BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – Millions of teachers are headed back to the classroom. But for many of them, it’s all remote. That means trying to teach through a screen. One teacher needed a way for his students to see what he was writing while still allowing them to see him teach. So, he came up with an innovative solution with a couple of pieces of wood and some imagination.With a miter saw, drill press and belt sander at the ready, Bob Pinta converted his home’s garage into a bustling workshop.The high school math and computer science teacher is solving an online teaching problem one contraption at a time.“I would be teaching, I could use my pen and share the screen, but no matter how good of a stylus you get, writing on the iPad is not the same as write it on paper,” said Pinta.Pinta found that his students could either see what he was writing or him, but not both. So, he designed a phone stand that could act as a virtual overhead projector.“I would join the zoom on my phone pointing the phone down at the table and I would have the students pin my hand so that it was the big one,” he explained.He says the height adjustable stand allows for a much more interactive lesson.“So, they would be able to follow along as I went, and they could see both my face and the paper as I zoom.”His wife posted a video to see if other teachers might be interested in one. It quickly racked up tens of thousands of views with orders pouring in from all over.“We have shipped across the United States.”Each weekend, they sit in the driveway for teachers wishing to pick one up in person. At plus shipping, Pinta says he wanted to keep the contraption, which doesn’t have an official name, affordable.“We wanted it cheap enough. A teacher could go ‘oh I'm going to try it’ and even if it doesn't work, they're out .”With more than 200 completed and another 160 in production, Pinta has proven if necessity is the mother of invention, then ingenuity is likely the father. 1979

Brad Bufanda, an actor best known for his roles in TV shows including "Veronica Mars" and "Co-Ed Confidential," has died after apparently taking his own life.Bufanda apparently jumped from a building in Los Angeles on Wednesday and died of "traumatic injuries," according to Variety.On Friday, TMZ reported that the 34-year-old actor left a suicide note that thanked some of the people in his life and mentioned his parents.Bufanda's manager told Variety she was "completely devastated for he was an extremely talented young actor and wonderful, caring human being." She said he'd been "reviving his career" and had just finished shooting two movies.He appeared in 23 movies and TV shows since 1995, according to IMDB. BOSTON (AP) — Authorities in a city north of Boston have captured an emu after the large flightless bird was spotted roaming local streets. The Eagle-Tribune reports that the animal named Kermit escaped from the property of a Haverhill resident as she was preparing to relocate it to a farm in Maine. Native to Australia, Emus are the world's largest bird after the ostrich and can reach nearly 100 pounds and a height of almost six feet. Authorities in Haverhill caught the bird two hours after it was sighted. They say an animal control officer enticed the emu by feeding it a pear from a nearby pear tree. 616

BEAVER DAM, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin apartment building where a fatal explosion took place was deliberately burned by firefighters Thursday.Authorities set fire to the building in Beaver Dam to burn chemicals that could not be removed because of their volatility. Those who lived in the building had not been allowed to return to retrieve any belongings or keepsakes because of the danger of another explosion.About 20 area fire departments with at least 100 firefighters assisted with the controlled burn.28-year-old Benjamin Morrow, who lived in one of the units, was killed in last week's explosion. Police believe he was making bombs when chemicals accidentally detonated. A funeral service for Morrow will be held Thursday in Madison. 751
