SURPRISE, Ariz. — While hundreds of Valley Vista High School seniors walked across the stage for graduation Thursday, one student wasn't even allowed inside the venue.LaRissa Waln showed up to her graduation ceremony at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, but was stopped at the doorsby her school's vice-principal. Waln was told she'd have to remove her decorated cap, which she had decorated with Native American patterns and trum, and exchange it for a blank one."I was sad for a moment," she said, "But that just means I get to be out here and stand up for what is right."She and her family, some who flew all the way from South Dakota to watch Waln graduate, stood outside the stadium in protest."It's not just for her, we're fighting for all the ones that follow her," Bryan Waln, LaRissa's father said. "There are other Native American kids out here that would love to practice their religion on graduation day." 936

Prosecutors plan to seek a sentence of four to ten months' jail time for actress Felicity Huffman for her role in the college admissions scandal, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said.Huffman was among 13 parents who pleaded guilty last week to a charge of conspiracy to commit fraud. A total of 33 parents, including the "Desperate Housewives" star, have been accused of using their wealth to cheat on standardized tests for their children, and bribe college administrators and coaches who had clout when it came to admissions.Prosecutors' decision to seek four to ten months had nothing to do with Huffman's public apology, the source said.Ultimately, a federal judge will have the final say on Huffman's sentence.Huffman is due back in court on May 21 for a sentencing hearing. What is she accused of?Huffman has agreed to plead guilty to paying ,000 to a fake charity associated with Rick Singer to facilitate cheating for her daughter on the SATs. Singer ran a college prep business, and helped wealthy parents cheat on standardized tests for their children. He also bribed college coaches to designate children falsely as recruited athletes, smoothing their path to admission, a criminal complaint says.Huffman and Singer exchanged emails about how to get extra time on her daughter's SAT, the complaint says. They arranged for Huffman's daughter to take the SAT at a location controlled by an administrator bribed by Singer, the complaint says. The daughter got a score of 1420 out of a maximum 1600 on the SAT, about 400 points over her Preliminary SAT exam a year earlier. 1623

Seven passengers were taken to hospitals when a Hawaiian Airlines flight landed in Honolulu on Thursday morning with smoke in the cabin and cargo hold, officials said. The passengers had "smoke-related symptoms," Hawaiian Airlines said in a statement. The smoke buildup happened because oil was leaking "onto hot parts of the plane's engine and air conditioning pressurization system," according to a statement released by the airline, which blamed the leak on a failed seal.Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Fire Chief Glenn Mitchell described the passengers' injuries as "minor respiratory" in nature. The seven injured were five adults and two children, airline Chief Operating Officer Jon Snook said. The flight from Oakland, California, made its emergency landing around 11:30 a.m. HT. The other 177 passengers and the seven crew members were bused to the terminal. The smoke began filling the cabin 20 minutes before the plane's arrival, he said."We sincerely apologize to our passengers for this incident and thank them for their cooperation in the evacuation," the airline statement said.No oxygen masks were deployed to passengers. Snook said the crew didn't want to pump oxygen into the aircraft when there might be a fire. The crew donned smoke masks, he said. The crew deployed the plane's emergency slides for the evacuation, which officials said took between 30 and 45 seconds.Because halon was used in the cargo hold, it will take some time to get luggage back to the passengers, Snook said. Each passenger will have their flights comped and will get a voucher for a future flight. 1608

Roughly three weeks ago the special counsel's team told Attorney General Bill Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that Robert Mueller would not be reaching a conclusion on obstruction of justice, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The source said that conclusion was "unexpected" and not what Barr had anticipated. The information also means that Barr had a head start on developing his analysis on obstruction of justice well before Mueller delivered his report to the attorney general on Friday. Rosenstein's office has also been heavily involved in overseeing the investigation since its inception. The meeting wasn't about obstruction alone, the source added, and the special counsel's team asked for more time to finish their work, which was granted. The source described it as purely administrative. This story is breaking and will be updated. 883

RAMSEY COUNTY, Minn. – Minnesota has confirmed its first case of the new coronavirus in the state. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) announced Friday that the patient is an adult from Ramsey County who recently traveled on a cruise ship with a known case of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. MDH says the patient began to develop symptoms on Feb. 25, sought health care on Thursday and samples from the person tested positive for the virus Friday. “MDH is awaiting confirmatory testing from CDC, but health officials consider the presumptive results actionable,” wrote the department. The patient is now in quarantine at home and is recovering, according to MDH. Health officials say they’re working with Ramsey County Public Health to identify and contact all those who may have come in contact with the infected person. Those people will be asked to isolate themselves for 14 days from their exposure and will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms.“The State of Minnesota has been working around the clock to prepare for this and I am confident that our Department of Health is up to the challenge,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said. “Our Administration is collaborating across state agencies and remains in close contact with both federal and local partners as we monitor developments with this outbreak. Our state is fortunate to have a strong public health sector and world-class health care providers who are working hard to keep Minnesotans safe and healthy.”This case makes Minnesota the 20th state in the U.S. to report at least one COVID-19 case. As of Friday afternoon, there have been 260 cases of the virus confirmed in the U.S. and 14 deaths, 13 in Washington state and one in California. Worldwide, there’s been more than 100,000 cases confirmed and over 3,400 COVID-19 deaths, with a majority in mainland China, where the virus is believed to have originated. The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread by respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how flu and other respiratory diseases spread, or when people touch surfaces that have been contaminated by an infected person, and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth.Officials say the most important thing you can do to protect yourselves from the virus is to take everyday steps to prevent respiratory illness, including: · Covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or into your sleeve, and then throwing the tissue in the trash.· Washing your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom or before eating. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.· Avoiding touching your face – especially your eyes, nose and mouth ? with unwashed hands.· Staying home if you have cold or flu-like symptoms, and avoid close contact with people who are sick. 2911
