SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than a dozen men were arrested after Border Patrol says they tried to enter the US illegally by boat Monday morning. According to Border patrol, the first incident began around 12:30 a.m. Monday when the US Coast Guard spotted a 23-foot-long vessel with four men onboard roughly six miles off the coast of Mission Bay. All the men, who were determined to be Mexican nationals, were taken into custody for entering the US illegally. Around 3:30 a.m. Monday, the Coast Guard found a small panga-style boat off the Imperial Beach pier with nine men onboard. The nine people aboard the boat admitted to being Mexican nationals and were all taken into custody, according to the agency. 714

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash in City Heights, that has turned into a stolen vehicle case.It started when a red SUV crashed into a Black SUV on the corner of Euclid and Polk Avenues around 4:30 p.m. Friday.A man and woman fled the scene. Police say the man was carrying a black backpack. Paramedics were called to the scene, but no one was hurt in the crash, according to police. According to the DMV, when they ran the plates of the stolen car, it didn’t match the vehicle they had on file. 553

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was killed and another person was in critical condition following a shooting in Shelltown early Saturday.The shooting was reported at about 1:30 a.m. near Epsilon St. and 42nd St., according to San Diego Police. Two men were standing outside when the shooting occurred, but it's unclear what led up to the gunshots.One man in his 50s died and another man in his 60s suffered non-life threatening injuries.Police were not able to immediately give a suspect description, but were interviewing neighbors Saturday morning. 556

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New rules for purchasing bullets go into effect on July 1st, requiring background checks every time someone wants to buy ammunition in California.The law is part of Proposition 63, which voters approved in 2016. In addition to the background checks, it requires a small fee for each transaction."This is to provide more checks and balances, so we have a better idea of who's being sold the ammunition," says Ron Markus, the spokesperson for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. "If you're someone that doesn't pass a background check, you shouldn't be allowed to buy ammunition."But critics say the law will have unintended consequences, including creating a black market for bullets bought out of state."If you're a Californian, and you go out of state to get ammunition and bring it back into the state of California, you've just broken the law. But if you live in another state, you can bring as much ammunition as you want into the state and give it to anybody in California that you like," says Michael Schwartz, the Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC. He thinks that will lead criminals to conspire with people from out of state to supply bullets.Schwartz also says the background checks won't be as easy as the law intended. As it's written, the law requires instant background checks that run people's information through criminal and mental health databases. Schwartz says only people who are already in the system will get an "instant" result. The rest will have to go through more lengthy checks to buy bullets, which could take days."This won't prevent bad people from doing bad things," Schwartz says. "All it does is put onerous requirements on people who are looking to follow the law."Meanwhile, gun shops are seeing a surge in bullet sales as July nears. They also believe they'll get more business once the law goes into effect since it requires all bullet sales to be done in person at a store. Any online sales will also have to go through a licensed retailer in California.But Schwartz says gun store owners still oppose the rule, even though they stand to profit from it."It's more business for the shop owners, but not more business that they're happy about," he says.Gun safety advocates say the concerns are misguided. They say the sacrifices gun owners will have to make because of the new laws are reasonable when compared to the loss of life from guns."We're sick and tired of hearing about people being shot and killed every single day in this country," says Marcus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 700 underclassmen moved into dorms at San Diego State University Thursday, and a new report says a growing number of them are from out of state.A new analysis by USA Today says 78 percent of SDSU's incoming freshman were from California students in 2017. That compares to 88 percent in 2012. Out-of-state students pay an extra ,880 in tuition each year. "The cost is definitely a part of it, but, just, Florida isn't as appealing. Too hot, too humid," said Jackson Noye, an incoming freshman from Jacksonville. "Nothing can really beat San Diego."The University called the study "a bit misleading." In a statement, it said enrollment for in-state and out-of-state students is increasing, and that any suggestion it is prioritizing out-of-state students is untrue. "The number of students SDSU can admit and teach, as defined by the resident target enrollments, is contingent upon the amount of state funding allocated," the statement read in part. "SDSU is given an enrollment target for in-state students every year, and the state only provides funding to teach the targeted number of students. For that reason, SDSU currently enrolls the number of students funded."While freshman admission may be getting more competitive, many times students have a better chance of getting in to their top choice as a transfer. "The most selective public four-year universities often have higher acceptance rates for transfer applicants than first-year applicants," said Craig Meister, an admissions consultant. Rob Franek, editor and chief of the Princeton Review, said in addition to having solid test scores and a high GPA, students can set themselves apart by showing their desire to go to their top choice. In other words, get in touch with admissions counselors and attend university events. Franek said many of those interactions can be tracked by universities over time. 1906
