As the race for president in 2020 continues to heat up, data privacy experts say people should be taking a closer look at laws surrounding your data. "One of the toughest things is that for most of us, being online is no longer an optional thing; it's a mandatory thing," says Jennifer King, director of consumer privacy at The Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School. King tracks consumer privacy issues across the board. "In terms of the data that’s collected about you, it’s a pretty tough scenario," she says. "There is a lot of data collection that happens without our knowledge. Some people argue you consent to it, but because the consent is usually buried in a long terms and conditions and privacy policy, and so you consent, but most of us don’t read documents or be expected to practically.” King says companies like Facebook and Google have so much power over people's information because of a lack of laws and oversight. "We don’t have any laws frankly that restrict data collection or data use mostly across the board,” she explains. "There are particular areas where data collection is protected, so for instance in the health context, but that’s with a medical provider, so the world of Fit Bits and health tracking. [What] people do online, that’s not covered by privacy law.”She says people should care about data privacy, even if they have nothing to hide.“I hear that a lot, ‘I have nothing to hide. I'm not doing anything wrong,’ so it kind of assumes that privacy is about hiding things," she says. "I would argue it's about a lot more just controlling who you are and your ability to do things in the world.”When it comes to election season, King says she'd like to see more people with a better understand of the tech world in Washington. "Certainly, there is not enough. So, there is a real need for technological expertise in Congress,” she says. “That doesn’t necessarily mean elected officials. I would not expect most elected officials to come out of software companies. I would actually argue we’d be better off if we didn’t have our elected officials coming out of Silicon Valley, for example.”King hopes there will be more “reasonable protections” for consumers in the next few years. "There is only so much you can do as an individual, and that’s why it’s important to say that to pressure elected representatives to say that you want real data laws," she says. 2421

At a White House briefing on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said that the government will have 1.5 million coronavirus tests ready to distribute this week after bipartisan criticism was levied on the government's ability to distribute tests. Pence added that tests are available in all 50 states, giving doctors the ability to better determine whether patients have been sickened with coronavirus. These tests will go to hospitals and labs at state universities. The eventual goal is to make the tests accessible more broadly. "Our objective is to make tests available broadly to the American public," Pence said. "We want to make sure the American people can go to their doctor, can go to the local MedCheck or CVS, and obtain access to coronavirus (tests)."On Tuesday, members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee expressed frustration with the distribution of tests. "I'm sure across the nation are really scared," Sen. Patty Murray said at Tuesday's hearing. "I'm hearing from people who are sick who want to get tested, are not being told where to go. I'm hearing that even when people do get tested and it's very few so far, the results are taking way longer to get back to them. "The administration has had months to prepare for this and it is unacceptable that people in my state and nationwide can't even get an answer as to whether or not they are infected."The announcement comes as the death toll nationwide is up to 11 from coronavirus. It also comes as United Airlines announced that it is cutting back the number of domestic and international flights. Administration officials said that elderly and those with pre-existing conditions should reconsider elective travel. BOULDER, Colo. — Employees at the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management facility have seen quite a few changes over the years.The facility acts as a collection for the hazardous materials people use in their households. The center collects, separates and then safely disposes of chemicals, batteries and other items that are too dangerous to simply throw away.“Cleaning products, garden products, pool and spa chemicals, things like that,” program manager Shelly Fuller said.The list of items the facility accepts is quite long.“Latex paint, any cleaning products from your home, fluorescent lightbulbs — a lot of times you’ll have the four-footers or even the curly cues that are CFLs, so they all contain mercury,” Fuller said. "Pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, fungicides, oil and antifreeze.”Fuller has been working at the facility for about six years and has been working with hazardous waste management for about 10 years.She said she’s seen some interesting items pass through the facility over the years.“We had some breast implants come in because of the silicon and formaldehyde they were in. We had snakes that someone had picked up off of the side of the road and wanted to keep as a specimen. Last year we got a jar of teeth,” Fuller said.Lately, though, employees at the facility have been dealing with a new challenge — vape products have been coming in by the pound.“In the last couple months, we’ve received about five pounds of e-liquid. BRIDGETON, N.J. – Authorities have released a sketch of a man they want to speak with in the case of a 5-year-old girl who went missing from a New Jersey park. The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office says the girl, Dulce Maria Alavez, disappeared from the Bridgeton City Park Recreational Area at about 5 p.m. on Sept. 16. The sketch that prosecutors released Tuesday is of a person who has been reported to have been seen in the park around the time Dulce went missing. A witness who recently came forward says the person was with one or two children under the age of 5 years old. The person was reported to have been wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and a white baseball style hat at the time. The man is reported to be Hispanic, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a slender build, and between 30 and 35 years old. Prosecutors want to clarify that the sketch is not from the child witness who gave authorities an initial description which led to an Amber Alert on Sept. 17. “We are asking this person (or anyone who may recognize him) to come forward as investigators wish to speak with him as it is believed that he may have information that is helpful in determining the circumstances that led to Dulce’s disappearance,” prosecutors wrote.Anyone who can identify this individual or who has information about the case is asked to contact Bridgeton Police Department at 856-451-0033.
