The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, a rare and deadly disease, on Tuesday, the World Health Organization reported. The declaration came after laboratory results confirmed two cases of the disease in the province of Bikoro."Our top priority is to get to Bikoro to work alongside the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and partners to reduce the loss of life and suffering related to this new Ebola virus disease outbreak," said Dr Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director-General, Emergency Preparedness and Response. The name change for Boy Scouts of America is creating a buzz online as people react the organization's recent move to become more inclusive.They will begin calling the program for ages 11 to 17 "Scouts BSA."It was a historic decision for Boy Scouts of America as they take the next step towards allowing females into all their programs with their focus on bringing families together in one spot. It's all a part of the new "Scout Me In"?recruitment campaign, uniting girls and boys of the same family with one organization."Having Johnny in Scouts and Sally in soccer or some other activities — if they can go and do things together as a family unit, that's what families are looking for from the research we have," says Chris Mehaffey, scout executive and CEO of the Mid-America Council. And so the move was made today, switching the Boy Scouts program to Scouts BSA with the hopes that the new name will make girls feel comfortable joining the program geared towards 11-18 year olds.Still Mehaffey believes the name switch won't make a huge difference in girls joining the scouts. "I think those that are interested in our program will come anyway, this just shows that we are being more inclusive to what demographics we'll be serving."As for the Girl Scouts, they're remaining focused on creating programs for girls, and only girls. "So it's not changing the way we deliver our mission and programs. We're going to continue to do what girls asked us to do and provide for their changing needs," says Melissa Breazile, marketing director of Girl Scouts of Nebraska.And if girls desire, Mehaffey says girls can choose to join both organizations. "You don't have to choose. The police chief in Columbia, S.C. announced on Thursday that Master Police Officer David Hurt has been suspended for five days without pay and removed from the K-9 unit after the dog he was handling, Turbo, died after Hurt left Turbo in a police car for eight hours, The State newspaper reported. Hurt was participating in all-day training and left the air conditioning running and the windows down in his police car. He also reportedly had deactivated a heat sensor in the vehicle, which could have warned him to the car's rising temperatures. Hurt reportedly had an officer check on Turbo at 11:30 a.m. on July 26, which was four hours into the training. When Hurt returned to the vehicle at 3:30 p.m., he found Turbo was panting heavily, foaming at the mouth and unsteady on his feet, The State reported. Hurt then took Turbo to a veterinarian, where the 2-year-old dog was euthanized. Turbo's official cause of death was organ failure from prolonged heat exposure. In addition to his unpaid suspension and removal from the K-9 unit, Hurt will also be removed from the Columbia Police's bomb squad for six months. Last month's incident has also prompted the Columbia Police to make institutional changes to how it cares for K-9s. Election 2020 is technically almost over.According to the American Psychological Association’s latest survey, nearly 70% of adults said the election is a significant source of stress.Compare that to the 2016 election, when 52% of adults said they were that stressed.And voters aren’t just stressed about their candidate winning or losing—there’s also so much confusion about filling out your ballot correctly or possible unrest after the results.Dr. Francoise Adan is a psychiatrist at University Hospitals Connor Integrative Health Network. She said election anxiety is especially tough right now because it’s coupled with pandemic stress, racial unrest, and personal losses in 2020.Mental health experts are preparing for an influx of calls in the days after the election, just as they did in 2016.“I saw a lot of people who were disappointed and sad and angry,” Adan said. “And of course, we also saw a lot of people who rejoiced and celebrated—but those are not the people who are going to ask for help.”Adan said feelings of sadness, disappointment, grief, fear and even mourning if your candidate loses are normal.But for some people, those feelings are going to be really profound and interfere with daily activities—and that’s when Adan said it’s important to seek professional help for your mental health.For others, Adan said, self-care is key—yes, you’ve heard that over and over again, but that’s because it works.“And you need to find the one that works for you. It could be exercising, meditation, breathing techniques. Gratitude is one of my favorites,” she said.The doctor also recommends a heavy dose of compassion, no matter the results.“Not only compassion for others and understanding that yes, some people are winners and some people are going to lose—but at the end of the day, we are all in this together.
