The body of a New Jersey man, whose body was recovered 1,500 feet underwater in California, is considered to be the deepest recovery ever performed in the United States and Canada, officials say.According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, 29-year-old Ryan Normoyle rented a boat on Lake Tahoe on Aug. 10.That evening, Ryan's rental boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada, but Normoyle wasn't on it.On the boat, the department said they found Normoyle's phone, which recorded Ryan jumping off the boat into the lake. The video also showed the boat drifting away, which the department said was because Ryan had left in gear. The New York Times reported that the camera captured Normoyle trying to swim to the boat for about two minutes before disappearing from the frame. With the help of GPS data captured from Ryan's phone while recorded, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the Washoe County Marine Unit, and the University of California Davis Research Team helped in the search. On Sept. 23, the nonprofit Bruce's Legacy, which specializes in underwater recovery, was called in by Ryan's family to aid in the investigation. In a blog post, Bruce's Legacy founder Keith Cormican detailed how winds chased them off the lake around noon, and on the second day, they ran into electrical issues. Not wanting to give up, Cormican used sonar on the ROV after losing power to it.After a few hours, a body image, which was identified as Ryan's, showed up on the sonar at 1,551 feet. Unfortunately, they lost hold of him and weren't able to bring him to the surface, but on Sept. 27, they found Ryan at 1,565 feet, and after two hours, the crew pulled up Normoyle's body, by hand, to the surface.According to the police department, Cormican said this was the deepest recorded recovery in the United States and Canada. Previously, the deepest recovery in Lake Tahoe was in 2018 at a depth of 1,062 feet. 1944

The Asian giant hornet first made waves this spring when it appeared in the United States. Discovered in Washington State, some dubbed it the murder hornet, but since then, entomologists have been feverishly trying to eradicate it."Quite a bit has happened. First, we had an initial planning with our AFS counterparts and also our counterparts in Canada who are having detections of their own. We formulated one or two different plans and put one or two of them into action," says Sven-Erik Spichiger, the Managing Entomologist at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The Asian giant hornet is the world's largest hornet. It's more than two inches long, and queens can be even bigger. They feed on honey bees, attacking and killing tens of thousands of them at a time.Last November, beekeeper Ted McFall was blown away when he discovered one of his strongest hives had been attacked."Every time I go and check my hives, I kind of have a bad feeling when I start thinking about the Asian giant hornets that are somewhat establishing nests in the woods around me because I think to myself, 'Which one of these colonies is going to get it? Next time I come out here, am I going to show up and there's going to be bee heads everywhere and just bee carnage everywhere?' It's a very unsettling feeling," says McFall. The Asian giant hornet has been spotted and caught near McFall's property. Spichiger says the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the surrounding community have been hard at work setting traps."We have an excellent public survey going on with over 1,000 traps established by just members of the general public. This is very heartwarming to me because it means everyone is taking it very seriously and going above and beyond to help us look for new detections of this invasive pest," says Spichiger.Spichiger says so far, one has been discovered just over the Canadian border and three in Whatcom County in Washington State. Two of those discovered were queens, which is crucial since the Asian giant hornet hive can't survive without its queen. There have also been two cases where people were likely stung by an Asian giant hornet."She described being stung as having hot tacks driven into her flesh... What she described seeing in the yard earlier that day sounded like an Asian giant hornet. Again, it's an unconfirmed report, but we believe it happened," says Spichiger."Beekeepers have all types of bee equipment and protection against bees but this is totally useless against the Asian giant hornet. The Asian giant hornet can poke his stinger right through here. Even if I wore two of them," says McFall. As for whether Washington State agriculture officials feel they're closer to eradicating the Asian giant hornet, Spichiger says: "Eradication is going to be a long process. We will only know for sure if we’ve been successful if we have three years of all negative surveys and nobody turns any in. So from a realistic sense, no, I’m three years away."Still, the capture of the Asian giant hornets, including the two queens, is progress.McFall has 16 traps set up within a mile of his hives. He's on high alert, hoping none of his honey bees get attacked again."This is a [container] with orange juice and rice wine. They'll smell it and go through the hole. That hole is a little bit narrower than 3/4 inch and then they'll go in and not find their way out. They'll try and fly out and not be able to get out," says McFall. The traps are the same used by entomologists at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Entomologists will be setting another 40 live traps near the most recent sighting. They're hoping to catch a live Asian giant hornet and tag it so they can track it to their nest. 3747

