Florida Gov. Ron Desantis signed a bill into law Wednesday requiring school districts and charter schools to increase the minimum base salary for full-time classroom teachers to at least ,500.Previously, Florida was ranked 26th in the country for beginning teacher pay. Now, it's among the top five, DeSantis said."I think its definitely going to keep a lot of teachers in the profession and also motivates new ones to come into it," said Garrett Kent, a seventh-grade math teacher at Oak Hammock K-8 School in Port St. Lucie.Kent said the state's new benchmark for teacher pay is a dream come true."It's life-changing," said Kent. "I mean, most teachers don't join for the money, but this just adds to the motivation to help educate the students."State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, whose district covers Martin and St. Lucie counties, was one of several authors of the bill.He said the money is now in place for school districts to negotiate with teacher's unions."The reality is that this is laid out, not only as a benchmark, ,500, but also, it's great recognition and allowing those individual school districts to make a choice with their teachers as to what kind of raises they're going to be getting," said Overdorf.Overdorf said districts that already have a starting pay higher than ,500 will also likely see an increase and that the state of Florida is now in an excellent position to bring the best teachers back."Some of the best and brightest have gone to teach elsewhere because, frankly, they weren't able to get that living salary that recognizes the job that they do," said Overdorf. "Florida has now laid that down. We're going to be able to do that, and we're laying out those opportunities."Kent agreed."This will definitely change a lot of lives, especially the ones that are coming in," said Kent. Frankie Kipp started the Blackfeet Nation Boxing Club in 2003 for a simple reason. He wanted to teach vulnerable people on the reservation, especially women and young girls, to defend themselves.After years of working as a probation officer, he was tired of bearing witness to tragedy after tragedy. Kipp was a successful amateur boxer in his youth and connected the two sides of his life with the club. Next week, Kipp’s life work and his pupils will be recognized on the big screen. The club will be featured in a documentary called “Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible”, set to air Tuesday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.“I started seeing girls getting bullied,” Kipp said from his home in Browning, Montana. “And several in their 20s wanted to learn how to take up for themselves because they were getting abused. We start hearing about young ladies getting taken from Indian country. And so I started training my daughter and I told her if something happens, at least you're going to know how to fight for your life.”Over the past 20 years, Kipp has trained more than 500 boxers on the reservation, and he’s seen positive effects in his charges and in the community.“Some of the girls that come into the boxing club have really low self-esteem. And the confidence they get from boxing is just phenomenal,” Kipp said. “But I don’t train bullies. I tell all the boxers to go to authority figures first if someone is threatening them. But let them know that you box for Blackfeet Nation and that you won’t let anyone hit you. You will fight back.”“It was emotional a sense that, I was a probation officer prior and I put a lot of things upstairs in my head, unpleasant things,” Kipp said. “I had to talk several people out of suicide, kids as young as 8 years old wanted to kill themselves. The documentary had brought a lot of memories back up. There were a few that were real unpleasant that made me break down during the interview.”‘Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible’, directed by Kristen Lappas and Tom Rinaldi, is a film about fighting — for respect, identity and acknowledgment.The documentary, which has already screened at several film festivals, paints the gym against the backdrop of stories like that of Ashley Loring-Heavyrunner and several other Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Kipp hopes the large audience will help spread awareness to the silent epidemic.“I think it would raise awareness, not just on our reservation but most of the Indian nations. This is what's happening, people are coming up missing,” Kipp said. “We have unsolved murders. It’s crazy some of the things that we see. I do think that it's going to bring up some awareness with that.”There are no scorecards or knockouts for many of the boxers on the Blackfeet Reservation. Fierce winds and lightening strikes created by a powerful dust storm have killed around 100 people in northwestern India since late Wednesday, according to local authorities.In the state of Rajasthan, at least 31 people died and around 120 people were injured after winds downed more than 8,000 electricity poles and uprooted hundreds of trees, Jaipur District Divisional Commissioner T Ravi Kant told CNN."This has resulted in widespread electricity cuts and water shortages. Most of the deaths occurred after walls and roofs of houses collapsed in the middle of the night," he said.In neighboring Uttar Pradesh, the death toll stood at at least 64, with the vast majority of those deaths occurring in the city of Agra, where so far 43 have been confirmed dead.According to Sanjay Kumar, the relief commissioner at the Uttar Pradesh state disaster management authority, the high casualty number is the result of people becoming trapped under falling debris. The Department of Labor’s latest reports shows 1.4 million people filed new jobless claims, compared to 1.3 million people the week prior.“People are overwhelmed by the news. It is competitive but--as Johnston teaches in a course with LinkedIn-- if you search in the “hidden job market,” you’ll find better success.“The hidden job market is all the jobs that are unadvertised online,” said Johnston.These jobs may be unadvertised because an employer may be planning a promotion or expanding but hasn’t announced that yet. If you can get to know the hiring manager before new jobs post, you have a better chance of topping their list of candidates.“Tip number one is to understand what your options are.
