WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke.He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. And the reform as good for the U.S. will be good for China as well," he added.Locke also revealed that during the upcoming 21st session of the JCCT in Washington D.C., the two countries will seek to further "nurture and improve the most highly-scrutinized bilateral economic relationship on Earth.""This is our most important bilateral dialogue or mechanism for resolving trade and investment issues between our two countries," he stressed.The session will be co-chaired by Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will also join the dialogue.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin called for closer financial ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan while meeting with Fredrick Chien, the head of a Taiwan finance delegation here on Thursday.Jia, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that financial cooperation was crucial for the cross-Straits economic bond. BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Thursday with experts of the International Evaluation Committee on National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC)'s Funding and Management Performance.The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of science and technology as well as the supervision and management of scientific funding, said Liu.She said by implementing the National Outline for Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Development and other supporting policies, China was gradually increasing investment in this area and continuing to promote technological innovation.Inviting prestigious international experts to evaluate the performance of scientific funding and management is very significant for the founding of the performance evaluation system as well as the development and improvement of the scientific funding system, she said.Liu said the establishment of the scientific funding system was a successful trial for the reform of China's science and technology system.She praised the positive role played by the NSFC in the past 25 years and hoped the experts would provide objective analysis and evaluation on the NSFC's Funding and Management Performance.She also asked the NSFC and other relevant departments to create favorable conditions for the experts' evaluation work.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) - A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official briefed the non-Communist Party elites about a top-level CPC economic meeting that ended on Sunday.Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, briefed the leaders of the non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, as well as other public figures without party affiliations, on the guiding principles of the three-day Central Economic Work Conference.The CPC pledged to enhance and improve macro-economic regulation to ensure stable and healthy economic development next year at the annual meeting that set out major economic policy targets for 2011.Du also passed on the speeches of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao at the economic meeting to the non-Communist elites.Du said 2011 is the first year of the 12th five-year program and the non-Communist parties should fully recognize its significance.He urged them to study and implement the guiding principles of the economic conference and to actively make political recommendations to ensure a good start of the 12th five-year program.The CPC normally holds such a conference with non-Communist elites after a top-level meeting of its own.
