SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Tijuana man and his three adult children were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants across the border for profit, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.Luis Antonio Mendez-Brahan, 55, remains at large, but his children, Christopher Mendez, 28, and Wendy Monserrath Mendez, 24, both of Wasco in Kern County; and Nancy Jacqueline Suarez, 31, of Madera, were arrested at their homes on Thursday, prosecutors said.Mendez-Brahan is accused of leading the smuggling scheme for nearly a decade, which allegedly operated near the Tecate Port of Entry and "used an ever-changing cadre of spotters, guides and drivers" to move "hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States."Mendez-Brahan is accused of charging between ,000 and ,500 for each person smuggled into the U.S., while his children allegedly used family members in both countries to move the money. Border Patrol investigators tracked financial transactions between Mendez-Brahan's children in the U.S. to money service businesses in Tijuana, according to prosecutors.The four family members are each charged with conspiracy to bring in illegal aliens for financial gain, to transport illegal aliens and to conduct financial transactions with proceeds of specified unlawful activity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County.The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials.The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. Health officials didn't confirm the first flu death in each of the last two flu seasons until October.RELATED: San Diego County records second case of measles this year"Influenza deaths can occur at any time since influenza circulates throughout the year," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's interim deputy public health officer. At this time in the last two flu seasons, officials had confirmed just 26 cases in 2018 and 114 in 2017. A Democrat, Ward has served since 2016. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A transient who allegedly overpowered a woman in the East Village, dragged her into some bushes and sexually assaulted her before running away pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three felony charges, including assault with intent to commit rape.Gary Ryan Cushinberry, 51, who is on felony probation for robbery and failing to appear in court, was ordered held without bail.Late on the evening of Nov. 5, Cushinberry allegedly grabbed a 26-year-old pedestrian walking by herself in the 400 block of 13th Street, pulled her off the sidewalk and assaulted her before fleeing.Detectives identified Cushinberry -- a recent transplant from Indiana who has been living on the streets of San Diego -- as the alleged perpetrator by means of ``several tips and leads,'' Lt.
