SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego City Council committee signed off Thursday on the proposed sale of a vacant city-owned property on Cortez Hill to a nonprofit agency for less than ,000 to create more than 100 units of affordable housing.The .4-acre property at 1449 Ninth Ave. was most recently the site of the now-vacant Cortez Hill Family Center, which housed homeless families.The City Council's Land Use and Housing Committee unanimously approved the proposal to sell the property for ,593 to Community Housing Works, which develops, rehabilitates, preserves and operates affordable apartment communities in San Diego and throughout the state.The sale will now move to the full City Council for consideration.According to a staff report, the low price is justified because "the property sale furthers the public purpose of providing low-income rental housing for 55 years, the number of affordable housing units will be increased, and the city will be relieved of administrative costs and liabilities associated with managing and maintaining the property."Councilman Chris Ward, the committee's chairman, said the building has served an important role, and he's grateful to Community Housing Works for proposing to create a net affordable housing gain."We are eager to get started and to keep working," said Mary Jane Jagodzinski, Community Housing Works' vice president of housing and real estate development.The proposal calls for Community Housing Works to demolish the existing three-story structure and its 48 units and build anywhere between 75 and 110 units, at least 44 of which would be for people or families making 30% or less of the Area Median Income. The property would also have up to three manager units.The city acquired the property -- formerly a Days Inn hotel -- in 2001 for transitional housing for homeless families. The rest of the people at the city's transitional homeless shelters -- such as Cortez Hill -- were shuffled to central locations to allow for easier tracking of the virus and to prevent spread of the illness.Alpha Project vacated the building on May 8 and the city officially declared the property "surplus" on May 19.The city's sale is contingent on the development of affordable housing on the property. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North County organization was awarded 0,000 in grant funding from the Department of Justice today to provide up to two years of transitional housing assistance for human trafficking victims.North County Lifeline Inc. is one of 73 grant awardees to receive funding Tuesday aimed at providing six to 24 months of transitional or short- term housing assistance for trafficking victims, including rental, utilities or related expenses, such as security deposits and relocation costs.The funding will also go toward assisting victims in finding permanent housing, employment, occupational training and counseling.The Office for Victims of Crime, a component of the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, awarded ,104,338 overall to organizations across 34 states, in what the department said was the largest federal investment of its kind.North County Lifeline Inc. is a community-based human services organization serving low-income and underserved populations in San Diego County, according to the organization's website.The organization's housing program utilizes a housing-first model that does not require tenants to meet criteria that often precludes trafficking victims from attaining housing, according to a statement from the U.S.Attorney's Office, which said substance abuse issues, mental health issues and prior criminal records often keep trafficking victims from qualifying for long- term housing.The office said the organization is looking to serve around 75 trafficking victims over the project period.Clients will also be offered supportive services such as ongoing case management, medical and dental care, (limited) legal assistance, literacy/GED/education assistance, LGBTQ services, substance abuse treatment, trauma counseling, life skills training, and employment and financial coaching.``Eradicating the horrific crime of human trafficking and helping its victims are top priorities for the Department of Justice,'' U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. ``We are working relentlessly to bring human traffickers to justice and to deliver critical aid to trafficking survivors, who often have nowhere to go once they are freed from trafficking. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames.
