SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. "We're taking what could be negative and making it a positive and helping other kids. That is really the most important message."The book is available on Amazon. 1545
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - According to the San Diego Association of Governments, the unemployment rate in San Diego County was just under 16% at the end of June. The good news is that number is down from the 25% unemployment in May. Still, more than 250,000 San Diegans are unemployed, and many are hurting financially. However, ABC 10News did discover a select group that plans for unforeseen events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and they seem to be doing just fine. What's their secret? FIRE.FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. We profiled this group back in November. Last fall, we met Jennifer Mah, a money coach and Community Manager for the San Diego FIRE chapter called Choose-FI before screening a documentary on the subject. And we learned then that many in the Financial Independence community save an average of 40% of their income. So we wanted to know, how are they doing now in the middle of this financial meltdown?"This is the first time in an economic downturn or instability that I've ever had a sense of strength," says Mah over a recent Zoom interview.And Jennifer's not alone. She introduced us to two couples with diverse stories."As soon as quarantine started and I was laid off, that was super scary for me," adds Grace Damazo.But not as scary for Grace and Mike Damazo had they not been part of the Choose-FI community. The Damazo's are a self-described frugal couple in their 30's. Yes, they save more money than many of their peers, but they're also investing in real estate. And before the pandemic hit, they sold one of their cars to cut back on expenses. If they travel, they do it with credit card bonuses, meal prep to save instead of eating out, and if they do, they take advantage of happy hours or specials."And also Grace, cutting my hair," says Mike laughing.From the looks of it, Grace is doing a great job with those clippers, and it all adds up. Mike's position in the Navy is, of course, considered essential. But Grace, a fitness instructor, was laid off at a big box gym and immediately transitioned her clients online. The pandemic only has them doubling down on saving."It was a realization that this was the right path, at least for us, and we need to fast track it," adds Grace.And then there is Wendy and Curtis Mays. A couple in their 50's, with six kids. If you think 50 is too late to start saving, think again. The Mays claim they were in a million-dollar hole just three years ago, and then they found Choose-FI."It's been a long time of having that fear in the back of our minds, and to not have it anymore is just incredible," says a relieved Wendy Mays.Wendy and Curtis sold their house and started renting because they could save more money and pay down debt. Family outings are free when possible, like a trip to the beach. They've paid down so much debt; Wendy was able to quit her full-time job and co-host her own financial consulting business. Curtis says the key is moving past the stigma of debt, talking with others, and figuring out what works best."They're able to do it, and we're able to do it, we just put it in our form with our platform, with our background, with our kids," adds Curtis Mays.Both couples were on what they call a 50-50 plan. 50% of their income goes straight to savings, and 50% to pay down debt. But in these uncertain times, they say they're saving even more because you never know what tomorrow will bring. 3417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A small coffee shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch is now the world's best coffee roaster.Mostra Coffee just won Roast Magazine's top honor as the 2020 Roaster of the Year."It was a really far fetched, big dream of ours to one day achieve one day," said Mostra Coffee co-founder Jelynn Malone. "So the fact we were able to achieve it in six years is mind-blowing to us."Malone started the company with a few friends in a garage in 4S Ranch. They were looking for ways to help poor people in the Philippines and learned that buying coffee from local farmers can help provide money and jobs to the region."It was rooted in good and wanting to help," said Malone. "We just believed in our mission so much that we thought, you know, let's just go for it. What it's become now is just surreal and amazing."Right now, Mostra Coffee has one shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch, but they have plans to expand. They're opening a second location in 4S Ranch in March and just signed a lease for a spot in Mira Mesa.Malone said their passion for coffee is what's fueled their success."It's very similar to wine," she said. "It'll taste anywhere from peaches to chocolates, to tea leaf flavor notes to blueberry. There are so many different flavor notes you can get out of coffee that I don't think people realize, and you get to do that in specialty coffee."In addition to the new locations, Mostra is expanding into the instant coffee business. They just launched a line of single-serve instant coffee packs."Now you can enjoy Mostra coffee when you're flying or camping or at work or rushing in the morning and don't have time to come into the store," said Malone.Through all the expansion, Malone said they plan to keep the small-batch mentality that brought them this far."The community's been so supportive that I think people will really appreciate having more access to Mostra." 1889
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Superior Court judge gave San Diego County restaurants the green light to serve on-site again, but not all will make use of the opportunity.For Roddy Browning, the pressure to reopen his restaurant is intense.“We lay in bed at 2:30 in the morning, going, 'Okay, what am I going to do? What am I going to do tomorrow? What am I going to do the next day?'” said Browning, who owns Oceanside's Flying Pig Pub and Kitchen.Browning said sales are down 60% and employees have been reduced from 30 to 12. Reopening for outdoor dining under the new court ruling could boost those numbers.“The state's going to appeal it, and what is the point in opening back up again, and then bringing all these people back to work and saying okay guys the ruling changed, now we're going to have to kick you out of the restaurant again,” Browning said. “I don’t want to do that to my employees anymore.”Don't get him wrong. Browning does plan to reopen under the new court order - but he wants to respect the full three weeks intended in this latest shutdown order, set to complete on Dec. 28."This is not about us against them," Browning said. "We said we would give the governor his three weeks, and I'm going to give him his three weeks."But other San Diego restaurants are planning to remain takeout only until health officials advise otherwise.At Spring Valley's Cali-Comfort Barbecue, a gathering place for sports fans, owner Shawn Walchef says he's not offering indoor or outdoor dining.“We believe that the coronavirus is the antithesis of hospitality. Everything we do in our blood is to take care of people,” Walchef said. “Social distancing doesn’t work in our business. We welcome people into our homes.”Walchef cut about half of his staff - a day he calls his toughest as a restaurant owner.But he says Cali Comfort has fully embraced multiple digital ordering systems, helping it to remain profitable amid the pandemic.Still, the recent order impacts many. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team of scientists at UC San Diego is getting into the beach business."We looked around and said 'what's the most important thing that we could possibly make?" said Biology Professor Stephen Mayfield. "And that answer is obvious. Flip flops and surfboards."Much more important than the products themselves is what they are made of. Mayfield wants to make plastic products out of more sustainable materials than the traditional petroleum. He says extracting the oil from algae is a much cleaner process. And because it is biodegradable, old and worn-out flip-flops and surfboards won't sit in landfills for thousands of years.The surfboards are virtually indistinguishable from traditional boards, and only cost about five dollars more. Mayfield says about a dozen professional surfers are already using algae boards in worldwide competition.His team at UCSD is working with a local manufacturer to bring the boards to market. Mayfield expects them to be ready by the end of spring.The flip flops are currently in the prototype stage. Mayfield plans to distribute several pairs to UCSD students this summer for testing. He hopes they will be ready for sale to the public by next year."My dream would be if we could make all the flip-flops in the world out of this material. This would have an enormous benefit to the planet."Mayfield's team are experimenting with the chemistry to control how quickly the flip-flops will biodegrade. His plan is to engineer them to last the same as a standard flip-flop. 1531
