Three weeks into the 2019 racing season, both attendance and overall betting handle are down at Del Mar. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says attendance is down about 5 percent, and handle is down 14 percent compared to 2018. Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper says the issues surrounding the 30 horse deaths at Santa Anita have turned off some fans. "We've got to prove to our racing fans that we're doing the safest things we can to keep these horses healthy," he said. So far, three horses have died at Del Mar this season, all during training (two died in a freak accident when they collided head on before the second day of racing). Harper says the track has increased safety protocols that have been helping keep horses safe. "There's vets out there every morning keeping an eye on," he said. "They see a horse that maybe doesn't look that good, isn't warming up enough to where he'd be safe, we get him off the racetrack."Harper says the attendance and betting handle are on track with estimates. He says he hopes to see them both go back up over time. Through three weeks - 15 days of racing - the track is averaging about 13,089 fans per day. 1156

There are more than 50 deaths per year in the U.S. that happen during police encounters with people carrying toy firearms.In an effort to prevent it from happening in Sioux City, Iowa, city council members there have voted to adopt an ordinance that bans some toy guns from being carried.The Associated Press reports Police Captain Mark Kirkpatrick said officers have had multiple encounters with replica weapons. They are faced with the question of whether to use deadly force in those situations.The toy weapons ban in Sioux City includes pellet and BB guns. The ban does not cover Nerf or squirt guns, or guns that shoot suction-cup darts, the AP reports. 676

There is nothing like the sound of a baby's cry and for a new mom like Whitney Eberhardt, it can be daunting.“When you first come home from the hospital you have no idea what you are doing and when they are crying you sometimes have no idea why. So, it’s nice to have something to help you out,” said Eberhardt.On average, doctors say a newborn can cry a total of 2 hours a day, and that’s why Dr. Ariana Anderson of UCLA created the app, Chatter Baby.“I thought it would be good to make a device that would help new parents and possibly deaf parents. So, when they were around their baby crying and said, why is my baby crying they would have some sort of answer,” said Dr. Anderson.Chatter Baby is in its infancy stage and currently only gives three reasons for your baby crying. The three reasons are when a baby's in pain, fussy or hungry.Eberhardt tried out the app and said it is easy to use. You press record for five seconds as your baby is crying and the app will then compare the cry to the sounds in a database to determine a reason. The Chatter Baby database of cries was created with the help of new parents.“We think the best judges of the baby are parents themselves. We had the parent initially label the cry. So a mother would say, my baby is hungry, so if two other mothers agreed with that description of the babies cry then we would include that cry in our data base,” said Dr. Anderson.Certain cries have a different acoustic sound. For example, babies who are in pain might have a cry with high energy or a fussy cry may have more periods of silence.“Once we had an agreement amongst the mothers we trained artificial intelligence algorithms to look for patterns in the cry that were specific to hunger to pain to fussiness,” said Dr. Anderson.With the help of artificial intelligence, Chatter Baby’s algorithm claims 90% accuracy whether your baby is crying or not and correctly flags more than 90% of pain cries.However, as you get more comfortable knowing why your baby is crying, you can tweak the app yourself to make it more accurate.“We want to have a way for parents to revise, update and improve the algorithym.so the algorithm gets returned to their specific baby,” said Dr. Anderson.Eberhardt said the app is a great safety net for all new parents.  2315

This year’s first rehabilitated eagle is released back into the wild Monday, at Pioneer Trails Recreation Area, just north of Aurora, Colorado.She was originally found near this park March 2, with no apparent injury, but she wasn't flying.“We tested her and she had a lead level of 18.3,” said Betsy Finch, manager of Raptor Rehabilitation. “And that is micrograms per deciliter. Anything above 10 toxic.”Bald eagles are getting sick and dying from lead poisoning after eating the carcasses of animals shot with lead bullets. The Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery Center typically sees 20 eagles a year, it’s already hit that number this year; only two have survived.For the past seven weeks, Finch, has nursed the eagle released Monday back to health, treating her for lead poisoning, as she has done with many other eagles.“This is a real eagle celebration today,” Denise Lewis, Director of Raptor Recovery said. “This is what it’s all about.”Before her big moment, she is banded and photographed.It's bittersweet. Finch invests a lot of time nursing these birds back to health. But she insists, she isn't sad to see her go.“Not really,” Finch said. “They don't belong with us.”Out in the wild, she'll go right back to hunting, and soaring free.“If she has a mate out there she will find that mate,” Finch said.And she said it's not too late for her to breed yet this season.If you find an injured raptor, such as an eagle or an owl, call the Raptor Recovery Rescue Hotline at 1866-888-7261. 1531