Tesla says Tuesday it wants to raise up to billion in capital through a stock offering. The move came the same day that CEO Elon Musk said he has moved from California to Texas. The stock offering is the second for the company in three months. In September Tesla said that it planned to sell up to billion worth of common shares just one day after its 5-for-1 stock split took effect.According to the Associated Press, 10 different brokerage houses will sell the stock offerings, and each will get up to a 0.25% commission. Musk told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that he has switched states, saying that California is complacent with innovators and has taken them for granted.According to the AP, earlier this year, Musk threatened to relocate Tesla’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters and future manufacturing to Texas over a spate with county officials on whether Tesla’s San Francisco Bay Area factory should stay closed due to coronavirus restrictions.Next year, Tesla is scheduled to roll out its new “Cybertruck” pickup and a semi. 1064

TAMPA, Fla. — Many parents are opting to keep their kids home to give distance learning a try amid the pandemic. With many districts pushing back the first day of school, you got time to get in line."Now that we have time to plan it’s a beautiful thing," Anne Flenner with Florida Virtual School said. She recommends parents making a dedicated space for your child. It can be a desk, the kitchen table, or an empty guest room. You also want to get them involved in making the space functional."Whether that’s adding some posters that inspire them or whether it’s just getting color-coded notebooks that they’re going to use," Flenner said. "That actually can bring some excitement for them for this new school year when it’s a really hard time for them."Once you got that figured out, it is time to set up what Flenner calls a “pace chart.” It’s basically the agenda your kid is familiar with, but for you too. Some parents put it on a big whiteboard or just a piece of paper attached to the fridge."Parents can really do that important part of organizing them so that they can really focus on their job which is to learn the content," Flenner said. She also suggests after getting access to the virtual learning platform, go in and click on everything. Then, organize different binders or folders for each course. If your kids are sharing devices with each other or you, make a folder on the desktop for their own work. Or buy each child their own flash drive."The biggest help that will get you in gear for virtual learning… is to throw out what you know about the traditional school day. We call it chunking their time together," Flenner said. "Most students will work three to four hours like on one course alone to get everything done before they move on."Flenner and the crew at Florida Virtual School have been doing this for more than 20 years. They are professionals and they understand we are far from that. And that is okay."I want to tell parents to take a deep breath and do the best you can," Flenner said. This story was originally reported by Jasmine Styles at WFTS. 2084

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that the number of online puppy scams has risen sharply in 2020. The rise in scams comes as more families seek to adopt pets to ease the loneliness, tension or boredom associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.Scammers are taking advantage of the rising demand by tricking would-be pet owners into paying hundreds of dollars or more to purchase animals that ultimately don’t exist. The BBB says its Scam Tracker has received nearly 4,000 reports of pet fraud so far this year and the bureau projects it will receive about 4,300 reports by the end of 2020, amounting to approximately .1 million in losses. Last year, there were only 1,870 pet scams reported, amounting to just over million. The BBB says it started to see this spike in scams when the pandemic hit the U.S. in the spring. Accordingly, there were more reports in April than in the first three months of the year combined. This trend is continuing into the holiday season as well. The BBB says it received 337 complaints about puppy scams in 2020, which is a dramatic increase from 77 for the same month in 2019.The median loss reported to Scam Tracker this year is 0 and victims between 35 and 55 accounted for half of the reports. With scammers evolving their tactics during these difficult times, the BBB says consumers should exercise extreme caution when shopping for pets online.Data from the Scam Tracker shows that mobile payment apps like Zelle and CashApp are often being used now, whereas Western Union or MoneyGram wire transfers were popular payment methods documented in a 2017 study. Also, the BBB says pet scammers now commonly use online advertising tools, like sponsored links to boost their fraudulent listings in search results.Additionally, the pandemic has given scammers a new tool in their arsenal. Reports show many fraudsters are telling victims they cannot meet the animals before sending money because of COVID-19. To combat this, experts recommend using video conferencing to meet the animal and owner virtually before buying.Scammers have also made COVID-19-related money requests for items such as climate-controlled crates, insurance and non-existent COVID-19 vaccines.Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO, says knowing the red flags associated with these pet scams can help consumers avoid heartache and losing their money. The BBB recommends the following when buying pets online:See the pet in person before paying any money. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, consider a video call with the seller so you can see the seller and the actual pet for sale. Since scammers are not likely to comply with the request, this may help avoid a scam.Do a reverse image search of the photo of the pet and search for a distinctive phrase in the description.Do research to get a sense of a fair price for the breed you are considering. Think twice if someone advertises a purebred dog for free or at a deeply discounted price … it could be a fraudulent offer.Check out a local animal shelter online for pets you can meet before adopting.BBB urges more law enforcement action against pet scammers. The public should help to educate those looking for pets online by sharing BBB’s tips and study.Click here to learn more. 3267
