The number of empty apartments available to rent in Manhattan soared to its highest level in recent history this summer.There are more than 13,000 apartments on the market in the heart of New York City, according to a real estate report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The group says this is the most inventory they have seen in Manhattan in 14 years of keeping track.July’s spike of 13,117 available units is an increase over June’s inventory of 10,789.For context, July 2020’s inventory is nearly 122 percent higher than last year; in July 2019 there were roughly 5,900 available apartments.The group also says July had the biggest year-over-year drop in median rent price in nearly nine years. The median rental price for an apartment in Manhattan, including anything from a studio to a 3-bedroom, was ,320 in July, and was ,595 in July 2019.The report also tracks the Queens and Brooklyn rental market. Both saw huge spikes in inventory, but none as large as Manhattan.Moving help website HireaHelper.com released results of a recent study on 2020 moving trends.Their study also found high-rent cities like San Francisco and New York saw more people leaving than moving in; both cities had 80 percent more people moving out of the area than moving in. The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest had a different look and smaller field on Saturday. Instead of being held outside in front of thousands of screaming spectators, it was conducted inside with a limited number of officials. The field was also much smaller as travel restrictions kept some competitive eaters away from the venue.But present were the two reigning champions who have dominated the contest in recent years, and they did not disappoint.Joey Chestnut won his 14th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in the last 15 years by consuming 75 hot dogs, marking a world record. The only competitor in the last 15 years to beat Chestnut, Matt Stonie, was among those unable to compete due to New York’s travel restrictions.Chestnut also became the first competitor to consume 1,000 hot dogs over the lifespan of the annual Fourth of July contest.Miki Sudo set a new women’s world record by consuming 48.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes on Saturday, surpassing Sonya Thomas’ marker of 45 hot dogs. The Macy's at Herald Square boarded up its windows in anticipation of protests from the result of the presidential election. PIX11 News cameras saw workers boarding up along the famous storefront Friday evening.A spokesperson for Macy’s told PIX11 News on Saturday the windows were initially scheduled to be covered up next week."Our windows at Macy’s Herald Square were previously scheduled to be dark next week in set-up for our annual holiday displays. Out of an abundance of caution, we are implementing additional security measures at several of our stores,” the spokesperson said.A variety of Fifth Avenue stores also were boarded up on Friday afternoon, some as early as 9 a.m. Many Manhattan stores, including Macy's at Herald Square, were looted in the unrest following protests against the police custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.PIX11 News' James Ford also contributed to this story. 915

The Gwinnett County Police Department says it has fired an officer for violating policy in a now-viral arrest in which he used a stun gun on a Black woman.In a press release, the department said that it had fired Officer Michael Oxford on Friday, adding that he "violated our policy and did not meet our core values."The video, which has been viewed thousands of times on TikTok, showed Oxford using the stun gun on the woman as he attempted to take her into custody.According to a police report, the incident occurred on Aug. 18, when Oxford responded to a 911 call in Loganville, Georgia. The caller claimed that a woman had thrown a bottle at their home and threatened a 9-year-old child.Oxford then went to the suspect's residence and encountered a woman he recognized from surveillance footage.The Gwinnett Police Department says that people at the home immediately began yelling at Oxford when he approached. According to a police statement, Oxford "attempted to speak with her about the incident but was unable to do so because the defendant in this case, Kyndesia Smith, began yelling at him."That's when the now-viral video begins. It shows Oxford threaten to arrest Smith, 22, if she doesn't stop interrupting. He then attempted to place Smith under arrest and tried to grab her by the shoulders.Eventually, Oxford ordered Smith on the ground. After she didn't immediately comply, he used his stun gun on her. Oxford also claimed in his police report that Smith later tried to kick him as he placed her in a police cruiser.According to NBC News, Smith was charged with "simple battery against an officer and willful obstruction of law enforcement."
