BEIJING - China imported 139,900 sedans in 2007, up 25.13 percent over the previous year, with the largest share of 46 percent, or 63,800 units, coming from Germany, China Customs figures revealed. The sedan imports worth 5.01 billion US dollars, up 25.41 percent from the previous year, took up 45 percent of China's total automobile imports which has slightly overshot the previous year's total to stand around 310,889 units.China Trading Center for Automobile Import predicted late January that tariff reduction since July 1 had given a stimulus to China's consumption of overseas made automobiles, which could reach 300,000 in 2007.China customs figures showed about 79 percent of the imports were vehicles with an engine size of or larger than 2.5 liters.Japan exported 29,700 sedans to China, the second largest total, while the United States ranked third with 18,000 units.China's sedan exports, by contrast, more than doubled year-on-year to 188,600 units in 2007.Chery, the flag-bearer of Chinese brands, saw a 132-percent surge in exports in 2007, to 119,800 units. The carmaker, which has accelerated its expansion overseas in recent years, expected to export 180,000 units this year.Chang'an Automotive Group, China's fourth largest automaker, sold more than 40,000 cars overseas last year, against 21,700 in 2006.China, the world's third largest vehicle producer, after Japan and United States, found its auto output grow 22.9 percent to 9.04 million units last year, according to figures with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner. The NDRC deputy economic performance department director Zhu Hongren said, since quantity was not a problem anymore, auto producers should increase their focus on quality. In 2006, China overtook Japan to become the world's second largest car market after the United States, with sales of 7.2 million units, up 25.13 percent year-on-year.Compared with their international counterparts, China's auto makers are still small in terms of production scale and behind in technology. In addition, the country's auto boom has created growing problems, such as increasing traffic jams and pollution.

WASHINGTON -- The special US envoy on Sudan affairs said Wednesday that important progress has been made toward peace talks on Darfur and China plays a "constructive" role in facilitating such progress."I am very happy with the role the Chinese are playing," Andrew Natsios said in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank."It is a constructive role," Natsios said. "I think the Chinese are like a locomotive that is speeding up."With mediation by China, he said, the Sudanese government has accepted a UN Security Council resolution adopted in July to authorize a hybrid UN-African Union peacekeeping force for the Darfur region. He said the major obstacles to the peace talks now come from the rebel groups rather than the Sudanese government. In a related development, China's Special Representative on African Affairs Liu Guijin said in Beijing on Tuesday that China will send a military liaison officer to Sudan's Darfur.Liu, who has just wrapped up a seven-day visit to the United States and the United Nations, said China has informed the UN of its decision.China also pledged to send a 315-member multi-functional engineering unit to Darfur in early October, which would be the first batch of UN-AU peacekeepers in place, and China will stick to its commitment, Liu said.Liu reiterated China's constructive and unique role in finding a solution to the Darfur issue, saying China has provided much aid and help with regard to the reconstruction and development of Darfur."The US and UN both hold positive views on China's role in resolving the Darfur issue, and hope China will play a bigger role in this regard," said Liu.

BEIJING -- American chip manufacturer Intel Corp. said here Monday that it had settled a copyright infringement dispute with China's Shenzhen Dongjin Communications Technologies Co. Ltd. after more than two years of legal battle. The two companies said in a joint statement that given their developing strategies and business operations, pursuing the lawsuit was not in the best commercial interests of each company. Intel Corp. sued Shenzhen Dongjin, a private Chinese company, in 2004 for alleged copyright infringements relating to its Inter Dialogic System Release 5.1.1 software (SR5.1.1) and demanded compensation of 7.9 million US dollars. In compensation terms it was the biggest IPR case to be heard at the Intermediate People's Court of Shenzhen, a boomtown in south China's Guangdong Province. At the request of the American multinational, the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court seized and sealed all of the disputed products and relevant reference materials on January 20, 2005. In April 2005, Shenzhen Dongjin, through its subsidiary company in Beijing, countersued Intel for technology monopoly at the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in Beijing. The two companies said the out-of-court settlement respected the Chinese law on IPR protection and the positive efforts made by Chinese courts. The details of the settlement were kept confidential. He Jiannan, general manager of Shenzhen Dongjin, said the settlement demonstrated the progress made by China in technology innovation, company management and IPR protection.

An investor smiles before an electronic board showing stock information at a securities firm in Xiamen, East China's Fujian Province March 20, 2007. [newsphoto]The net income of the 287 funds launched by 53 fund management firms totaled 124.8 billion yuan, while paper profits reached about 146 billion yuan, according to WIND, a provider of Chinese financial data. The profits were more than 38 times greater than the seven billion yuan earned in 2005 by all 206 funds under 46 fund management firms. The majority of profits came from the 216 stock-leaning funds, which have at least 60 percent of their investments in stocks. They reported total operating profits of 261.4 billion yuan, accounting for 96.53 percent of all fund profits. The country experienced a fund investment boom last year as investors shifted low-interest bank deposits into the bourses, which surged 130 percent last year after a four-year slump. Fifteen million people have invested in funds. The proportion of individual investors in closed-end funds rose to 74.21 percent by the end of 2006, an increase of 18.05 percentage points from the end of the first half, according to WIND. China raised 390 billion yuan in 90 new funds and registered 7.78 million new accounts in 2006. More than 300 mutual funds have sprung up in China since 1992. The funds are valued at around one trillion yuan, accounting for 19 percent of the present stock markets.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Thursday warned of worsening health in the country's vast rural areas while praising the government for its commitment to improve healthcare in the countryside."The health indicators have failed to improve in pace with the economic indicators," said Margaret Chan when addressing a conference on rural primary healthcare in China."The health gap between rural and urban areas has grown even wider and health in parts of rural China is deteriorating."Medical costs are rising faster than the growth of per capita income in rural areas, she added. She said she appreciated the government's efforts and plans to build a medical system for all people, saying "when fair and accessible public health services become the clear targets of a country's public health policy, people's health will be improved".The WHO chief said she had noticed that the tasks on improving people's well-being in the report by Party chief Hu Jintao at the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China included a basic medical insurance system for urban dwellers and a cooperative medical care system in rural areas. She said recent WHO research has found that diseases are the source of poverty for 30 to 50 percent of the rural population of 737 million.A growing number of rural people, especially the aged, are suffering from various diseases; however, few have access to decent healthcare, she told the conference.Chan criticized the practice of allowing healthcare services to be commercialized in rural area, warning that it will cause the patients deeper suffering. The government has pledged to provide its population with basic medical care by 2020.It is expanding medical care through the Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme, a plan under which subscribers are funded to the tune of 50 yuan (.4) per person - 20 yuan (.6) from the central government, 20 yuan from the local government and 10 yuan (.3) from the individual.Vice-Minister of Health Chen Xiaohong said nearly 85 percent of the country's rural area, or 2,429 counties, are participating in the plan.
