cost. "Those markets are not able to pay the same value for the material," Coupland said.In return, that can cost you more when it comes to pick up fees. However, you can help by being conscious about what you put in your bin. "Many don't realize that the bottom of a pizza box which is contaminated with grease of a pizza, that's trash," Coupland said. "No one is interested in buying that. So the proper thing to do is rip the box, give me the top and throw away the bottom."  2052

(AP) — A father and his two children helped rescue a man who was stranded in the Santa Fe National Forest for 14 days.John Utsey launched an unexpected two-day rescue mission Saturday after hearing a call for help while hiking with his kids toward the Santa Fe Baldy.Utsey gave the man food and water before hiking back to the trailhead to call 911.Santa Fe firefighters arrived within the hour, but called off the unsuccessful search after eight hours.Utsey then returned to the spot Sunday, called 911 again and led crews to the man.Once the man was located, the Santa Fe Fire Department says its crews built a fire to bring up his body temperature, which was dangerously low. They also fed and gave him water.The department says the man suffered from chronic back pain, injured his back while hiking and couldn’t stand or walk.The man told first responders that his gear stolen and ended up getting lost and disoriented.The man is now recovering at a local hospital. 992

SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A body was found Wednesday morning near a San Ysidro intersection, police said.Dispatchers received a report of the body around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Smythe Avenue and Sunset Lane, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.No details about the victim were immediately available.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene to take custody of the body for autopsy and identification purposes.Homicide detectives were investigating the circumstances leading up to the death. 542

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — City officials in San Marcos held a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday for a 0-million infrastructure project, designed to mitigate flooding.The project will help manage flooding along the San Marcos Creek using two new bridges and channelize parts of the creek. One bridge will be on Brent Avenue and the other will be on Via Vera Cruz. Both bridges will also include bike and pedestrian paths. (KGTV) - Surveillance video obtained by ABC 10News shows a gas thief in action in Santee.Just before 3 a.m. last Wednesday, at a business park off North Woodside Avenue, the video revealed a masked man up to no good."Just sad seeing someone doing that," said Kevin Wilson.The owner of the vans shown in the video is Kevin Wilson, co-owner of carpet cleaning and repair company, Southwestern Carpet Works. Hours later, he arrived and smelled the aftermath."Pulled up to work and I could immediately smell gas," said Wilson.When he looked at the gas gauge of his box van, his heart sank."Instantly could tell there was less than a quarter tank, and there was a full tank the day before," said Wilson.Here's why. In the video, a man is seen carrying a water jug and some tubing. The man shoves the tube into the gas tank, before puts the tube to his mouth and siphoning the gas.He would get away with about 20 gallons of fuel."Angry and disappointed. He is stealing from a small, family business. If you steal from us, you’re stealing from our kids and our employees' kids," said Wilson.Like most small businesses, his was impacted by COVID-19"For the first month-and-a-half to two months, it was really slow," said Wilson.Fast forward to the end of summer. Wilson believes the gas thief in the video is the same one that hit his business two others times in the past few months."In times past, a little more cautious. He had his back to camera, but dressed in similar clothes and shoes," said Wilson.Wilson says other businesses in the area have also been targeted in the same time period.
