ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Three weeks after the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, the community is urging city and state leaders to make some changes.Three women were killed during the collapse. A tribute was held this week at the Encinitas City Council meeting for the victims. That’s where father and husband Pat Davis spoke out, saying healing will take time. “There will be a new normal in my life without these three gifted women,” says Davis. Davis lost his wife Julie, daughter Anne Clave, and wife’s sister in the bluff collapse. The family was out for a day at the beach on August 2 when the sand and large rocks came crashing down. “We do not have to accept tragedy if it is preventable.”Davis is urging the city to stabilize the bluff by adding concrete walls against the cliffs, sand replenishment or even cutting off some public access to the beach. Some California lawmakers are pushing for the government to pay for the stabilization after congress approved the Storm Damage Project in 2016. It has sat idle since being approved. “I do not want to see what happened to my family happen ever again.”The mayor and other city leaders toured the beaches with representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Thursday, but so far no decisions have been made.  1315

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — A mother is speaking out and speaking up after a high school administrator called cheerleaders at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan strippers.Dorrine Griffen said she was shocked and hurt when her daughter came home after a pep rally at Farmington's Harrison High School to learn a school administrator called out the cheer team and degraded them.“You got to refer to those students as strippers, and now you’re right back, hands-on, working with them,” said Griffen.On September 21, Harrison High School cheerleaders held a pep rally in the school gymnasium when something was said by a school administrator.“She said the assistant principal referred to the routine the girls performed at the pep rally and said she wouldn’t allow them to perform anymore or would not want to have them perform anymore because they look like strippers,” Griffen said.Griffin, an educator herself, said this kind of language is disappointing.“We have a bigger role. Fed up with limited leg room onboard airline cabins?Italian seat manufacturer Aviointeriors has come up with a design that allows passengers to stretch their legs as much as they want when they travel without any extra cost.The catch? The seats are so far upright that they'll be pretty much standing up.Unveiled at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018 in Hamburg, the SkyRider 2.0 aims to help airlines squeeze in more passengers by allowing an "ultra-high density" and reducing the space between rows.It's a new and improved version of a design the manufacturer revealed in 2010 but failed to get off the ground.The original Skyrider, which was was not approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, was designed in the style of a horse saddle.Aviointeriors compared the seating position to that of a horseback rider, pointing out that cowboys can sit on saddles for hours without feeling uncomfortable.Stand up idea?The revised seats have extra padding, as well as poles to connect each row from the ceiling to the cabin floor.According to Aviointeriors, the SkyRider 2.0 "ensures an increased upright passenger position, allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort."While it remains to be seen whether Aviointeriors' definition of "adequate comfort" matches the average person's, the company stresses that the seats, designed for short haul flights, have many benefits."The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies," says a spokesperson for Aviointeriors."Furthermore, Sky Rider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs."Will it take off?The concept of vertical seats has been floating around for nearly two decades.Airbus proposed the idea of standing room flights as early as 2003 and in 2010, Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary announced that he was considering introducing special standing-room only areas of his airplanes.But the airline seems to have abandoned the idea for the time being."We have no plans to trial or introduce standing flights," a spokesperson told CNN last year.While Aviointeriors has dubbed the Skyrider 2.0 "the new frontier of low cost tickets and passenger experience," aircraft specialists have pointed out various stumbling blocks ranging from potential evacuation delays due to limited space and the fact that there is no room under the seats for personal items.The innovative seat is yet to be snapped up by an airline.   2592

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - Nearly three-dozen cats were taken in by the San Diego Humane Society after they were left behind inside a condominium in Escondido last month, the agency announced Wednesday.The property manager of a condominium complex in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue called the group on Oct. 22 to report that one of the condo's tenants had abandoned the cats after being evicted, according to the SDHS.Officers from the SDHS' law enforcement division responded to the home and found 31 cats living in "unsanitary conditions" inside the unit, SDHS spokeswoman Nina Thompson said.The cats were taken to SDHS campuses in Escondido and Oceanside for extensive medical exams, Thompson said. One cat had to be euthanized and a majority of the cats were found to be suffering from numerous medical conditions, including upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections and heart murmurs.The remaining 30 cats underwent more than three weeks of intensive medical care and were in the process of being transferred to SDHS' rescue partner Love Your Feral Felines for recovery, Thompson said.The Humane Society encourages the public to report animal emergencies, cruelty or neglect by calling 619-299-7012. 1234
