An American woman and a Japanese man won the elite divisions in the Boston Marathon Monday, the first time runners from each country have taken the top spots in more than 30 years.Desiree (Desi) Linden, a two-time Olympian, battled the rain and wind to win the 122nd running of the storied race. An American Christian missionary is thought to have been killed by tribespeople from one of the world's most isolated communities on a remote island hundreds of miles off the coast of India, according to officials.The 27-year-old American, identified as John Allen Chau, came to India on a tourist visa but came to the Andaman and Nicobar islands in October with the express purpose of proselytizing, Dependra Pathak, Director General of Police of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, told CNN."We refuse to call him a tourist. Yes, he came on a tourist visa but he came with a specific purpose to preach on a prohibited island," Pathak said.Chau did not inform the police of his intentions to travel to the island to attempt to convert its inhabitants.The island, North Sentinel Island, is inhabited by the Sentinelese people, who are protected under Indian law. Activists say these team nicknames play up harmful racial stereotypes."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read. "Often citing a long held myth by non-Native people that 'Indian' mascots 'honor Native people,' American sports businesses such as the NFL’s Washington 'Redsk*ns' and Kansas City 'Chiefs,' MLB’s Cleveland 'Indians' and Atlanta 'Braves,' and the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks, continue to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place."Each of these professional sports businesses attempt to establish a story of honoring Native peoples through the names or mascots; however, each one—be it through logos or traditions (e.g., fight songs, mascots, human impersonators, and fan culture)—diminishes the place, status, and humanity of contemporary Native citizens. What is true about many of the brand origin stories is that team owners during the birth of these brands hoped to gain financially from mocking Native identity. An Arizona family is desperate for answers after their car was torched in their driveway. Laura Castaneda says she ran outside and grabbed her hose after seeing the flames. While on the way back to her car, the hose broke.In a panic, Castaneda ran to her neighbor's yard and grabbed their hose. The flames, less than 6-feet from her house, were right outside of her daughter’s bedroom window.“I was just praying, ‘I go, God, just help me through this — get me through this; keep everyone safe,’” Castaneda explained.When the fire department finally arrived, Castaneda says she broke down. “That’s kind of when I broke down,” she said. “I thought, ‘This is our only vehicle. My husband just got a new job. I’ve got seven kids — what am I gonna do?’Castaneda says they’re desperate to get a new car. Now police are looking for the person her set her car on fire. An Australian energy company is giving hundreds of female employees a raise to make sure they get paid the same amount as their male counterparts.It's "not right or fair to expect women to have to wait any longer for the pay gap to close -- so, we're fixing that right now," said Catherine Tanna, managing director of Energy Australia, said in a statement announcing the move.Around 350 women at the electricity and gas supplier will receive a one-off adjustment to their salaries, with an average increase of about 3,500 Australian dollars (,740), according to the company.
