BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- A team of European researchers announced that they have found vast water vapor out of our solar system, according to a study in the U.S. journal Science Friday.Using Herschel Space Observatory, a European Space Agency satellite, the researchers observed that the vast water vapor enveloped a 175-light-year-away star and its surrounding dusk disk, which will eventually form a planet.The water vapor, which is "enough to fill thousand of Earth ocean", may rain down and seed the future oceans on the young planet, as it did on the Earth 4.5 billion years ago, the researchers suggested."Scientists have long suspected there were these reservoir of cold water hiding in the outer regions of planet disk, ... now the theory gets considerably stronger." said astronomer Michiel Hogerheijde of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands.The finding not only explained where our Earth's ocean came from, but also indicated that there are likely to be many "ocean worlds" throughout the galaxies, he concluded.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Materialism could be harmful to marriage, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy Thursday.The researchers collected online "relationship assessment" questionnaires from 1,734 U.S. married couples.The questionnaire covered the topics about the couples' marital satisfaction, conflict patterns, marital communication, and marriage stability, and so on.Non-materialistic couples were about 10 to 15 percent better than those materialistics in their marital satisfaction, marriage stability and conflict levels, according to the study."What we found was a general pattern that materialism seems to be harmful to marriage," said study researcher Jason Carroll, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University.It didn't matter whether the materialistic spouse was the man or the woman, he added.However, materialism is not simply black-or-white: some couples can pursue their fortune and keep their relationship strong at the same time, the researcher suggested.But breaking their materialistic thought would be helpful for most couples, Carroll concluded.

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The average global land temperature has increased by around one degree Cetigrade since the mid-1950s, American scientists announced last week after reviewing historical temperature records to date.According to media reports, the scientists of the Berkeley Earth project have studied more than a billion temperature records dating back to the 1800s from 15 sources around the world.And the result is in line with the estimate made by major institutions which keep official records on the global climate, including the Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in the US and the Met Office's Hadley Centre in Britain.Meanwhile, the scientists established an open database for the climate records so that skeptics on climate change can assess climage change on their own.Nevertheless, the finding of the scientists at the University of California, Berkeley did not convince climate change skeptics, according to a New York Times report.Anthony Watts, one prominent US skeptics, claimed the study's "methodology was flawed".
