EAST VILLAGE (KGTV) -- A woman was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in the East Village Saturday night.San Diego police received numerous calls to an apartment complex on Market Street and Park Boulevard around 10 p.m. about a woman throwing objects out of a window. Officers arrived and found broken glass and furniture on the sidewalk below an apartment.Officials say the woman refused to listen to police and brandished a knife while out the window, continuing to throw objects. The woman refused to come out of the building, prompting police to force their way into the apartment. The woman locked herself in the bathroom, police say. Police used verbal directions, chemical agents, and a police canine to attempt to get the woman into custody, but the woman continued to refuse.The woman grabbed and punched the police canine. When officers made their way into the bathroom, police say she threatened them with a knife. “One officer fearing that he was going to be struck or stabbed with a knife, fired at least one round striking the female,” said Capt. Rich Freedman of the San Diego Police Department.The woman was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening gunshot injuries. The officers were not injured, although some people were hit by objects being thrown out of the window. The woman has not been identified, but she is a 26-year-old resident of San Diego, according to SDPD.The name of the officer involved in the shooting was not released, be he has been with the department for more than 11 years, police said. 1572

During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many couples turned to Zoom and other virtual video platforms so they could still get married in front of loved ones. But as the pandemic continues, a lot of couples are now back to holding weddings in-person. With a little bit of distance between guests."I definitely think it’s going to be a thought on everybody’s mind whether: do you keep smaller numbers or do you have the large numbers you originally wanted and you just space the chairs? Do you have to have more tables and more people per table?" said Braden Sutton, a wedding planner, day-of coordinator and ordained minister with JBS Weddings and Events in Georgia. He, like other wedding planners across the country, saw soon-to-be wed couples panic when the pandemic first erupted in the spring."Of course they want the big wedding they planned but they don't know what to do because they don't want to cut people off of the list and they don't want to hurt anybody’s feelings," said Sutton.Six months into the pandemic, Sutton says more couples are turning to socially-distanced weddings, making accommodations at their venues and sometimes shortening their guest lists to still have an in-person celebration as safely as possible. "Because we’ve all seen a few things on social media about large numbers of COVID cases happening at weddings and other gatherings, nobody wants that to be their wedding. Definitely it's possible, just play it smart," said Sutton.Courtney Saxon and Kayla Zachery began planning their Georgia wedding nearly a year ago. "And honestly, in the beginning I think we both were like, 'Oh, everything will be fine by November we’re not going to have to worry about it,'" said Saxon. They soon realized, if they wanted to keep their wedding date, they'd need to make a few adjustments. Chairs at the ceremony will be spaced and fewer people will be seated at each table."Ideally what will happen is everyone will sit as a family unit. So if you live together, of course you're already around one another. We're just trying to keep everyone essentially around people they came with," said Saxon.They'll also have hand sanitizing stations at food tables and all entrances, plus a video live stream of the event for those guests who can't attend in person. While the wedding won't look exactly how they envisioned, the two have a positive outlook for their special day. "To me, the most important thing is that at the end of the day I get to marry my best friend. That's really all I care about. It doesn't matter if everything goes exactly as I hoped or we planned because no matter if you get married in a pandemic or not, things are bound and determined to go wrong," said Saxon."What do they have to do to make sure they're safe, guests are safe and another part is just the venue what they require," said Sutton. Earlier this year, my daughter Pudu attended the second Women's March in Los Angeles. She later sent me an email saying that she felt excited to be part of the march.The protesters' signs used humor and anger to counter the policies of the US administration. She looked out over a sea of people wearing pink "pussyhats" as they listened to speeches about the harm being done by current political and social systems.But she left the Women's March with a big question: what is this for?She wondered what our traffic jams, road closures and rousing speeches achieved since, once we put the signs away, we still live in a sexist, patriarchal world. A world where undocumented children risk deportation, where the poorest members of society are denied basic rights and where the color of your skin can make you a target for violence.Knowing my history of bringing women together to create change, she asked me if we march only to hear ourselves chant -- because she sees little evidence of the protests creating change.I believe it takes a village to raise children, so I asked my good friend and American feminist Abigail Disney to share her reflections with my daughter.Even in the face of Donald Trump's election, Abby has faith in the American people's ability to change society for the better. She shared how the election prompted many people to try to understand what their personal responsibilities are.Abby encouraged my daughter not to be disheartened if the world looks bleak. My mother and grandmother taught me to be independent and I owe my feminist education to them, because they told us that we could do whatever a boy could do.Today, my generation is boldly organizing marches, wearing pussyhats and writing outrageous slogans on their placards. We place value on girls' education and have tried to raise our daughters in a way that celebrates their strength, courage and wisdom. We do not see girls to be a curse; rather we see them as a blessing.My life's work as a peace builder and an organizer has been to bring women together. I believe that huge change is possible when women put aside their differences, identify possible solutions for their shared problems and have the necessary resources.Our current global reality is not ideal. However, when I look to my daughter's generation, I am filled with optimism. Without a doubt, I believe that the next generation of young women will use their power to institute the changes that are currently being dreamed of. Small steps create big changes.For example, I know a young Liberian girl named Hannah, who was the only girl in her class in a tiny village. Hannah dreams of being a doctor. When Hannah's school shut down, her family and her community rallied around her to find options for her. My foundation connected with Hannah, and our scholarship program is supporting her to attend high school -- moving her one more step toward her dream of becoming a doctor.In my mother's generation, it was normal to hope for a son. In Hannah's generation, the entire community wants Hannah to fulfill her dreams. Twenty years ago, no one talked publicly about female genital mutilation (FGM). But today in Liberia, FGM has been banned for one year through an executive order, and there is a movement to eliminate the practice. (KGTV) -- New details emerged Monday in a warrant released after a man is accused of poisoning his wife.A search warrant revealed that the woman had been sick for months and had no idea what was going on with her.According to the warrant, the young mother began to feel sick in September, then started feeling better before her condition worsened in January.She suffered hair loss, no longer had the strength to walk or open a door and had to be helped around by family members and her extremities even became like dead weights, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wife with Thallium The warrant goes on to say that she suffered major loss of use of her extremities and was near death.Doctors determined that she received thallium poisoning by oral ingestion. Thallium is a chemical element used in rat poison and ant killers.Investigators determined that the poisoning could have only been done by someone with personal access to the food and drinks she consumed.According to the warrant, her husband Race Remington Uto, 27, had the most access to commit the crimes.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.The warrant shows the victim thought she may have been exposed to the poison while working in an old school building. 1661
