In a state that has had instances of young black men being shot by police while handling a BB gun, one officer in Ohio was thankful he did not pull the trigger on an 11-year-old he spotted carrying a BB gun. According to the Columbus Division of Police, Officer Peter Casuccio was dispatched to a scene on Saturday to a gun run. When he arrived, Casuccio found an 11-year-old carrying a BB gun as he was walking with a 13-year-old companion. At the scene, Casuccio expressed his frustration that he nearly shot the unidentified 11-year-old. The exchange was captured on Casuccio's police-issued body camera. "This is getting kids killed all over the country," Casuccio said.Casuccio explained to the boy that police got a call of a boy matching the 11-year-old's description holding a gun. "I didn't show anybody it,' I was just holding it like this," the boy said."You can't do that," the officer responded. "That thing looks real.""Do you think I want to shoot an 11-year-old? Do you think I want to shoot a 13-year-old? Do I honestly look like the kind of dude who wants to shoot anybody?" Casuccio said. "But do I look like the type of dude who would shoot somebody?"The boys respond, "Yes, sir." Casuccio then explains the incident to the 11-year-old's mother. "I pulled up and I’m not gonna lie, I drew down on them. He freaks out and he starts to pull the gun out of his waistband," the officer told the mother. "He could have shot you for that, you know that?” the mother could be heard saying. "He dropped it real fast, and I didn't know it was a BB gun until hit the sidewalk," Casuccio said. In recent years, Ohio has had several notable instances of police shooting young black men carrying BB guns as officers believed the weapons were real. Some of those incidents have led to protests in those respective communities. On Aug. 5, 2014, 22-year-old John Crawford III was fatally wounded after he was seen inside a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio carrying a BB gun. Officers Sean Williams and David Darkow were not criminally charged in connection to Crawford's death. Three months later in Cleveland, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was seen in a park "pointing a pistol" at people in the park. In the call to police, the witness did state that the weapon was "probably fake." Moments later, Officer Timothy Loehmann fatally wounded Rice. Loehmann was not criminally charged in Rice's death, but was later fired in 2017 after Cleveland Police discovered that he had lied on his job application. The City of Cleveland paid the Rice family a million settlement. In 2016 in Columbus, the same department Casuccio works for, Tyre King, 13, was shot and killed in the back by Officer Bryan Mason after police said King brandished an air gun. Mason was reportedly investigating a robbery at the time of the incident. A grand jury declined to charge Mason criminally for the shooting. There is a pending lawsuit by King's family against the City of Columbus.  3153

If Halloween is your excuse for endlessly indulging in candy (and of course it is), go slow on the black licorice.Just as it does each Halloween, the Food and Drug Administration has posted a reminder on its website urging folks to keep their black licorice consumption to a minimum. The reasoning? Too much of the old-fashioned favorite can cause health problems such as irregular heart rhythm, especially in people over 40.Black licorice contains a sweetening compound called glycyrrhizin, which can cause a drop in potassium levels. With low levels, some people might experience high blood pressure, swelling and even congestive heart failure, the FDA says. The good news is that potassium levels return to normal after you stop eating copious amounts of black licorice. So, here are some tips from the FDA:-- Don't eat too much of the stuff at one go.-- If you have been eating a lot of it, especially if you have irregular heart rhythm or muscle weakness, stop (and call your doctor). 994

Hurricane Hunters have been flying in and out of Hurricane Laura continuously for days, getting a close-up look as the hurricane has rapidly intensified. In less than two days, Laura went from a tropical storm to a high-end Category 4. The storm is set to strike the Louisiana coast early Thursday morning. There are two Air Force Reserve groups that fly into hurricanes to send back data to the National Hurricane Center. In total, the Air Force Reserve utilizes 20 WC-130J aircraft that are equipped with palletized meteorological data-gathering instruments.According to the Hurricane Hunters, “The navigator keeps track of the aircraft's position and movement and monitors radar to avoid tornadic activity. The flight meteorologist acts as flight director and observes and records meteorological data at flight level using a computer that encodes weather data every 30 seconds. The weather reconnaissance loadmaster collects and records vertical meteorological data using a parachute-borne sensor known as a dropsonde. It measures and encodes weather data down to the ocean surface.”The following video was provided by the Hurricane Hunters: 1149

Hundreds of thousands of people braved wet and windy weather to attend Pope Francis' Mass at Phoenix Park in Dublin on Sunday, while thousands more gathered in the city center for protests against clerical sexual abuse amid fresh reports the Pontiff ignored allegations stretching back years."We ask forgiveness for the abuses in Ireland," said Pope Francis at the Mass, listing a litany of abuses including clerical sex crimes, a lack of compassion and action by church leaders and the separation of single mothers and children in industrial laundries."We ask forgiveness for all the times that we, as the church, did not provide survivors of any kind of abuse compassion, to look for justice, and the truth, and concrete actions, so we ask forgiveness," Pope Francis said at the Mass, which was expected to attract over 500,000 people and concludes his two-day visit to Ireland. The visit coincides with the World Meeting of Families, a gathering of the Catholic Church that was thrown into chaos last week by a Pennsylvania grand jury report detailing decades of sexual abuse and cover-ups by clerics. 1111

If you are way into politics, you are not the average American. Not even close.A new poll from the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center reveals how shockingly little people know about even the most basic elements of our government and the Constitution that formed it.Take your pick from this bouillabaisse:* More than one in three people (37%) could not name a single right protected by the First Amendment. THE FIRST AMENDMENT.* Only one in four (26%) can name all three branches of the government. (In 2011, 38% could name all three branches.)* One in three (33%) can't name any branch of government. None. Not even one.* A majority (53%) believe the Constitution affords undocumented immigrants no rights. However, everyone in the US is entitled to due process of law and the right to make their case before the courts, at the least.(And the First Amendment protects the rights to free speech, free exercise of religion, freedom of the press and the rights of people to peaceably assemble, in case you were wondering.)"Protecting the rights guaranteed by the Constitution presupposes that we know what they are," said Annenberg Director Kathleen Hall Jamieson. "The fact that many don't is worrisome."The Annenberg poll is far from the first to reveal not only our collective ignorance about the basic tenets of democracy but also the fact that we are even less informed than we were in the past.Take this Pew Research Center poll from 2010. When asked to name the chief justice of the Supreme Court, less than three in 10 (28%) correctly answered John Roberts. That compares unfavorably to the 43% who rightly named William Rehnquist as the chief justice in a Pew poll back in 1986.What did the 72% of people who didn't name Roberts as the chief justice in 2010 say instead, you ask? A majority (53%) said they didn't know. Eight percent guessed Thurgood Marshall, who was never a chief justice of the Court and, perhaps more importantly, had been dead for 17 years when the poll was taken. Another 4% named Harry Reid, who is not now nor ever was a Supreme Court Justice. What we don't know about the government -- executive, legislative and judicial branches -- is appalling. It's funny -- until you realize that lots and lots of people whose lives are directly affected by what the federal government does and doesn't do have absolutely no idea about even the most basic principles of how this all works. It leads to huge amounts of discontent from the public when they realize that no politician can make good on the various and sundry promises they make on the campaign trail. 2654
