SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person is dead after being struck by an Amtrak train near the Sorrento Valley train station Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.Amtrak has called this a "trespasser incident." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating an altercation at a University Heights apartment complex that left a man dead early Thursday morning.The incident was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at an apartment building on Howard Avenue near Mississippi Street, according to San Diego police.Police said someone reported two men fighting, but when officers arrived both men were injured.The two men were taken to the hospital, but one of them died from apparent stab wounds, police told ABC 10Ne 502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. Peeps are gluten-free and fat-free.Since their inception Peeps have crossed over into other holidays as well, now available in a variety of shapes for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the summer season.Peeps were first created in 1953 by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes, according to Just Born. The process was eventually simplified and brought the production time of the treat from 27 hours down to 6 minutes.As far as the company is concerned, they hope their product retains its freshness year-round. Among their "frequently asked questions" on their website, Just Born says "storing unwrapped marshmallow in a warm, dry place generally results in prematurely stale product."The time it takes to destroy the sugary treat, however, remains up to consumers. 1791

The San Diego Padres have made it official.The team announced Thursday they have official signed all-star free agent Manny Machado to a 10-year, 0 million deal through the 2028 season, with an opt-out after the 2023 season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than a dozen migrants were apprehended after 150 migrants tried to climb the border fence in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The incident happened New Year’s Eve at an unspecified time. According to the agency, 45 migrants turned back due to CBP’s increased presence at the border before another group of migrants started throwing rocks at agents. Border Patrol agents added that the group tried to lift toddler-sized children over the concertina wire, but agents were unable to help the children because too many rocks were being thrown. Agents used pepper spray upwind and tear gas of the migrants to try and deter them from throwing rocks. CBP says the measures weren’t aimed at the migrants and “successfully suppressed the rock throwers causing them to flee the area.”Most of the migrants returned to Mexico through a hole under the fence and by climbing back over the fence. A total of 25 migrants were apprehended. Under CHP’s use of force policy, the incident is being reviewed. The incident comes on the heels of another recent event at the border in which hundreds of migrants tried to rush the border, forcing the hours-long closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
