URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Users can even get exposure notifications if they’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive.“If someone tests positive then same day that person is isolated,” said Burke. “Which we think is critical for ultimately the efficacy of the testing program.”They’ve published a pre-print paper on their COVID-19 saliva test, which is undergoing peer review and are seeking FDA approval.For students like Alliyah, it’s one-stop piece of mind.“It makes you feel like I'm safer on campus because even though we only have to get tested twice a week you can get tested every day the testing site is open if you wanted to.” 2653

(KGTV) - An unscheduled Veterans Day tribute played out at a cemetery in the North County.More than a week ago, local florist Jenelle Brinneman learned Valley Center's annual Veterans Day program had been canceled by COVID-19, including a ceremony at Valley Center Cemetery.She started raising money online and during her flower deliveries. In the end, she raised enough to place roses at the graves of hundreds of veterans."We have over 300 veterans that laid to rest here and we just wanted to make sure they are remembered," said Brinneman.Donors could nominate veterans for rose bouquets. One of those donors was the family of Robert Cronin, an Army veteran who fought in World War II in France and Germany. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 83."It means a lot to me to have him honored because he was a special part of our lives," said granddaughter Francesca Pappagallo.She says Cronin earned numerous medals, including the Legion of Merit for inventing a slide rule tool to increase the accuracy of cannons. Loved ones thought his rank was 'Colonel,' but after he passed away, a different truth emerged."They did a lot of research and he was actually a retired one-star General. Two dogs are safe after running onto a Phoenix freeway and disrupting traffic on Wednesday. Video from Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix showed two dogs running onto Interstate 17 near Deer Valley Road. The Arizona Department of Public Safety tried to catch the dogs, but they refused to stop. DPS stopped traffic for a brief time while troopers and Phoenix firefighters attempted to stop the dogs. Officials were able to grab one dog on I-17, but the other dog ran from DPS and away from the freeway into an RV park.Residents at the RV park were able to capture the second dog after almost an hour of running free. KNXV caught up with the dog and the owner: DOG CHASE: DPS following dogs on I-17/Deer Valley in Phoenix. TUCSON, Arizona — Ballot counting continues across Arizona Friday in a Senate race separated by only a few thousand votes, and less than one percent.With hundreds of thousands of ballots left to be counted, it may be days before Arizonans know whether Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema won the race to replace Jeff Flake in the upper chamber of Congress.But there's one not-unlikely scenario in which Arizonans may be represented by both Congresswomen in the Senate.After John McCain's passing in August, the responsibility fell to Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey to appoint an interim replacement for the beloved senator in Washington. Ducey made a safe choice in former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, who retired from office in 2013. Kyl, however, only committed to serve in the role until early January, after which Ducey will once again have to choose a replacement until Arizonans make their choice to fill the seat in a 2020 special election.So who are the potential candidates? There was speculation over the summer that Ducey might appoint his own chief of staff to the role or even Cindy McCain -- the Arizona senator's widow. But should Sinema eek out a win after ballot counting is completed, McSally will be out of a job, having vacated her seat in Congress to campaign.If Ducey decides to appoint McSally, that could leave both candidates serving in the Senate until at least 2020. After that, the Republican appointee will have to decide whether or not to run in the special election.Ducey has left no indication so far about his intentions for the appointment, but McSally's name certainly isn't out of the picture. 1691

VALLEY CENTER (KGTV)- A former North County school security guard was sentenced Thursday after he was found guilty of sending inappropriate pictures to children online. Steven Lloyd Duncan was arrested by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in December 2018. Six months later he was sentenced to four years in state prison. Duncan was found guilty of four different charges related to child pornography. According to investigators, Duncan used social media platforms like Instagram to communicate with girls ranging in age of 10 to 14 years old. Investigators say he sent photos to underage children and received photos from children. During the investigation, 600 images and 350 videos of child pornography were found on Duncan’s phone and commuter. Duncan was a security guard at Valley Center High School for 11 years but the investigation shows the acts happened after his time working for the district. 928
