SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman was sentenced in a federal courtroom Wednesday for stealing mail from nearly 120 San Diegans and cashing stolen checks at banks.Marie Crystal Mays, 33, was sentenced to four years in prison for conspiring to steal mail from residents, including in the Rancho Pe?asquitos area, and defrauding banks in order to cash the stolen checks, according to the Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California.Prosecutors say the investigation identified at least 119 victims.Mays pleaded guilty in August 2019 to conspiracy, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, possession of stolen mail, and possession with intent to unlawfully use five or more identification documents.As part of her scheme, she stole credit cards, checks, and money orders from mailboxes, authorities say. She then created a bank account in a victim's name, deposited stolen checks, and withdrew money for herself.A judge also ordered Mays to pay ,950.66 in restitution to four banks and credit unions.“The people of San Diego deserve the peace of mind of knowing that when they send or receive mail, thieves won’t steal it from their mailboxes and scavenge for credit cards, checks and personally identifiable information,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “The defendant’s conduct showed a callous and selfish disregard for scores of citizens’ privacy.” 1377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Aldofo Otanez was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 17-years-old."When he's medicated correctly he's very funny, he's always very caring very caring person," said his brother Tomas. Aldofo has been in and out of treatment centers his whole life. Most recently, a hospital assigned him to a home in Spring Valley called Mi Casa Es Su Casa. "Right away we said, 'no, he's never been in a place like this,"' said Tomas. "People don't fit in there. They don't, they're crumbled up, there's about 3 or 4 people per room."Tomas was planning a trip to visit his brother on February 16th. When he called the facility, he says they told him Aldofo had been missing for two days. "It's disturbing," said Tomas. "I mean, it shouldn't happen, a simple phone call, 'your brother isn't here, it's been a day or two'. Give us a call..nothing."It's been more than two weeks now with no sign of Adolfo. "It's very sad, I'm taking it as calm as I can so I can think about what to do next." The family is passing out flyers and posting pictures to Instagram with hopes that someone knows where he is. "The family is pretty sad, I've got a lot of siblings and they're all very worried.""He has no money, no ID, no social security on him," said Tomas. "So he's just stranded out there somewhere."10News spoke to the manager of Mi Casa Es Su Casa who says he didn't call the family right away because he claims to have lost their contact info. He also says he didn't file a missing persons report because police would not let him. San Diego Police checked their records and said they never spoke to the facility that day. The family is holding a search party on March 3rd in the Starbucks parking lot at 8626 Jamacha Boulevard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An apologetic teenage girl explained how she crashed her mother’s car into her neighbor’s garage in Encanto Friday.13-year-old Akasha Alexander had been taught how to start the BMW in the morning to help her mother. On Friday, the car was parked a big too close to the edge of a steep hill.The girl pulled the clutch and the car took off, crashing through the neighbor’s fence, clipping a water line, and ending up in the garage.“I see the fence go down and i'm like, oh no, and then all I see is boom,” said Alexander.Neighbor Melvin Glover’s daughter and grandchildren are visiting him for Easter. They said the impact shook the Glover home and frightened them all.The car was towed from the home.Alexander said she plans to bake Glover a red velvet cake. 784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Old Town San Diego bar and restaurant offered 22 cent beers for 22 minutes Tuesday to poke fun at burglars who stole .All 22 of the draft beers were discounted at Home and Away, 2222 San Diego Avenue, exactly 36 hours after the 3:07 a.m. break-in."Just the whole thing is extremely ironic and funny," said employee Jason Clay. "The comedic value I got was thinking about the time that they gambled with their life to get the amount that they did, and drilling that safe open and seeing the dollars that was in there. That's the best part."Surveillance video shows two men with baggy pants force their way into the bar Monday at 3:07 a.m. One tries unsuccessfully to pry open a cash register, then joins his partner in a back room where the two grab the safes. While leaving, they fumble the safes and nearly drop their drawers. "They were probably Raiders fans," Clay deadpanned, gesturing to his Kansas City Chiefs hat.The suspects have not been identified. 996
