JINGGANGSHAN, Jiangxi Province, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the eastern province of Jiangxi on Saturday and Sunday, calling on revolutionary veterans and model workers ahead of the Lunar New Year, China's most important holiday for family gatherings. It was the sixth year in a row that the president spent the holiday outside Beijing with ordinary citizens.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited veterans who had served in the Red Army and people in the city of Jinggangshan. BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The pursuit of harmony is a basic value and the fundamental spirit of Chinese culture, State Councilor Liu Yandong told representatives of the 2008 Beijing Forum on Friday.     More than 300 scholars from more than 40 countries participated in the forum, with the theme "The Harmony of Civilization and Prosperity for All-The Universal Value and the Development Trend of Civilization."     Liu congratulated the forum, saying its theme was highly significant.     She said the concept of harmony had become a key criterion in many types of relations: among peoples, between individuals and society, among nationalities and states, among cultures and between humans and nature.     "It is especially important for academic and educational institutions to promote multinational cultural communication under globalization," said Liu.     Co-sponsored by Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, the Beijing Forum 2008 -- the fifth such annual meeting -- convened on Nov. 7. The forum will focus on the environment, the Olympic spirit and the global financial crisis.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese netizens have made their voices heard more loudly and their presence better recognized in headline news events over the past year.     When the Beijing Olympic torch relay overseas was disrupted in April, almost all the Chinese msn messenger users posted "I love China" beside their names, a move that looked "overwhelming" to Kevin, a French man who was living in Shanghai at the time.     As to domestic affairs, netizens did not sit aloof. After the dairy scandal emerged in September, netizens' strong criticisms finally led to the resignation of Li Changjiang, then director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     Yan Jirong, professor at Peking University's School of Government, said this incident showed the government was paying attention to public voices on the Internet.     A report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Dec. 2 showed about 206 million Chinese use the Internet as their main source of news.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under-30s are the majority of online news readers, accounting for about 69 percent of total Internet users.     On June 20, Hu visited the Qiangguo Forum, which is affiliated to people.com.cn, and chatted with netizens. His blog was picked for pointing out the keyto China's new medical reform plan which is likely to be issued in January, reported the People's Daily.     Liao wrote on Dec. 25 that China should learn from other countries, such as Cuba, in drafting the long-delayed medical reform plan.     "The government is seeking new ways for the public to voice opinions," said Yan.     A survey taken by the China Youth Daily's poll center showed about 72 percent of those responding hoped the Internet would be anew path to democracy. More than half of those surveyed said the exchanges on the Internet helped to bring the government closer to the public.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory message to a UN meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to be held Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.     Wen extended warm congratulations to the opening of the meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on behalf of the Chinese government.     The Palestinian issue is the core of the Mideast problem. China staunchly supports the restoration of the legal rights of the Palestinian people as well as the Mideast peace process, the message said.     China hopes that Palestine and Israel would stick to the path of peaceful negotiations on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "Land for Peace" principle to establish an independent Palestinian state at an early date, so as to realize peaceful coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian states, it said.     To resolve the Palestinian issue at an early date is the aspiration of the people in the Mideast as well as the common expectation of the international community, it said.     As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to support the United Nations in playing an important role in solving the Mideast problem and pushing forward the settlement of the Palestinian issue, said the message.     The Chinese government will also work with the international community to make unremitting contributions to peace, stability and development in the Mideast, it added.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged to implement the responsibility system which was designed 10 years ago for the building of a clean government and improvement of the Communist Party of China's (CPC) work style.     In his instructions for a teleconference held here on Monday to mark the tenth anniversary of the issuance of the responsibility system by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, Hu, also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said the responsibility system is fundamental for further pushing forward the building of a clean government, improvement of the Party's work style and the anti-corruption drive.     Hu said that the Party committees and governments at all levels had made remarkable achievements in improving the Party's work style, building a clean government and the anti-corruption drive in the past 10 years, but must be aware of the problems still existing.     He urged Party committees and governments of all levels to study and implement the essence of the 17th Party Congress and make strenuous efforts to gear up the improvement of the Party's work style, the building of a clean government and the anti-corruption drive.     Hu called for seriously carrying out the responsibility system, making substantial efforts to push forward the building of a mechanism for punishing and preventing corruption, further enhancing the ability of resolving the outstanding problems in improving the Party's work style and building a clean government so as to provide a favorable political guarantee for promoting scientific development and social harmony.     In addition to studying Hu's instructions, the participants in the teleconference also shared their experiences on the anti-corruption drive over the past 10 years.     Addressing the teleconference, He Guoqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and Secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, talked about how to implement the responsibility system by strengthening supervision and check on the implementation of the Party lines and policies so as to ensure the smooth implementation of Party's orders.
