STOCKHOLM, May 9 (Xinhua) -- To mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Sweden, a Guqin concert was held in Stockholm on Sunday evening.The concert presented 12 different pieces, half of them about Guqin, some of them are the Xiao, a beautiful flute. Some of them they played together. All the music are about 2000 years old. One of the most beautiful ones is called Liushui, Flowing Water, that piece is on a golden disk in a voyage in an American Spaceship went away in 1977 out in the outer space.Famous sinologist Cecilia Lindqvist planned the concert with the support of Sweden's National Music Association, Chinese Embassy in Sweden and Sweden's Union of Chinese Associations."It's a very important day because 60 years ago exactly on this date, May 9, Sweden and China established diplomatic relations, and actually Sweden was the first country in the west to do so. So we are very proud and we have long been in contact with China after that," said Lindqvist."Since then cultural contacts have developed tremendously, and this concert we are giving tonight is a kind of celebration of this very important day, so we hope lot of people will come here and listen to this music because 60 years is a long period. So we want to present Guqin to the Chinese community here and to all the Swedes who are interested in the Chinese Culture," she added.

BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Growth in China's consumer price index (CPI) is likely to see a reverse "V" shape this year and the possibility of a serious inflation is easing, said Ha Jiming, chief economist at the China International Capital Corp. (CICC).Speaking at an investor education activity in Beijing Saturday, Ha expected China's CPI to increase 3.2 percent in May from a year earlier, and said the CPI annual growth rate would even peak at 4 percent in June and July.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March and the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.The pick-up in CPI growth was a result of lower comparison base last year and the risk for a serious inflation in short term was defusing because both the global commodity prices and domestic meat and vegetable prices were falling, he said.In China, food prices accounted for one third of the CPI weight.The CICC has cut its estimate for China's economic growth this year to 9.5 percent from 10.5 percent, he said.Interest rate hikes would be unlikely this year as growth in consumer prices was expected to fall in the second half, he said.

GOTEBORG, Sweden, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. here Sunday to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit.Under the definitive stock purchase deal, Geely will own 100 percent of Volvo Cars and its related assets.The agreement was inked by Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Geely, and Lewis Booth, chief financial officer of Ford, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Volvo in Goteborg, the second largest city of Sweden. Geely Chairman Li Shufu attends a press conference after the signing ceremony in Goteborg of Sweden, March 28, 2010. TAIPEI, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Wednesday started their second round of talks in Taipei to pave the way for a long-awaited economic deal that is expected to boost cross-Strait economic ties.The two-day meeting in Tashi, Taoyuan county, is expected to speed up the consultation process of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The two sides are expected to exchange views on operational and technological topics including the main content of the agreement and consultation arrangements in the future.The mainland side is composed of directors of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), experts and economic affairs officials.Tang Wei, director-general of the Ministry of Commerce's Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao affairs department, said such an agreement would further cross-Strait economic cooperation, and help the two sides cope with the impact of possible economic crises in the future and the increasingly competitive international market.

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Suspected criminals found innocent or those whose cases prosecutors drop after excessive long periods of detention should be compensated by the state, according to a law amendment discussed by lawmakers Monday.The draft amendments to the State Compensation Law were submitted for their fourth reading to a four-day session of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, or the top legislature.According to the Criminal Procedure Law, police can detain those committing crimes or suspected of crimes. The first plenary of the 14th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), is held in Beijing, capital of China, on April 26, 2010.The Criminal Procedure Law says police should limit detention to three days and bring cases to prosecutors within those three days.The period could be prolonged by one to four days "in special cases," and to a maximum of 30 days for extremely serious crimes.Members of the NPC Standing Committee say the draft amendments should explicitly stipulate that those who have been detained illegally are entitled to compensation. Those who have been detained beyond the legally permitted period should be entitled to state compensation, the members said.Hong Hu, vice chairman of the NPC Law Committee, briefed lawmakers on the draft amendments.According to the NPC, the amendments aim to better defend people's rights from being violated by the State.It is hoped the amendments will enhance protection of detainees' rights.The current law took effect in 1995.State laws or amendments usually go through at least three readings before being adopted by China's top legislature.Top legislator Wu Bangguo presided over the session which opened Monday.
