MILWAUKEE, Wis. – When Dawn Nadboralski lost her father, a sharpshooter with the US Army, it broke her heart. “I’m a daddy’s girl,” she said. “I’m the only child, so when he passed, it hit me really hard.” To help herself heal, Nadboralski went into her dad’s garage and started using his tools – turning old wooden pallets into American flags. “It takes probably about an hour and a half and I paint them by hand,” she said. “I feel like in a way, it’s honoring my father.” And at the same time, it’s honoring the lives of men that fought for this country. Nadboralski sells the flags and donates that money to Forest Home Cemetery to buy headstones for Civil War soldiers who have unmarked graves. “We don’t leave anyone behind even if they’re gone,” said Thomas Ludka, a military veteran. Ludka and Maraget Berres work to find unmarked graves. The headstones are free but cost 5 to install – money they say is well worth it. “A man like him helped destroy slavery.” Ludka said while pointing out a gravesite of a Civil War soldier. “His life meant something. His service meant something. He should not be forgotten.” So far, Nadboralski has sold 33 flags – raising enough money to buy 13 headstones. “I feel like this is just a small thing I can do to give back,” she said. Hundreds of people had to be rescued from fast-rising flood waters in the Midwest as several areas dealt with historic flooding that washed out roads and bridges.For many, all they have left is what they could grab from their homes before fleeing. Outside Omaha, Nebraska, animal rescue groups worked to save dozens of farm animals in the area, but others had to be left behind. Weather experts say, so far, 38 spots in the Midwest have reported record-high river levels, most of it caused by rain and melting snow. RICHMOND, Va., — Hospitalizations and the number of cases connected to the coronavirus are decreasing, according to Henrico-Richmond District Health Director Dr. Danny Avula.Avula and city officials provided an update on the progress surrounding COVID-19 and evictions during a Monday afternoon press conference inside City Council Chambers. Avula said the progress has recently plateaued, but the city is in a better position compared to other states.“The pandemic is still very real. COVID-19 is real and what we don’t want to happen is that COVID-19 catches us slipping,” Mayor Levar Stoney said.There have been more than 2,200 positive cases reported in the city and 29 deaths since the start of the pandemic. No Richmonders have died from complications to the virus within the past two weeks, Stoney said.Dr. Avula said they are investigating a cluster of cases that stemmed from a party.About 50 people attended the party indoors and four people have tested positive, Avula said. He would not reveal where the party was held.“Now we are seeing the immediate impact of that. I think that serves as a cautionary tale that the virus is still out there. More than a hundred people in the Cleveland area are facing federal charges relating to crimes targeted under Operation Legend, according to an update from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.A total of 101 people have been charged. Of those, 59 people have been brought up on narcotics charges, authorities said. Thirty-eight people have been charged with firearm offenses, and four individuals have been charged with violent crimes.“Thanks to the hard work of all those involved in our collaborative law enforcement partnership, we have now charged over 100 defendants in Cleveland under Operation Legend,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. “Among those charged are career criminals, heroin and fentanyl traffickers, felons with rifles and other high-powered weapons, carjackers, bank robbers and many more. We will continue to pursue these violent criminals and drug traffickers until everyone in Cleveland can live safely and peacefully.”Operation Legend is a federal initiative that was rolled out in July across multiple cities in America, including Cleveland, targeting violent crimes.So far nation-wide, nearly 5,500 people have been arrested and more than 2,000 guns have been confiscated, authorities said. Of those arrested, 276 people are facing homicide charges.Additionally, across the country, 28 kilos of heroin, around 30 kilos of cocaine, more than 16 kilos of fentanyl and more than 200 kilos of methamphetamine have been seized.
