BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China has invested 115 billion yuan (17.45 billion U.S. dollars) on the South-to-North Water Diversion Project as of the end of last year, a senior official said Monday.E Jingping, director of the Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council, said construction on 40 projects began last year, marking a new annual record.No major accidents happened while constructing the projects last year, E said.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern regions. It will consist of three routes: an eastern, middle and western route. The project started with construction of the eastern route in 2002.Up until now, both of the eastern and middle routes were already under construction. The western route, meant to replenish the Yellow River with water from the upper reaches of the Yangtze through tunnels in the high mountains of western China, is still in the planning stage.About 330,000 people in Hubei and Henan Provinces will be relocated before the middle route is completed in 2014.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Oracle Corp. on Monday announced that its co-president Safra Catz is taking the additional position as the software giant's chief financial officer (CFO), following the resignation of its current CFO Jeff Epstein.Epstein was named Oracle's CFO in September 2008, and had reported directly to Catz. Oracle didn't give details about Epstein's departure.Catz joined Oracle in April 1999 and has been its president since January 2004. She previously served as the company's CFO from November 2005 to September 2008."Safra already has the long-standing confidence of our employees, our Board and our shareholders," Oracle's chief executive officer Larry Ellison said in a statement, adding that " there is no more logical choice for CFO.""The CFO function has reported to Safra for a number of years and she's acted as Oracle's CFO in the past. SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft Corp. on Monday said it will buy Internet communications company Skype for 8.5 billion U.S. dollars in cash, a bold move for the software giant to explore new business opportunities."Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement."Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world," he added.Microsoft said it has agreed to buy Skype from the investor group led by Silver Lake, and the deal has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies.Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.The Skype deal ranks one of the biggest purchase in the 36-year history of Microsoft, which is struggling to compete in the fields of Internet and mobile phones beyond its dominance on personal computer software market.Founded in 2003 and based in Luxembourg, Skype offers a software application that allows users to make free or cheap phone calls and chats over the Internet with additional features including instant messaging and video conferencing.Numbers showed that Skype's 170 million connected users made over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010.Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009.In a press release announcing the acquisition, Microsoft noted that the deal will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, generating significant new business and revenue opportunities, and enhancing its existing offerings of real-time communications products and services.Microsoft said Skype will support its devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and it will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.The acquisition is expected to obtain all required regulatory clearances within this calendar year, Microsoft said.

CANBERRA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Technology may have a harmful effect on children's development and creativity, Australia's report found on Tuesday.The Pilot Pen Australia Creativity Report found that children could be depending too much on technology such as computers.Written by psychologist Kimberley O'Brien, the report suggested that students are becoming scared of handwritten tasks as there is no spelling or grammar check tool to pick up their mistakes as they go along."Children who develop this kind of dependency on computer software are less likely to write using a pen and paper given that they will feel a vulnerability to failure," the report said.It said using software that immediately tells children to correct errors like spelling and grammar could disrupts their thought patterns and stunts their ideas, and children who hand write are able to produce almost twice as many ideas as those using computer technology to write a creative story.The report studied 300 Year five and six children, and found handwritten essays were completed significantly faster and contained a higher standard of sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, cohesion, ideas development and organization than those completed using keyboards.A further study found students in Years two, four and six produced up to twice as many ideas writing on pen and paper as those on computers.O'Brien said the results were due to computers putting extra pressure on writers to edit as they go rather than get their ideas down first and edit minor mistakes later.O'Brien said children were most likely to develop their handwriting skills between the ages of eight and 10, and she urged all teachers and parents to ensure their children met community standards for legible handwriting.However, she said that computers are a good support tool, and they should not replace handwriting entirely.
