Kroger is requesting customers no longer openly carry firearms into its stores, even in states where open carry is legal, the company announced Tuesday evening.The announcement comes just hours after Walmart made a similar announcement. Walmart also said it would end the sales of some firearms and ammunition. Kroger stopped selling guns last year.Kroger, like Walmart, also said it would add its voice to the growing number of corporations calling on elected officials to pass gun reform laws, such as requiring stronger background checks."Kroger has demonstrated with our actions that we recognize the growing chorus of Americans who are no longer comfortable with the status quo and who are advocating for concrete and common sense gun reforms," the company said in a statement.As mass shootings have grown in frequency, death toll and prominence in recent years, many big companies have faced pressure to address their role in the crisis.After a shooter in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 people last year, Dick's Sporting Goods announced it would stop selling assault-style rifles. At the same time, Walmart raised the age for gun purchases from 18 to 21. Kroger followed suit, ending all sales of guns and ammunition in its 45 Fred Meyer stores in the Pacific Northwest last March, citing declining consumer demand for firearms. The grocer had earlier stopped selling guns to people under 21 and pulled sales of magazines featuring "assault rifles."Over the last month, Walmart in particular has faced pressure to stop selling guns after 22 people were shot and killed by a white supremacist inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.In its statement, Kroger said it would be "respectfully asking" that customers no longer openly carry guns in its stores, except for authorized law enforcement officers. It’s a moment Donna Hopper will always remember but wishes she could forget.“He was just beating on the window,” she said. Eight years ago, Hopper shot and killed a man who was breaking into her home.Today, bullet holes still remain, serving as constant reminders of that night.“I don’t know why I haven’t taken them down,” she said. “I just turned my head and kind of shot in the air.”Hopper still keeps the .38 special handgun that she bought after her husband died, loaded and next to her bed.“It’s scary kind of looking at it because I’ve forgotten where the safety is,” she said. “I mean, I would have to look at it, and I don’t want to touch it.” Hopper, however, says she’s ready to pull the trigger again if need be because she believes that’s what saved her life that night. “If I had not had the gun ... in fact, when the police were here that night I told them, ‘I’m so sorry, I should have just had a baseball bat and whacked him on the head,' " Hopper said. "And they told me, 'He would have killed you before you got the first strike out. ' ” Across the country and in her hometown of Redding, California, Hopper was hailed as a hero for protecting her home and herself.“A gun in the hand of the right person at the right time at the right moment can save lives,” said Redding Police Captain Jon Poletski. “But guns can also be dangerous if they’re put into the hands of the wrong person at the wrong time in the wrong situation.”Poletski worked Hopper’s case back in 2011.He believes Hopper protected herself with a gun that night but says having a gun doesn’t guarantee somebody’s safety. INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives and officials say the investigation into a missing 8-month-old is a homicide investigation.Amiah Robertson was reported missing on March 16 and police issued a statewide Silver Alert for her on Tuesday. The investigation is a homicide investigation, IMPD Chief Bryan Roach said.Investigators are asking for anyone who saw Robert Lyons, the boyfriend of Robertson's mother, and/or Amiah on March 9, or any day after, in the area of Rockville Road and South Mickley Avenue to contact investigators.
